Outdoor Access for All!
Our mission is to conserve native species and habitats through
restoration, research and education. Our vision is a world where all people and wildlands are healthy and interact positively, biological diversity flourishes, and environmental challenges are met with a social commitment to solving problems with scientific principles.
And we need you to support conservation. To join us in our work,
"The environment, after all, is where we all meet, where we all have a mutual interest. It is one thing that all of us share. It is not only a mirror of ourselves, but a focusing lens on what we can become." Lady Bird Johnson

Douglas-fir are Encroaching on Unique Grasslands! Three Methods to Keep This from Happening
|
When I talk with friends about restoring grasslands and meadows, I frequently talk about cutting down trees. Naturally when we think of open meadows and grasslands, we think of the absence of trees, but have you ever thought about what it takes to keep grasslands open? Well, the short answer is this: it takes lots and lots of manual labor! Read More

Facilitating Cultural Connections and Environmental Literacy through Southwest Forest Bound Program
|
Forest Bound is a native plant immersion and conservation skill building program that examines native plant species through a botanical, ecological/environmental, and cultural lens. This summer, IAE’s Southwest Office in Santa Fe offered two Forest Bound sessions that continued collaborations with Pueblo of Pojoaque Tewa Language Department (2nd year of partnership) and with Youthworks of Santa Fe (4th year of partnership). Funding from the U.S. Forest Service Region 3 and the Walmart Foundation for 2021 and partner contributions enabled IAE SW to provide this program free of cost to participants. Read More

Working Through the Seasons
|
Although we implement habitat restoration projects year round at IAE, the fieldwork we do changes with the seasons, with some times of the year busier than others. We thought we would walk our readers through a “year in the life” of a restoration practitioner at IAE, so that you can get a sense of the rhythm of the seasons from our point of view! Read More

Staff Spotlight: Karen Hall
Karen Hall is the Program Director for Ecological Education (EE) at IAE. She manages all aspects of the program, including fundraising, EE staff development and mentoring, and oversight of program work, budgets and deliverables. In addition, she is responsible for writing and communication, organizational support and collaboration.
As a lifelong naturalist, she specializes in helping humans connect more deeply to the non-human aspects of nature. Karen earned her B.S. in Biology at Western Carolina University in North Carolina. Her master’s thesis (Botany) focused on in vitro growth and chemical extraction/analysis of goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), an important medicinal plant. She completed this degree and her Ph.D. (Plant Physiology) at Clemson University in South Carolina where she studied ethnobotany with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
Before coming to IAE, Karen taught college students, designed and led adult outreach programs in South Carolina, worked on urban ecological concerns in Texas and was an administrator with a raptor center in Oregon.
When she isn’t nature-scaping her postage-stamp sized yard, Karen is biking recumbently with her husband, providing lap space for Scrappy, surface designing via computer and dyeing early and often with plants/insects/lichens/mushrooms.

Pumice moonwort (Botrychium pumicola) is only found in very unique environments: pumice fields of central Oregon (and possibly California). Surveys are challenging because of its diminutive size and extreme environments. Therefore, to help identify populations of this rare fern and inform conservation efforts, IAE is working with the U.S. Forest Service to develop a species distribution model – basically a map that indicates where pumice grape-fern is likely to grow due to the right climatic and environmental conditions.

Sometimes prairie restoration calls for creative solutions! At Hagg Lake, where we are restoring prairie habitat for Fender’s blue butterfly and its host Kincaid’s lupine, we are using logs that were cut when creating butterfly corridors to prevent park visitors from driving on roadside prairie habitat that will be seeded with natives this fall. We hope that once the natives take hold this will be enough to deter visitors from driving on the prairie, but in the meantime, the logs should do the trick!

Looking for an easy way to support our restoration, research and education work? IAE is proud to partner with EarthShare, a federation of leading non-profit environmental charities, making it easy for Oregonians to share the responsibility for our environmental legacy. Many workplaces can deduct from your paycheck via Earthshare; ask your employer to set up a Workplace Giving account. If you have questions, please send us an email at info@appliedeco.org.
