Fort Washington State Park
Local history is something that we should learn and cherish as it gives us important insight into our past. We're going to continue this series with a look into a local outdoor area - Fort Washington State Park!

Historical Events -

  • 1777 - After retreating from a loss at the Battle of Germantown, the Continental Army retreated to Montgomery County and then marched to Fort Washington and established fortifications there. The defensible area stretched from Fort Hill to Militia Hill and were manned by the Pennsylvania Militia. This group, with the assistance of a warning by Quaker woman Lydia Darragh, fended off a supposed surprise attack from the British at the Battle of Edge Hill. The troops remained at this location until December 11th, when Washington marched his troops to relocate to Valley Forge for the winter.
  • 1801 - The still standing Clifton House (formerly Sandy Tavern) is constructed to be a stomping ground of local travelers. Today it is functioning as a library and museum, while being operated by the Fort Washington Historical Society.
  • 1920s - Philadelphia's Fairmount Park Commission began acquiring the land where Fort Washington State Park now lies. The Fairmount Park Commission and the Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters worked together to maintain the land until...
  • 1953 - This year an act of state legislature handed the park over to what had been known as the Department of Forests and Waters, but is now better known as the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).
  • 2021 - Fort Washington State Park operates to this day, offering a beautiful 493 acres to recreate, no matter the activity you enjoy! Whether you want to hike, see wildlife, visit the historical areas or just take a stroll, the wonderfully maintained state park is there for you.
