La Follette Area - 56th Annual - Madison String Festival

Three months of work and growth will culminate with a one-hour concert on
Saturday, March 18th at 2:00pm in the La Follette High School Gymnasium (702 Pflaum Road).
Rehearsal is Friday, March 17th.

Rehearsal: Friday, March 17 – La Follette High School Gymnasium
4:30 p.m Report for tuning
5:00 p.m. Rehearsal (we will play in order of levels and students may leave as soon as they have played the pieces they know)

Concert: Saturday, March 18, – La Follette High School Gymnasium
1:30 p.m. Report for tuning
2:00 p.m. Concert

This is a unique event where students of all levels and abilities, 5th grade-12th grade, can perform for and with each other. It is an excellent opportunity for young musicians to see and hear how they will be able to perform when they are older and more experienced. Older musicians will model what they have learned after years of study and collaborate with other students from across the district.

Hope to see you there!

Did you know?? Our AVID program is celebrating it’s 10 year anniversary here at Sennett Middle School! It has been an incredible journey and we wanted to share some program updates.

  • Field Trip to UWP: Sennett’s 7th and 8th graders enjoyed a fall field trip UWP: The University of Wisconsin at Platteville. UWP has been trying to diversify their campus and they really welcomed us, helped us see the campus and even fed us! Besides a college field trip, our AVID students have also been working on note-taking and study skills, and learning the AVID tutorial system. Mrs. Oriedo and Ms. Kent (8th) and Mrs. Hawker and Mr. Oriedo (7th) are very proud of the 7th and 8th grade AVID students who are working extra hard to embrace their futures! We try to go on two college field trips per year.

  • High school AVID application process: MANY 8th graders were invited to apply for high school AVID. We had so many qualified 8th graders–it will be very hard for the LaFollette staff to choose the best program candidates. Students will be notified in April of their status. Unfortunately, we already know that due to numbers, not all of our fantastic candidates will be accepted.

  • 2023-2024 Sennett AVID: In April, 6th graders who qualify will be invited to apply for the 7th grade AVID elective class. There will also be a handful of spots for 7th graders to join next year’s 8th grade class. Listen for announcements!

You can also check out the AVID program at avid.org !

Sennett’s ACP: Academic and Career Planning curriculum and activities keeps us busy most Mondays in our homeroom groups. Here is an update of activities we have worked on and our progress.

For further information, try: MMSD’s CCCR / ACP page.

ALL GRADES:

  1. Set-check-reflect on academic and personal goals 2x a quarter.
  2. Keep an on-going eportfolio of student work, each quarter for each class. Eportfolios are going to serve as student led conferences in the future, but were informally presented to a family member in February.
  3. Work through a set of lessons at each grade level.

The 6th graders have worked in our ACP-XELLO program on and off throughout the fall. A big fall focus was a “Transition To Middle School” paragraph that most kids completed.

The 7th graders did a 2 month-long career unit to prepare for an all grade FutureQuest trip, which was held at the Alliant Center. Students first used XELLO to do self assessments, and assessed their skills and interests. Our students represented Sennett well with great behavior, strong communication skills and a willingness to try the many hands-on activities. Thank you to all the 7th grade chaperones and staff who supported this trip (and even had a little fun themselves!)

The 8th graders have been working throughout all of December learning about high school four-year planning. We have tried to impress on our students that if they plan for high school, they can take classes they are passionate about and enjoy. Students mapped out classes and learned a lot about the 4 pre-college programs they may choose to apply for (AVID, PATHWAYS, ITA and PEOPLE.) We will also be doing a mini college unit and taking our annual Madison College campus tour on March 15th. We will end the year working on job skills and part-time job applications.
GSAFE Conference

10 Members of Sennett GSA attended the Middle School GSafe conference at Madison college. We engaged in collaborative learning around advocating for LGBTQIA+ students!
Young at Art

Young At Art is an exhibition of MMSD students’ artwork in partnership with Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA).

Each art teacher is allowed to submit a limited number of artworks from students at each school. For Sennett, I am allowed to submit only three works of art. It is with great pleasure that I share our three students this year are Aiden Block-Wichlacz, Mia Kuhn, and Aaliyah Xiong.

Artwork will be on display at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, 227 State Street, Madison, wi, 53703. The exhibition will open to the public on Saturday, March 18, 2023 with the Opening Reception on Sunday March 19, 2023 from 1-2:30pm. The show will remain open until Sunday, August 6, 2023. I encourage you to visit the exhibition and celebrate the works of MMSD art students.

MMSD Spring 2023 Vaccine Clinics

MMSD is hosting six vaccine clinics in collaboration with Public Health Madison Dane County (PHMDC) and SSM Health for students, families, and staff! Vaccines required by the WI Student Immunization Law, plus Covid and Flu vaccines will be available at all clinics. For more information and to schedule an appointment, click here.

Wisconsin Student Immunization law requires that all students entering the 7th grade receive a dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis) and meningococcal (MenACWY) vaccines. At the beginning of 7th grade, parents must provide Sennett Middle School with proof of immunization or claim a waiver. This vaccine is available from your child's primary care provider. Please consult with your child's provider before summer to avoid the late summer rush at clinics. If your child is uninsured, has BadgerCare or Medical Assistance, has “major medical insurance” (only covering hospitalization; no preventive care coverage), or is Native American or Alaska Native, vaccines can be received from the local public health department. For more information on Tdap, meningococcal, and other school required vaccines please see: https://www.madison.k12.wi.us/student-staff-support/health-services/immunization-information-and-school-requirements.

Please contact our school nurse, Evan Castillo RN, at (608-204-4034) with any questions.
Want to know more about your student when they're at school?

There is a way to get regular updates about your child!

Infinite Campus is the system that we use to communicate student grades, comments, and attendance. Parents can see each assignment grade and attendance - including tardies, find missing assignment reports and more. Teachers work hard to get assignments and grades updated weekly in Infinite Campus so that parents and students can see regular feedback on the work that students are doing in school. Quarter grades should never be a surprise; use Infinite Campus to check in regularly on your child's progress toward the content standards.

Download the Parent portal app!
You can even set notifications so you get regular information without having to remember to look!
Infinite Campus is also available on the computer. Here is the browser link.
