The Clifton House
Local history is something that we should learn and cherish as it gives us important insight into our past. We're going to continue this series with a look into a local outdoor area - Fort Washington State Park!
The Clifton House
Historical Events -

  • 1801 - Prior to this year, the Sandy Tavern was located at the premises, but unfortunately, a devastating fire destroyed the tavern and inn. The Clifton House was built and started functioning.
  • 1855 - Rail service from Philadelphia to the Fort Washington area is established, making the site an attractive location to visit and stay at.
  • 1858 - The Clifton House was constructed in a Federal style, which you can still see the same features to this day.
  • 1873 - While the site can be tracked back to the Revolutionary War, the Clifton House name can only be traced back to this year, when William H. Witte was the owner.
  • Early 1900's - The creation of the automobile allowed the Philadelphians who used to visit the Clifton House to travel further and the location was sold to the state. Unfortunately, plans to continue Fairmount Park through the property didn't come to fruition and there was no use for the structure.
  • 1937 - The newly formed Historical Society of Fort Washington worked with Governor Gifford Pinchot to acquire the property and the building. The building was stabilized with the help of the Works Progress Administration and the interior was created by the historical society. One of the interesting portions of the interior decor in the current Clifton House is a replica of the one-room Union School (learn more about the Union School here).
  • 2021 - To this day, the Clifton House still operates as the home of the Historical Society of Fort Washington. With a museum and library inside, there's much to see when it is open. Unfortunately due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the building is closed to the public
