Join the #NAIRHHANow Twitter Chat
|
Since 2014, National African Immigrant and Refugee HIV & Hepatitis Awareness (NAIRHHA) Day has been observed annually on Sept. 9 at the local and regional levels. This day is about bringing attention and resources to the pressing (and often silent) issues of HIV and viral hepatitis, and their disproportionate impact on African communities in the United States. For several years, there has been a concerted effort to designate NAIRHHA Day a federally recognized health observance.
To honor the day in 2022, the Coalition Against Hepatitis for People of African Origin (CHIPO), led by the Hepatitis B Foundation, and Africans for Improved Access at the Multicultural AIDS Coalition are partnering for a Twitter chat! The chat will discuss the importance of NAIRHHA Day, as well as the reasons why it should receive national designation.
We invite you to join us! Simply log into Twitter on Sept. 8 at 4:30 p.m. EDT and use the #NAIRHHANow to join the conversation. We hope to see you there!

Consult corner: September is Sexual Health Month
|
Welcome to Consult Corner, where we answer some of the most commonly asked questions!
This month's question: "I have been diagnosed with chronic hepatitis B, so can I get married?"
Yes, you can marry if you are living with hepatitis B. Please watch these short #justB videos to see how other people with hepatitis B manage relationships, children and families:
Although there is sometimes stigma associated with having hepatitis B and fear of transmission, it should not be that way. There is a safe and effective vaccine to prevent transmitting hepatitis B infection to loved ones. Be sure your future partner is vaccinated with the three-dose hepatitis B vaccine series given at zero, one and six months (there is a two-dose series available in the U.S. that is completed in one month). Practice safe sex using a condom until your partner completes the vaccine series.
Since marriage is a shared journey, so is the journey with hepatitis B. Assure your partner that you will take good care of your health, and that you will make sure to keep your regular visits to the doctor and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Also make sure to involve your partner in every step of the journey and seek their support when it comes to treatment options or keeping a healthy lifestyle.

It wasn’t until 10 years later, when Adama tested positive for hepatitis B and experienced the same symptoms, that he realized his mom had suffered from the same virus. Adama is now managing his hepatitis B and receiving treatment but is concerned about the low awareness of hepatitis B in his community.

New Blog: What is the difference between hepatitis B and
fatty liver disease?
|
Many people have trouble understanding the relationship between chronic hepatitis B (HBV) infection and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). While research studies are ongoing and the association between hepatitis B and NAFLD is indeed complex, a chronic hepatitis B infection does not cause NAFLD. It is important to understand both diseases independently of one another before studying the correlation between the two.

Attitudes towards clinical trial participation among people living with hepatitis B
|
|
The Hepatitis B Foundation conducted an online survey regarding the willingness to participate in clinical trials among people living with hepatitis B in the U.S. and beyond its borders. Statistical analyses were conducted to identify relationships between willingness to participate and demographic characteristics.
Overall among the respondents, the willingness to participate in clinical trials was high with 73% were willing, 21% undecided and only 6% unwilling to participate. Black or African American respondents showed the highest rate of willingness to participate in clinical trials (83%). The majority of White respondents (64%) and Asians (63%) also were willing to participate. The willingness to participate in clinical trials was higher among respondents living outside the U.S. (77%) and those who identified as male (77%). U.S. respondents were more likely to be undecided about their participation (34%) than international respondents.
There was a lower willingness to participate in clinical trials among those in the U.S. in contrast to those in other countries. This illustrates the need to increase the engagement with patients living with chronic hepatitis B in the U.S. and most especially with Black or African American and Asian U.S. populations.
