21st annual Trial Run 5K is Sunday morning, Oct. 25

WAYNE - Run, walk and rally for Legal Aid of Southeastern PA at the 21st annual Trial Run 5K! Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to join us on Sunday morning, Oct. 25, when the race returns to Wilson Farm Park, 500 Lee Road, Wayne, PA 19087 (GPS may say Chesterbrook).
The Chester County Bar Association's Pro Bono Committee is hosting the event as part of Pro Bono Month.
Since the Trial Run's inception in 2005, it has raised more than $290,000 for civil legal aid, helping to increase essential legal services for neighbors who cannot afford an attorney.
Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., with the race stepping off at 9 a.m., rain or shine.
Registration is $20 before Oct. 25 and $25 on race day. It includes a t-shirt, while supplies last. Participants can run or walk, and Halloween costumes are welcome and encouraged.
A little friendly competition is part of the fun, too. Awards will go to the top men’s and women’s finishers and for best costume, and the Team Competition Trophy returns for 2026.
Proceeds support LASP’s work providing free civil legal help with housing, family law, domestic violence, consumer law and debt, record-clearing, veterans issues, elder law, public benefits and more.

LAFAYETTE HILL - The 2026 Legal Aid Golf Classic featured a fabulous day on the course at Green Valley Country Club on June 22. Huge thank you to the Montgomery Bar Foundation (MBF), Montgomery Bar Association (MBA), all sponsors, golfers & supporters.
Following a cocktail reception, the MBF presented awards. Virginia Frantz, President & Chief Executive Officer of the Montgomery County Foundation, Inc., received the Hon. Milton O. Moss Public Service Award. She was honored for her exceptional service in Montgomery County, including her leadership at the Montgomery County Foundation and her role as an honorary trustee of the Montgomery Bar Foundation.
In presenting the award, Patrick Kurtas, MBF President, said, "Her insight, judgment, and unwavering commitment have been indispensable. Simply put, the Montgomery Bar Foundation's charitable impact would not be what it is today without her dedication and guidance. Her leadership, generosity, and steadfast commitment to justice and community service have enriched Montgomery County in countless ways and embody the ideals for which this award was established."

| | August was National Make-a-Will Month | | |
Make-a-Will Month is an annual reminder of the importance of drafting or updating your will to ensure your final wishes are implemented as you intend.
Myth: Wills are only important if you have a lot of money or property.
Fact: This is false. Wills can do more than just name who gets your money and property. With a will, you can also nominate guardians for your minor children; name caretakers for your pets; leave instructions for digital assets such as cloud-stored photo, art and business assets, cryptocurrency, etc.; write your funeral wishes; and more. A will can also save your loved ones the time, money, and stress that come with lengthy, expensive probate court proceedings.
LASP assists low-income clients with simple wills, financial powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. In 2025-26, LASP staff and pro bono attorneys prepared 296 essential advanced planning documents for older adults and veterans.
Advanced planning helps families build generational wealth and provides peace of mind.

MORRISVILLE - Every Thursday, pro bono attorney Kate Roth helps Bucks County tenants understand their rights in eviction court in Morrisville. She reviews complaints and rental ledgers, and works toward solutions that may prevent eviction, reduce judgments, or give families more time to regain stability.
Kate has volunteered hundreds of hours through an eviction prevention community partnership in Magisterial District Court in Morrisville. LASP, the Bucks County Bar Association, and the Bucks County Opportunity Council connect tenants with legal help, social services and possible financial assistance on the day of their eviction hearing.
In an article in the summer 2026 issue of BCBA Writs Magazine, Kate noted that many renters arrive in court after a job loss, illness, car repair, childcare change or another unexpected setback. Most do not have an attorney.
Evictions have significant, long-term effects on renters, such as changes in schools for children and preventing families from being able to rent again. Evictions are also connected to job loss and negative mental health impacts.
More attorney volunteers are needed on Thursdays! Kate emphasized that one volunteer assisting with one case can make a significant difference.

HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network (PLAN) celebrated 13 law students who gained impactful, direct experience in legal aid programs across the state this summer as Martin Luther King, Jr. interns.
The MLK Reception, held July 23 at the Civic Club of Harrisburg, featured keynote speaker Sen. Art Haywood. In sharing several stories, Sen. Haywood addressed the dignity inherent in every person, and the role each person plays in upholding that dignity, whether as a legal professional or in everyday interactions.

CONSHOHOCKEN - Legal Aid of Southeastern PA summer interns celebrated their impactful, substantive work at a lunch on July 28 in Conshohocken. Shawn Boehringer, Executive Director, and Erika Becker, Pro Bono Director, expressed their thanks to interns in brief remarks after lunch. Many mentors from local offices also attended.
Shawn discussed the field of public interest law and encouraged interns to strongly consider it as a career path. Erika urged the interns to stay involved in legal aid through pro bono volunteering if their careers take a different direction.
"I wish you the very best," Shawn said. Reflecting on 33 years of service in legal aid programs, he noted, "Legal aid is a great place to be. I've had a wonderful career. ... There's a lot of variety in our work. You can move to different positions that give you that variety and broaden your experience, and we certainly have some of our staff who do that. ... It is possible to dedicate a career to this great work that we do at LASP and at other legal aid programs."
Altogether, 23 interns worked alongside LASP attorneys and staff this summer in all four counties.

| | MIE National Legal Aid Intern Summer Orientation | | |
LASP's summer interns had the opportunity to consider their role through a national lens during the Management Information Exchange (MIE)'s first-ever National Legal Aid Summer Intern Orientation, held virtually on June 2.
The afternoon event was designed to inform and inspire legal aid interns across the country, who have told MIE that service, justice, and community connection motivate them to work in legal aid. Topics included internship best practices, public interest fellowships, the history of legal aid, working with people experiencing poverty, and recognizing and managing compassion fatigue.

America 250 Acts of Service Challenge | pages 22-25
| | One-time $100 supplemental payments announced for 2025-26 LIHEAP recipients who meet eligibility requirements | | |
The PA Dept. of Human Services (DHS) will issue $100 supplemental payments for households that:
- Both received funds through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) during the 2025-26 season, and
- Include at least one family member who has a disability, is age 60 or older, or is a child under the age of six.
Payments can be used for an outstanding heating or current energy bill.
The money will be automatically issued to the utility vendor that received payment during the regular LIHEAP season.
LIHEAP is 100% federally funded. The $100 payment is possible because of remaining funds from the 2025-26 season, which closed May 8.

A faster, more convenient way to request Social Security card & number
If you need an original Social Security number (SSN) or a replacement card, you can now complete the request online, and if needed, schedule an appointment.
How it works
Visit the Social Security number and card webpage. You will be asked a few questions to determine the best way for you to apply.
After you submit your online application, it will either be processed online or you will be guided to schedule an appointment to visit a local Social Security office or card center and complete the process.
By starting the application online, the in-office visit will typically take less time.
Expanded appointment-based services are part of ongoing efforts to serve people more efficiently. To visit a local Social Security office or card center, please make an appointment.
Before your visit to complete your application:

Determine what documents to bring. They must be originals or certified copies. Learn more at www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ss5doc.htm.
- Follow directions at the kiosk when you arrive at the office. To use Mobile Check-in Express, scan the QR code posted near the entrance and turn on mobile notifications.
- Meet with a staff member who will verify the information you submitted online and review your documents. You keep the documents.
Whether you apply for a Social Security card online or at an office, the application will be processed and the application and card will be mailed to you, usually within 10 business days.

Pennie announced on July 24 that it has changed back to the original 2027 Open Enrollment dates of Nov. 1, 2026-Jan. 15, 2027. Pennie is Pennsylvania’s official health insurance marketplace for health and dental coverage.
What happened
Pennie had planned for a shortened Open Enrollment period due to recent federal regulation changes.
Those changes were invalidated in a recent lawsuit.
Now, Pennie is changing the Open Enrollment dates back to the prior regulatory requirements and the dates that have been used every year.
Open Enrollment 2027 starts Nov. 1, 2026, & ends Jan. 15, 2027.
- For coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2027: Dec. 15, 2026 deadline
- For coverage beginning Feb. 1, 2027: Jan. 15, 2027 deadline

NORRISTOWN - Cynthia E. Haskin joined LASP July 1 as Regional Helpline Supervising Attorney. She most recently served as Pro Bono and Training Coordinator at Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid in Minneapolis from 2024-26. In that role, she planned and oversaw pro bono training projects, recruited and assigned volunteers to cases and clinics based on their experience and interests; developed and maintained relationships with pro bono coordinators at firms and law school internship, externship and fellowship coordinators; organized and supervised clinics; and supervised members of the pro bono team.
She previously held multiple roles at Philadelphia Legal Assistance (PLA) from 1996-2012 and 2013-2024, including Co-Founder and Pro Bono Attorney Supervisor of the Medical Legal Community Partnership. She earned her J.D. from Temple University School of Law, receiving the Frances G. Schrull Scholarship and the Barrister Award for Excellence in Trial Advocacy. She holds a B.A. in international studies and political science from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee.
Earlier in her career, she was Supervising Attorney at the Guild Food Stamp Clinic from 1998-2003 and 2005-2012. She supervised the student-initiated clinic of advocates from the University of Pennsylvania Law School at PLA and trained student advocates in food stamp regulations, advocacy skills, interview skills, and ethical issues. She received the University of Pennsylvania Law School’s Pro Bono Supervisor of the Year Award. She served as Staff Attorney for Community Legal Services of Philadelphia (CLS) from 1992-96, where she represented parents in abuse and neglect cases, staffed courtrooms to provide representation or legal advice to any low-income parent who requested assistance, represented plaintiffs in Protection from Abuse (PFA) cases, and provided training to attorneys, law students, and client groups. She also served as Legal Intern and Student Attorney at CLS and Student Attorney for the Elderly Law Project during law school.
In addition to serving on hiring and strategic planning committees at PLA, she has volunteered over the years for a wide array of schools, faith-based and community organizations as well as the Pisgah Legal Services Java for Justice. Cynthia can be reached at 267-277-2957 or chaskin@lasp.org.

DOYLESTOWN - Karla Goebel joined LASP July 1 as Doylestown Paralegal. She is a recent Kutztown University of Pennsylvania graduate with a B.S. in English and a minor in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. She also earned a paralegal certificate from Lehigh Carbon Community College, with coursework in civil litigation, law office management and women’s studies. She was a paralegal intern in LASP's Doylestown Office in summer 2025. Karla assisted in filing paperwork and researching information on clients and cases.
In her work at the Kutztown University Library, she answered patron inquiries, directed calls, assisted customers and maintained library functions at the Circulation Desk. NORRISTOWN - Sara Hentschke joined LASP on July 20 as a Helpline Staff Attorney based in Norristown. She brings a passion for public service and a career dedicated to helping children and families navigate difficult situations.Before becoming an attorney, Sara spent several years working as a social worker serving vulnerable populations, including older adults, children, and women experiencing intimate partner violence. Those experiences inspired her to attend law school with the goal of pursuing a public service career focused on eliminating the barriers that poverty creates for individuals and families.
Before joining LASP, Sara was an Associate Attorney at Lamb McErlane, P.C. in West Chester, where she represented clients in a wide range of family law matters. Her work included developing legal strategies, negotiating settlements, representing clients in court, drafting prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, preparing property settlement agreements, conducting legal research, and helping improve client intake processes.
Prior to that, Sara spent four years as an Assistant Public Defender in the Child Advocacy Unit of the Montgomery County Office of the Public Defender. In that role, she represented the legal and best interests of children involved in abuse and neglect cases while working closely with social workers, investigators, and other professionals to advocate for her clients. Earlier in her career, she also served in the Child Advocacy Unit of the Defender Association of Philadelphia and practiced family law with firms in West Chester and Blue Bell.

NORRISTOWN - Maureen A. McCarthy joined LASP on June 1 as Grants & Compliance Specialist. She is based in the Administrative Office in Norristown. Maureen most recently served as Executive Director of Research, Assessment, Data Analytics and Reporting and Director of Learning Assessment at Bucks County Community College from 2019-2026. In those roles, she led institutional assessment and planning efforts, oversaw survey design and data analysis, served as Accreditation Liaison Officer for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, chaired the Institutional Review Board, and supervised the college’s data team. She also served on the President’s Cabinet and coordinated assessment of student learning and academic program review.
She taught public health and sociology as an adjunct faculty member at several institutions, including West Chester University, Cabrini University, Penn State Abington, Moravian College, and Gwynedd Mercy University, from 2016-19. She was Director of Research and Evaluation at AccessMatters, formerly Family Planning Council, from 2013-16, managing research and evaluation projects and writing grants and reports. From 1999-2013, she was a member of the Community Health faculty at the State University of New York at Potsdam. There, she was an associate professor, served as department chair, and taught courses in public health, epidemiology, substance abuse, sexual health, and program evaluation. She also held research and project management positions with the Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health, Children’s Hospital, and the Prevention Institute, focusing on mental health, adolescent health, and substance abuse prevention.
Maureen earned a Ph.D. in Public Health and an M.A. in Sociology from Ohio State University and a B.A. in Psychology and Women’s Studies from Oberlin College. Her volunteer service has included work with Family Promise of Montgomery County, Daily Bread Community Food Pantry, the LGBT Equality Alliance, Planned Parenthood of Northern New York, and Renewal House, a domestic violence service organization. NORRISTOWN - Seren Spence joined LASP July 20 as Disability Advocacy Project (DAP) Paralegal in the Community Engagement Unit. She is based in the Norristown Administrative Office.
Seren is a social worker with experience supporting children, youth, and families through child welfare, education, and community-based programs. She most recently served as a Caseworker II with Allegheny County Office of Children, Youth and Families, where she worked with families to support reunification and preservation efforts, testified in court regarding case progress, and helped foster youth maintain stability and well-being.
She also served as a DREAM/PWB facilitator at the University of Pittsburgh, where she developed and led group sessions for students in grades K-12. She interned through the Child Welfare Education for Baccalaureates (CWEB) program at the University of Pittsburgh, assisting caseworkers with assessments, reports, and case management. She also connected families with resources such as transportation, school enrollment, SNAP benefits, and mediation services.
Seren served in AmeriCorps at the Propel Hazelwood site in 2022-23. She also volunteered for Jumpstart Corps in Pittsburgh, facilitated inclusive programming for youth with Prince George's County Parks and Recreation in Maryland, and worked as a grant writing intern with Movement Exchange, identifying funding opportunities and preparing grant applications.

NORRISTOWN - Vanessa Starr joined LASP July 1 as Development Officer based in the Norristown Administrative Office. Over the last 23 years, she has supported nonprofit organizations in southeastern PA by advancing initiatives that make a meaningful difference for the individuals and communities they serve.
Most recently, Vanessa served as an independent contractor with CatapalloVR in Phoenixville, where she cultivated strategic partnerships, supported platform adoption, and represented the organization at industry events focused on virtual reality’s role in mental health and learning.
Previously, Vanessa served as Director of Development at Health Care Access in Phoenixville and as Development Director and a leadership team member at Connections Work in Reading. At the latter, she led marketing, development and community outreach functions; managed the organization’s rebrand; and developed a comprehensive marketing and development calendar. Earlier in her career, she was the Director of Volunteer Services at Reading Hospital and held development and marketing roles at the Children's Home of Reading, Jan Grieff Research Associates, Opportunity House, and Easterseals Eastern Pennsylvania.
Vanessa holds a B.A. in Communications from Bloomsburg University and has completed graduate coursework toward an MBA at Alvernia University. The Community Engagement Unit (CEU) launched a new monthly Record-Clearing Clinic in Chester City.
At the first clinic on June 3, LASP staff and interns helped eight people get started on the expungement or Clean Slate process.

Senior Appreciation Fair in Darby
DARBY - LASP's Community Engagement Unit attended Rep. Joanna McClinton's Senior Appreciation Fair on July 24. Staff and interns shared information about LASP's senior services, including Social Security, public benefits, record-clearing, veterans services, and more.
Held at Friendship Circle Senior Center in Darby, the fair celebrated and supported older adults by connecting them with healthcare providers, government agencies, and community organizations offering programs, services, and resources that promote healthy, independent living. Health screenings were available.

Expungement Clinic in Fairless Hills
FAIRLESS HILLS - State Rep. Jim Prokopiak hosted LASP for an Expungement Clinic on July 30. About 30 people attended the free clinic, held at the Falls Township Public Meeting Room in Fairless Hills.
Attendees received legal information about the expungement and record-sealing process in PA. Record-clearing helps people improve opportunities for better jobs, education and housing.

The program, “Courts, Boards, Benefits and Bail,” was held June 25 at the Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library.

Veterans Resource Fair in Sharon Hill
SHARON HILL - Justice Simanek (at left), Supervising Attorney of LASP's Veterans Advocacy Project, and Megan Reinprecht, VAP Staff Attorney, shared information about free legal services at the Veterans Resource Fair June 6.
The Delaware County Dept. of Military and Veterans Affairs hosted the event to connect veterans, service members and families with community resources, health and wellness services, and employment and education opportunities. It was held at the First African Baptist Church in Sharon Hill.
LASP provides free legal help with VA benefits, discharge upgrades, and multiple other civil matters in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties, plus 16 additional counties in Pennsylvania.
