Read and Discuss with Others!
Sometimes we feel isolated, but we fix that by joining groups and being a part of something bigger than us. While it's a little more difficult to do that in the current climate, the internet allows us to do it, just not face-to-face. A popular set of groups that you can join for connections and discussions are book clubs! Discuss the books that are recognized as powerful pieces by an actress, on the mind of a former NFL quarterback and recommended by the New York Times and PBS NewsHour. Once you've read them, discuss with others on their discussion platforms, or join Goodreads.com to discuss them with others! Be sure to scroll down on this email to find some of the book clubs and a way to rent books digitally through the William Jeanes library!
While many people in Hollywood have pet projects that can be lacking in substance, Reese Witherspoon's book club has a strong identity. Every month, Reese chooses a book featuring a woman at the center of the story and many of these books make it onto the New York Times Best Sellers List. Find her recommendations at the link above and then discuss at their Instagram, Facebook, or Goodreads group!
Many NFL players exit the game with injuries and suffer from it. Former Colts QB Andrew Luck, retired young to avoid any lasting damage from injuries, saving his Stanford educated mind for new pursuits. He created his book club at the request of friends and family as he was constantly asked what he was reading. He chooses two books a month, one for young readers (rookies) and one for experienced readers (veterans) and discusses them on his podcast. You can also see everyone's thoughts on the books from their social media posts on the website linked above.
Another group and a reputable one for sure. a combination of PBS and the New York Times is bound to find interesting and discussion-worthy books. Centered around a Facebook group, this club is easy to join and participate in! The group promotes conversations about the book and even gives an avenue to ask the author questions about their works.
