Senior College Planning

Seniors and Parents,

College application season is wrapping up, but Financial Aid/Scholarship season is just beginning. Seniors are currently finishing their college applications and/or making career or training plans for next year.

Financial Aid/Scholarship Information

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is open. Your student can apply for financial aid for the colleges they are applying to by completing the FAFSA. Both the parent and the student must complete the FAFSA. Colleges have their own FAFSA deadlines.

Scholarships

The College Counseling Team has compiled a list of scholarships sent to us. You can find the complete list HERE. (The scholarship list is a live Google Doc and is updated often.) The document is organized by deadline. If a deadline is from last year, it is because the scholarship has not been updated since then. Deadlines are similar year to year, so you can still look through each one. The scholarship list is updated as we hear from each organization, so it is important to check often.

Scholarship websites are also listed, where you can create accounts to search for more scholarships. This list can also be found on our website HERE

Other places to look for scholarships:

  1. The website of the college you are attending
  2. Home district high school Guidance Office (or their website)
  3. Local library
  4. Your parent’s workplace
  5. Your church/youth group

Local organizations that offer several scholarships include: Akron Community Foundation Scholarship Opportunities or College Now Greater Cleveland Organization.

General Websites:

Create an account with your preferences to have scholarship applications sent to you.

Most Scholarship applications require the following:

  1. Essay – Develop a well-written scholarship essay and reuse it for all of your applications.
  2. Transcript – Request from Mrs. Fridline in the College Counseling Office.
  3. Letters of Recommendation – Request from the same teacher who wrote your letter of recommendation for your college applications. They can easily tweak their letter to fit a scholarship application.
