September! International Literacy Month and Library Card Sign Up Month

Please note: Neither of these are SCBWI sponsored. (But can be worthy of writers' and illustrators' attention...

The International Literacy Association (ILA) invites you to join them on International Literacy Day (Sept. 8) and throughout September during Literacy Month 2025. Check out their resources that can help everyone celebrate the joy of reading, stand up for Children’s Rights to Read, and build momentum going into Banned Books Week (Oct. 5-11).

The International Literacy Association (ILA) has a wonderful set of activities to support the theme of Every Page Has a Purpose. Beginning with a BINGO card called Readers in the Wild. The second week Together We Read with the third putting kids at the center with My Book Voice. ILA states, "The month concludes with Public Places, Reading Spaces, spotlighting libraries as community hubs and vital champions of the right to read. Ending Literacy Month in the library is no accident—we wanted to connect September’s Library Card Sign-Up Month and prime October’s Banned Books Week, underscoring both the joy of access and the urgency of protecting it."

What do you say? Let's spread the word about #kidlit, reading, writing, and illustrating. Every child. Every book. Every right. Create a post for Instagram. Tag @scbwiwisconsin Post your thoughts about "Every Page Has a Purpose" on BlueSky. What can you post on FaceBook that elevates books, reading, writing, and illustrating? Do you have a SubStack account? Spread the word. Invite folks to join SCBWI.

Are you registered for The Artistry of Craft? Consider bringing one book and a craft tip to pass along. How about sharing a post card, bookmark, a sketch, or a sticker? Let's do this!

Writing Conferences: The Benefits of Attending

by Kathy Randall, NEWS FOR YOU Editor

Attending a conference is an investment of time, energy, and money. As a writer, carving time into a week to write can be a chore.

Why spend time at a conference?

You will:

  • Meet other authors. Writing can be a solitary experience. Conferences provide a sense of community and belonging.
  • Network with of professionals and establish friends in the writing field.
  • Be inspired by fellow authors and spark your own creativity.
  • Gain insight into the publishing industry which is constantly changing, especially with the rapid development of AI technology.

If you’ve never attended a conference, the SCBWI September 27 conference, The Artistry of Craft, is the place to begin. And if you’re a veteran conference attendee, you know you’ll leave with new ideas and a renewed energy about the joys of writing.

How did you spend your summer?

Did you do something this summer you would like to share? Perhaps you spoke at a conference? Held a library program? Attended an interesting workshop or took a writing class? Perhaps you took a research trip for a new project? Or maybe you unplugged for a bit and would like to share how the summer replenished your writing life.

Send your summer writing adventures to us. We will include them in the upcoming autumn newsletters.

Fall is a great time to look back on what we've accomplished during the warm summer months.

"Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes...

even you." Anne Lamont
