SENTINEL SAFETY SNIPPETS

November is National Slip/Trip/Fall Prevention Month

Same level and different level falls account for many incidents and injuries both in construction and general industry every year. In fact, they are commonly the #1 cause of non-fatal injuries and #2 cause of fatal injuries in general industry and the #1 cause of fatal injuries in Construction.

What can you do in your own workplace to raise awareness and make a difference?

  • Conduct a fall hazard assessment with your safety committee or maintenance teams to identify common hazards and remedies. Include your findings in weekly or monthly awareness updates.
  • Identify where employees or contractors must work at or above the required fall protection height of 4’ or more for general industry and 6’ or more for construction to ensure adequate anchor points and fall protection systems are in place.
  • Ensure your employees that must wear fall protection systems are properly trained in their use and inspection.
  • Do your employees or contractors need to work on your roof to clear snow, address clogged drains or maintain equipment?  If so, have you considered their fall potential as it pertains to OSHA’s rule on working on flat or low pitched roofs? For more details see:

    www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1910/1910.28
  • Look for opportunities to eliminate clutter corners, leaks, hoses/cords across walkways, and leaners to minimize housekeeping issues, equipment damage, and the associated slip-trip potential.
  • Do your employees use ladders? Are they using the right type of ladder? Are they using the ladder properly? Are the ladders free from damage?
  • The snow and ice season is already here or right around the corner for many states.   Do you have plans in place to keep outdoor walking surfaces clear and salted when inclement weather arrives?
  • Look for opportunities to minimize equipment leaks or water on the floor.
