Men + Isolation + Guns =Death

I am not talking about mass shooters, though there is a correlation there too, I am talking about the soaring rate of suicide in the US.  Ground zero for the epidemic is white males living in the Western United States.  The states with the highest rates of suicide are Montana, Alaska, Wyoming a suicide rate that is double the national average.

Having lived and extensively  traveled through the Rocky Mountain region one thing you notice is the emptiness of the West.  As we would trek from Denver to Montana to fly fish we would be overwhelmed at how much nothing there is.  How small the towns are and how much room there is between them.  The wide open spaces have a hidden threat: isolation. There is this mythology and allure of the American West: the most rugged of rugged individualism.

But winters are long and guns are prevalent.  In Wyoming 73% of the houses have guns; the highest rate in the country.   This is not a good combination.  Add in almost  no Mental Health services and the massive stigma of ever talking about your doubts about how you are doing mentally completes the threat.  I went into a Mental Health Center in Montana 45 years ago with the thought of moving to that spectacular place and the Center Director said “…oh son you don’t want to practice here Cowboys don’t do therapy”. Apparently little has changed.

Read the amazing article  All American Despair  from  Rolling Stone  that gives you the feel not just the numbers around this on-going tragedy.
Link to full Rolling Stone Article  suicide-rate-america-white-men-841576

White men were 70% of all the 47,173 suicides in the US in 2017 according to the Centers of Disease Control.  And men aged 45-64 are the fastest growing age grouping of suicides. In Utah 85% of the gun related deaths are suicide.  But the deaths are hidden, one by one and therefore deemed not news worthy.  Please consider that  all  the unspeakable mass shooting deaths from 2006 to 2017 totaled 1400.  We currently have that amount of death by suicide by white males every 2 weeks!

In general we men suck at handling change.  And the older the worse we are.  I have written in the past about the changing economy and whom it is leaving behind.  Men who do physical work without much education are hit hard.  The West is a place where physical work, (think oil fields, ranch work and long haul truck drivers) still dominate the labor market. These jobs are both punishing and disappearing.  Combine that with the isolated, self contained existence, where men keep it all inside and the numbers are disturbing but understandable.

Perhaps what is more important is what these horrific numbers portent for the rest of the country and world.  Men in every part of the world can isolate themselves in on-line/social media bubbles not just wide open spaces.  This is one of the connections to mass shooters.  Long hours spent in hate oriented chat rooms isolated from real human contact.  All the women out there know that men left to internalize their emotions does not have a positive outcome.    Withdrawal is the default way of coping with painful emotions for men, especially older men.

There is a push in Congress to dismantle the Affordable Care Act by one party.  The Mental Health funding put in under Obama is tops in the hit list of things to be cut. This will only accelerate the loss of preventative resources.  Gun control, red flag laws seem gridlocked and only mentioned for the few days around a mass shooting event.

September is Suicide prevention month.  It is estimated that 120 people are affected from each suicide. Reach out to those who are isolated. Vote for laws that provide mental health and limit guns and decrease the likelihood of an impulsive momentary decisions damaging so many lives.

When you are concerned for yourself or others call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline 800-273-8255 available every day all day.

As always we invite your comments.
