July 28, 2025

Dear DHS students and families,

I hope your summer break has been filled with joy and relaxation! As we eagerly approach the new school year, I'm filled with anticipation for the exciting adventures and achievements that await our students. We are thrilled to extend a warm welcome to all of you as we prepare to kick off the 25-26 school year at DHS on Wednesday, August 13.

Our first day of school is not just about academics; it's about fostering a sense of belonging and support within our school community. We are dedicated to ensuring that every student and staff member feels connected and empowered as we embark on this new journey together. Expect a day filled with engaging get-to-know-you activities in each class, along with fun games and treats during lunch. Our goal is for each student to leave campus feeling encouraged and energized for the year ahead.

To ensure a smooth transition into the new school year, I'd like to highlight three important points outlined in this welcome letter:

  1. Student class schedules: Student class schedules will be available via Infinite Campus on Thursday, July 31. To help students familiarize themselves with their schedule, we welcome students to walk their schedule from August 4-8 and August 11-12 as highlighted in the Class Schedules & Course Change Requests section.
  2. First day of school schedule: Our first day of school will be Wednesday August 13. All 9th grade students will attend Freshman Orientation from 8:20-12:15 p.m., which will include time for students to eat lunch. The cafeteria will open at 11:30 a.m. For all other students, the day will begin at 12:35 p.m. with 1st period. Each class will meet for 15 minutes, and students will have 5 minutes to get to their next classes. Thursday, August 14 and Friday, August 15 will follow a special Anchor Day schedule in which all 8 periods will take place. Please refer to the Bell Schedules and Cycle Days section below for further Details.
  3. Online fees & course materials: There are two locations to pay fees for school. Firstly, you can pay school fees via Infinite Campus. Secondly, course materials can be purchased at Beck’s Book Store (located on the DHS Campus).

Additionally, ID pictures will be taken during the first weeks back, scheduled during PE classes. In order to use their ID to scan into school, returning students may use last year’s physical ID or their online ID via Infinite Campus. Incoming freshmen will learn how to use this feature during Freshman Orientation on August 13. Further details regarding ID pictures and distribution will be provided after the first day of school.

We are excited to embark on this new journey with you and look forward to a successful and enriching school year ahead. Should you have any questions or require further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Warm regards,

Dr. Will Dwyer, Principal

CELL PHONES

As shared last spring, District 113 is implementing a new cell phone and technology policy starting this school year. Students may use phones before/after school, during passing periods, lunch, and study hall—but not during instructional time. Phones must be silenced/in airplane mode and stored in the designated classroom system during class.

All 9th and 10th-graders must use district-issued Chromebooks; personal laptops are not allowed. 11th and 12th grade students may still use personal devices this year, with a full Chromebook transition for all students in 2026–2027.

We appreciate your support as we work together to create more focused and engaging learning environments.

CLASS SCHEDULES & COURSE CHANGE REQUESTS

Class Schedules - Student class schedules for the 2025-26 school year will be available via Infinite Campus on Thursday, July 31. Some additional information regarding class schedules will be sent via email around Wednesday, July 30th.

  • Study Halls - Free periods in a student’s schedule will be designated as a study hall period. During study hall and off-lab periods, students are expected to go to a designated study hall location including the Bookstore Lobby, Library, Academic Resource Center (ARC), College and Career Resource Center (CCRC), or Makerspace. With parent/guardian permission, students may be excused from a study hall that falls at the beginning or end of the day. The Deans will send a Google form to parents/guardians prior to the first day of school to request an excuse from study hall during these designated times.
  • Walk your Schedule - Students are welcome to come to the building to walk their schedule between August 4-8 from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and August 11-13 from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Incoming freshmen will also have a special opportunity to walk their schedule during Freshman Orientation (see more details in the Additional Information for Freshmen section).

Course Request Change Form - This past spring, we provided students with additional opportunities to request a course change for their schedule. The Course Change Request Form closed on May 31, 2025. We are not accepting course change requests at this time. For students who wish to drop a class without adding a class, please complete this form.

Course Placement Changes - Beginning the 25-26 school year, students must meet specific criteria to be considered for a level change in a course. Please read in depth about the new course level change procedure here

ONLINE SCHOOL REGISTRATION FEES

Every parent/guardian must sign in to Infinite Campus to pay school fees prior to the first day of school. Fees will be available to pay upon the release of student schedules on July 31. A general outline of Online School Registration Fees is listed below. For a detailed list of fees and descriptions, please visit the Bursar’s webpage.

Financial Assistance − Families that may need financial assistance for school fees, textbooks, lunch, and other school resources should review and complete the Financial Aid Application. If you have questions, please contact Angie Suszek at asuszek@dist113.org.

Student Accident Claim Form and Student Accident Insurance Coverage - For access to the Student Accident Claim Form and Student Accident Insurance Coverage Flyer and Instructions, please navigate to the Financial Aid & Insurance webpage under Student Services or click here.

COURSE TEXTBOOKS, MATERIALS & SUPPLIES

Beck’s Bookstore is the provider of all District 113 course textbooks and materials (such as novels). This summer, students were able to purchase course textbooks and materials through the Beck’s Book Store DHS webpage. If you have any questions, please contact Beck’s Book Store via their online inquiry page

Course Supplies - Please be aware that the high school does not offer a grade-specific supply list. However, certain course teams have specified required supplies (notebooks, binders, etc.) that you may choose to purchase independently before the school year begins—click here for the course supply list. Rest assured, all teachers will review the necessary materials with their students at the start of the school year.

FOOD SERVICES

Quest is our food service vendor at Deerfield High School. Learn more about Quest by visiting our Food Services webpage

Purchasing Items - Students may purchase food in the cafeteria and coffee bar during the school year using their school ID as a debit card. Each student must have their own ID available to purchase food in the cafeteria. Students purchasing food through their account must have adequate funds. Please know that we do not allow students to carry a negative balance.

  • Set-Up/Add Funds - Money may be deposited into a student’s account at any time during the school year. Login to your Infinite Campus Portal and select “Food Service”
  • Account Notification - Parents/guardians can set up notifications to send an email when food service account balances drop below a specified threshold.
  • Year-End Balances - Balances at the end of the school year roll over to the next year unless a refund is requested. Graduating seniors will receive a refund in the form of a check mailed to their household. Checks will be mailed by the end of June. Families wishing to transfer balances to a sibling must request this prior to graduation.

Other Payment Methods - The student school ID is the preferred and quickest form of payment in the cafeteria and coffee bar. However, cash will also be accepted. Credit/debit cards and other payment methods are not accepted in the cafeteria and coffee bar. Please note that the vending machines accept cash, credit/debit, and Apple Pay.

Food Delivery Information - Please be aware that Deerfield High School will not accept food deliveries from services like Grubhub, DoorDash, Uber Eats, etc. We need to maintain an accessible and secure front entrance, and the traffic from these services compromises these efforts. However, we continue to allow families to drop off items (like lunches or forgotten school supplies) at the front security entrance.

BUS SERVICE & TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION

Bus Service - Students who reside 1.5 miles or more from school are eligible to take advantage of the free bus service. Service begins on Wednesday, August 13. Bus schedules and routes will be available via My Ride K-12. More details can be found on the District 113 Transportation webpage

Parking Lot/Traffic Flow Patterns - Student drop-off and pick-up before and after school will occur in the back (east) parking lot. Note: The Village of Deerfield does not allow pick-up and drop-off in neighboring North Trails.

Student Parking - There is limited student parking available. Incoming senior students applied and received verification of their parking status this past May. Any additional spots made available will be given to senior students on the waitlist. If additional spots are available, a lottery for semester parking will be held for juniors. Due to high demand, no spots will be available for sophomores or freshmen. For additional information, please contact Mr. Grubb, Security Manager at ggrubb@dist113.org or 224-632-3374. Additional parking information is posted on the Parking & Visiting DHS webpage.

HEALTH SERVICES

If your student has a known health condition such as asthma, diabetes, seizures, or food allergies, please provide Health Services with the applicable documentation as found on the DHS Health Services’ webpage, including:

  • Medication Authorization Form
  • Diabetes Medical Management Plan
  • Asthma Action Plan
  • Allergy Action Plan
  • Seizure Action Plan

Please provide the School Nurse with all necessary supplies to treat your student(s) effectively during the school day. DHS Health Services has a stock supply of acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin). However, only students who have the School Medication Authorization Form on file will be able to have these dispensed during the school day.

District 113 policy does not allow students to carry any medication, prescription or non-prescription, on campus during the school day; exceptions are epinephrine auto-injectors, asthma rescue inhalers, and diabetes medication.

Proof of immunization (freshmen and seniors) - By the first day of school, freshmen are required to show proof of physical examination, immunizations, and dental examination, while seniors are required to show proof of the second dose of the Meningococcal conjugate vaccine.

Please feel free to contact health services at 224-632-3200 if you have any questions. Additional contact information can be found on the DHS Health Services webpage.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Safety and security are of utmost importance in District 113. Our district and school administrators, security team, school resource officer, and local law enforcement work together to implement safety and security measures. State-required emergency drills will be conducted throughout the school year.

Addressing Safety & Security Concerns - To address safety and security concerns with the school, students are encouraged to talk to the Deans, SRO, teacher, counselor, or another trusted adult. Students may also access the following resources: District 113 tipline by phone or text at (847) 262-3363. (Please note that the District 113 tipline will not be monitored outside of school hours, on student non-attendance days, weekends, school breaks (including summer), or holidays.) Additional tiplines, monitored 24/7, can be found on the back of a student's ID including Safe2Help Illinois (text SAFE2) and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (call 988). In the case of an emergency, call 911.

Emergency Notification System - Our emergency notification system is integrated into Infinite Campus. Please review your contact information on Infinite Campus Portal to ensure that it is up-to-date. Instructions for updating your contact information can be found here.

DEANS AND ATTENDANCE

Some special highlights from the Handbook are listed below:

  • Student IDs - Students must scan their school ID to enter the building during the school day. Students may access their electronic school ID via Infinite Campus. **Please note that new physical IDs will not be issued until the beginning of September.

Parents/guardians are expected to report and provide a reason for absence to the high school attendance office within 24 hours of the absence.
  • Cell Phone Usage - Students are not permitted to use cell phones during their class period unless specifically authorized by the teacher. Students are expected to store their silenced cell phone in the designated cell phone pouches in the classroom.
  • Lockers - Freshmen students will obtain their assigned locker during Warrior Welcome on Wednesday, August 13. Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors will not automatically be assigned a locker, but rather may request one by contacting Dean Jimenez (jjimenez@dist113.org) or Dean Auston (eauston@dist113.org).
  • Student Behavior Expectations - Please carefully review the rules and policies related to student behavior expectations, discipline and consequences, which focus on safety, promote fairness, and provide support for struggling students.
