Focus on Cybersecurity

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Every October, Massachusetts Cybersecurity Awareness Month is held concurrently with National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The theme for Massachusetts Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2022 is "Advance. Include. Secure." Explore the updates below to learn more about current cybersecurity issues specific to the healthcare sector. Also, stay tuned to MassTech's MassCyberCenter website for more information about Massachusetts Cybersecurity Awareness Month, cybersecurity best practices, and ways that everyone can work together to secure information and proactively defend ourselves against cyber threats.

Healthcare Cybersecurity Alerts

  • CISA and the FBI are warning the healthcare sector about Zeppelin Ransomware, which relies on RDP exploitation and phishing campaigns and poses a significant threat. The advisory urges all potential victims to employ numerous mitigations to defend their networks and reduce the risk of compromise. Recommended mitigation tactics include implementing a recovery plan, requiring multifactor authentication (MFA), and keeping all operating systems, software, and firmware up to dateRead more about the advisory from Health IT Security.

  • Zero Trust Adoption has reached a record high in healthcare. Okta found that 58% of surveyed healthcare organizations started implementing Zero Trust initiatives this year, compared to just 37% last year. Zero Trust relies on the idea that no device or user is trusted before being scrutinized by a set of strict authentication processes. Rather than a single technology or strategy, zero trust is a collection of cyber defenses that examine threats within and outside of a network perimeter. Read more from Health IT Security.

  • A new report from Fitch Ratings warns that cybersecurity investments could go by the wayside at not-for-profit hospitals, leaving them more susceptible to cyberattacks. According to third-party analyses cited in the report, cyberattacks targeting healthcare organizations have become more frequent and on average more costly. Read more from Fierce Healthcare.
