While we love kittens here at Kitsap Humane Society, we know that kittens who are able to stay with their moms until they are weaned are happier and healthier than those who are separated early. When the time is right, we'll be here for them!
So, what’s a kind-hearted kitten lover to do if you find some kittens?

Thanks to all who joined us for a flower-sniffin', kitty pettin' good time!
Thank you so much to everyone that joined us at Silver City Brewery & Taproom for the launch of "Flower Sniffin', Kitty Pettin' Rose Petal Wit Beer," a limited-edition brew specially crafted to bring awareness and generate funds for pets in need at KHS! We couldn't be more thrilled to be a part of Silver City's Silver Linings Series. And thanks to all of you we raised nearly $1,600 at the launch party alone!

Adoption Events are Back!
August was a month full of adoption events and you all turned out! In August alone 435 pets were adopted across 4 events and our regular adoption hours. Wow!
"We had quite a successful month with adoptions!" said KHS Adoption Program Coordinator, Kaitlynn Riley, "One piece I really love about offsite adoption events is the exposure it provides to our adoption program, and it also brings the animals to adopters that may not necessarily have access to our shelter outside that particular event. The best part is that adoptions continue to be completed at the shelter while we are offsite, so it only increases the number of animals finding their forever homes!"
Congratulations to all the 400+ new families that adopted this August, including Biggie Smalls, pictured here! We couldn't be more appreciative of the support our community shows for pets in need!
In September, KHS will be hosting several adoption events, including:

Adorable Adoptable
Meet Butters!
|
Meet Butters! This big meatball is full of love and good boy-ness! Butters favorite things are his people, his toys, and his kiddie pool. This hunk will play fetch and entertain himself all day long with his toys, but he also loves to get his lovins from his people. His previous owner also told us that he was housebroken, and crate trained! If you are looking for a couch potato to be a homebody with, this big guy is your man!
Plus, now through Sunday, Butter's adoption fee is $100 off!

Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Sally Miller!
|
Sally joined the volunteer team at KHS in April of 2022 and has already contributed over 150 hours to help support many of our animals and operational programs! Always eager to help and learn more about the different elements of shelter operations, Sally has volunteered with our dog walking shifts, helped with laundry, special events, and is a very frequent visitor to the Cattery. Sally said it best when talking about the different areas they volunteer in, noting that they are “definitely a jack-of-all-trades” and we couldn’t agree more!
Sally has had their eyes on volunteering with KHS for a number of years, but between COVID-19 and learning to be comfortable behind the wheel, they took time to wait until feeling fully comfortable to take on volunteering independently. When asked about what inspired them to want to volunteer, Sally’s passion truly shined through. “I know it sounds pretty cliche, but I’ve always loved animals. I’m super happy to be part of the team and all the various opportunities at the shelter!”
Due to Sally’s diverse repertoire of volunteer duties, it does not come as a surprise to know that one of the things Sally enjoys most about volunteering at the shelter would be spending time with the animals, “I’ve also been enjoying being able to get to know everyone, contributing to the welfare of Kitsap County’s stray animals and obviously, getting to hang out with the animals at the shelter,” Sally said.
Sally is no stranger to KHS and the lifesaving work that is completed here, having adopted their Jack Russell/Pittie mix in 2016 that came in as a transfer. This lucky dog joined a wonderful family that includes another pittie mix and 3 stray cats, all of which were strays that Sally and their family brought in to care for.
However, even with 5 animals at home, Sally still has a lot of room in their heart to shower all of our shelter animals with. And sometimes this can even become a slight hindrance for all the work Sally tries to accomplish.

|
“One moment that stands out is just how insistent Blake (a shelter cat) was in wanting snuggles while I was trying to clean his kennel. He even knew how to open the portal door between the litter cubby and the main kennel! It was very silly and cute but doesn’t make life easier when trying to clean!”
While Sally is still relatively new to the shelter, they have already made a huge impression with other KHS volunteers and staff. When volunteering at PetsWALK, one staff member noted how Sally was everywhere offering any help they could to ensure the event ran smoothly. And to have contributed so many hours in just a few months shows how dedicated and passionate Sally is! With a positive demeanor, entertaining anecdotes, and a wonderful knowledge of all things nerdy, Sally always brightens the room they are in! Thank you for all that you do to help support KHS, Sally!

Staff Spotlight
Meet Kelcey Bates!
|
A member of our Veterinary Services team, please meet Kelcey! Kelcey, who first got her start at KHS in Customer Service and now saves lives as a vet assistant, has been working at KHS for almost two years!
Her favorite part? “Providing weeks of care for a critical care case like parvovirus or panleukopenia virus where the outcome is a healthy adoptable family member! Or watching a low-income family receive low-cost veterinary care for their pet that would have otherwise not been able to get medical attention. I’m so proud to be a part of the vet med team!”
Kelcey has a bit of KHS at home with her as she adopted her soul dog, Melly, from the shelter in February 2021! Melly and her sister Hula are “such sources of light and love” in Kelcey’s life!
As a member of our veterinary team, Kelcey is often on the front lines of our most difficult cases, working with at-risk animals. She wants the community to know that the “compassion fatigue felt after a trying day or week wears on my heart. It’s hard most days to leave “work” at work. Most days, I go home and love on my girls, but on the harder days, I lean into my coworkers who bear the weight of a heavy day.”
|
|
Kelcey’s manager shares, “Kelcey is a huge asset to our team. Her infectious laugh, can-do attitude, and willingness to do anything that is needed makes her an invaluable team members. She is a wonderful mentor to newer staff, and has developed a skill set that makes her an outstanding veterinary assistant! I am very proud of how far she has come in a short time, and look forward to working with her for a long time to come.”
We’re so glad to have you aboard, Kelcey!

Puppuccino Pal Partner
Finn Hill Starbucks
|
|
We are happy to introduce you to our September Puppuccino Pal Partner, Finn Hill Starbucks! Located on the corner of Finn Hill & Hwy 3 in Poulsbo, this Starbucks location aims to be more than just a quick stop on your way but to also be a community gathering place.
“Finn Hill Starbucks strives to always live up to Starbucks’ mission: “To inspire and nurture the human spirit—one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time,” said Finn Hill Starbucks Store Manager, Brandi Query. “Our goal is to help make our community a better place, whether that’s through making human connections or giving support to causes that we are passionate about (like KHS!).”
“Finn Hill Starbucks is home to some of the kindest, most caring, and most passionate people that I know (both baristas and customers). We strive to create an experience where customers feel like they can consistently receive a quality beverage (or food item) while also feeling at home in our store,” Query explained.
When asked why Finn Hill Starbucks chooses to partner with KHS, Query said, “Many of the baristas at Finn Hill Starbucks are extremely passionate about helping shelter animals. Many of us have shelter pets of our own and know how much of an impact helping to save one furry life can make. The staff at KHS does SO much for the animals in our community! We want to support in any way that we can (even if it only makes the smallest difference)!”
