Greetings, Parents and Guardians,

Parents, I am delighted to inform you that Sennett is geared up and planning for a successful and academically enriching school year. Can you believe it is already the second month of school? The start of the school year has been amazing. I want to take a moment to give you some updates and reflections on our first month working with your child(ren) thus far.

First and foremost, I want to thank you for entrusting Sennett #1 with your child(ren)'s education and well-being. It is both an extreme honor and privilege to educate your child(ren). Our main objective is to be a pillar in the community. At Sennett #1, we provide a safe conducive learning environment with a targeted instructional design. We provide intuitive learning opportunities to stimulate students’ creativity so they can reach their full academic potential.

Our teachers have been working diligently to deliver rigorous instruction relevant to students’ academic levels and progression. Students have taken assessments, participated in classes, and completed various activities to determine their level of literacy and numeracy. This student data assist teachers in tailoring lessons to meet their individual learning needs. If you have any concerns or questions about your child's progress, please do not hesitate to reach out to Sennett #1.

Educationally yours,

Dr. Jeffrey B Copeland

Principal, Sennett Middle School

Sennett PTO information

  • The first PTO meeting of the year will take place on Wednesday, October 4th, 7–8 pm in the LMC. Join us to hear from school administrators about how the school year is going and what's new this year. Ask questions of school staff and families, and learn more about how the PTO supports our students, families and staff. All are welcome! Spanish translation will be provided. (Can't attend in person? Join us from home! Zoom link will be sent out via email)

  • SAVE THE DATE! Craft Fair - Saturday, November 18th, 9am-3pm. We are once again holding a craft fair at Sennett, except this year the event has moved to the fall! Help us by spreading the word in any groups you belong to (neighborhoods, clubs, church groups, etc), or anyone you know who loves crafts! There is a Facebook event that anyone can share, or just tell them the date! There will be over 50 booths with all different types of crafters from the area. The PTO will also be staffing a concession stand at the craft fair, so we will be looking for volunteers to help with that once the date gets closer.

  • Join the PTO Board. We're always looking for parents or family members to join our board. The board meets monthly, about a week before the full PTO meeting, and we'd love to have your voice at the table. If interested, contact us using the information below.

Advanced Learning Updates

Dear Families,

We hope your school year is off to a great start and we appreciate collaborating with you and your students in advanced learning development and opportunities. The Madison Metropolitan School District’s Advanced Learning (AL) Department recognizes the necessity of supporting and developing strengths and talents in our students. In this regard, the AL Department wants to ensure you are aware of the identification process of AL students and the assurance that once a student is identified, they continue to have student needs met as needed in our K-8 setting. We are equally focused on our equity goals and truly hope to continue to focus on talent development and potential in all learners.

Advanced Learning includes the domains of specific academics which includes Literacy, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science, and also Leadership, Creativity and the Visual and Performing Arts. Advanced Learning provides learning opportunities that broaden, deepen, and stretch beyond grade level expectations when students are ready for additional challenges through push in services, pull out services or support in the core content classroom.Students identified to receive these supports show high capabilities or the potential for high performance. In addition, due to the size of some schools and the split allocation of AL Specialists, some services may be offered across schools via Zoom or in non-traditional ways.

Services your student may receive:

Tier I-Differentiated Instruction in Core Setting (co-planning, co-teaching, and collaboration with AL staff and teachers)

  • Differentiation: tailoring classroom instruction to meet a student’s learning needs by adjusting what is learned and how it is learned (e.g. more challenging topics for similar tasks; more challenging tasks for same topic). This occurs when ALS collaborate and plan with core teachers in planning or push into classroom instruction to share.
  • Talent development: differentiation provided with support to nurture more intense motivation and higher achievement or activities like competitions or Center for Advanced Academics.

Tier II-Small Group Intervention- push into the classroom

Tier III- Subject or Whole Grade Acceleration- student is grade accelerated for instructional services

What is new in Advanced Learning?

  • The Advanced Learning strategic plan focuses on Equity, Talent Development, and monitoring Achievement goals.
  • Advanced Learning Specialists review school data regularly. This is the first step in identifying students who may benefit from Advanced Learning support. Your school’s Advanced Learning Specialist will reach out to gather more information about your student if school data sources indicate that Advanced Learning services and supports might be a good fit.
  • New Naglieri Non-Verbal Intelligence Assessments at grade 2
  • New Creativity focus through the P.E.T.S (Primary Education Thinking Skills) curriculum

Join the Advanced Learning Advisory Committee (ALAC)

Our committee is open to all parents/guardians and staff. We value your support and feedback on the current plan, as well as future Advanced Learning plan development and programming. Meetings will be held quarterly during the 2023-24 school year. Dates and locations will be posted on our website: https://www.madison.k12.wi.us/curriculum-instruction/advanced-learning. Applications for the AL Task Force will be shared in the Fall to assist in the development of the AL 3 year plan.

Want to learn more?

If I can be of any assistance, please email: syalexander@madison.k12.wi.us We hope to have systemic processes in place that make those contacts something you can expect and anticipate.

Your Advanced Learning Specialist should always be your initial contact for questions and concerns, but we hope this letter continues to share what you should be expecting and seeing for your student learner.

Have a fantastic school year!

Respectfully,

Dr. Sharon Y. Alexander

Advanced Learning Director

Madison Metropolitan School District

Student Pick up and Drop Off Reminder

Sennett Star Families!

As we continue to welcome you and your scholars back for another great school year we want to acknowledge and thank you for your understanding and support as we continue to navigate our current after school bussing needs.

With many more parents picking students up this year at the end of the day (thank you!) we want to clarify the current bus traffic pattern. As you pull in to the Sennett parking lot off Pflaum Rd we have currently coned off the loop in front of the gym for the safety of our students. We ask that you pull past the coned area and drive around to the back of the school, loop around the stalls at the back of the building and stop along the side of the soccer field, facing south, to connect with your scholar.

We will continue to direct scholars to wait for parent pick up in the soccer field only.

Thank you!

School Lunch: Accessing Meal Balances on School Cafe

Dear Sennett Families,

As we settle into a new school year, we want to remind you of resources to access and maintain your student’s meal balances. MMSD utilizes School Café to connect families with all Foods and Nutrition related information, including access to school menus, payment options and the free and reduced lunch application.

In addition to paying previous meal balances, School Cafe also allows families to proactively deposit funds into your student’s account. As a reminder, costs are published on the Foods and Nutrition website annually:

  • Breakfast: $1.60 in elementary schools, $1.85 in middle and high schools.
  • Lunch: $2.95 in elementary schools, $3.35 in middle schools, and $4.15 high schools
  • Reduced price is $0.40 for lunch in all grade levels. Your child may qualify for free or reduced-price meals if your household income falls within the limits on the Federal Income Chart.

Once you have created or logged into your School Cafe account, click “make a payment” to pay fees or deposit funds via credit card or bank account information. Alternatively, you can send a check or cash ($50 limit) with your student to school, where they can add funds to their account with the food service staff. Students can take the check or cash to the point-of-sale station in the cafeteria and it can be deposited on their account when they purchase a meal or they can just take cash or check to the point-of-sale station to deposit the funds.

Please note, we serve meals to students at school regardless of their balance, in order to support equitable access to full, nutritious meals for all scholars. A la carte purchases, including milk, are only allowable with a positive fund balance or cash.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or MMSD Foods and Nutrition staff at studentfees@madison.k12.wi.us.

Thank you,
