Article: Business, government and education leaders try to reinvent college from scratch. The Hechinger Report. 9/1/26

An entirely new college is being planned to not only change how higher education is delivered, and at what price, but to highlight ways the current business model no longer works... The project already tested its model last year on a group of students borrowed from other schools, which gave them academic credit for coming to the Greenway campus and doing hands-on work with faculty supervisors in a prototype semester. Instead of sitting in conventional classes and lectures, the students designed wind turbines and solar-powered traffic signals.

Article: More than half of colleges show signs of money problems. Students will suffer the consequences. The Hechinger Report. 9/8/26

A new interactive tool from The Hechinger Report, the College Financial Health Tracker, allows users to research whether a particular college is showing financial warning signs: dropping enrollment, declining revenue, growing deficits and shrinking endowments. The tracker also includes data on faculty layoffs and cuts to academic programs, as well as accreditation decisions.

Article: When natural disasters strike, these camps give kids a safe place to recover. The Hechinger Report. 9/2/26

Demand overwhelmed expectations. More than 120 children as young as 4 years old were dropped off that first day, the district reported, and the number swelled to 300 midweek. Laurie Morrison, Spokane Public Schools’ chief academic officer, said the district didn’t hesitate to pivot from its previously scheduled summer planning and professional development into disaster aid.

Announcement: OFRI's Forest Sector Workforce Summit Report

In May 2026, the Oregon Forest Resources Institute (OFRI) in partnership with the Western Forestry and Conservation Association convened a statewide forest sector workforce summit in Bend. Over two days, approximately 50 leaders from state and federal agencies, the forest industry, contractor associations, education providers, workforce development boards and nonprofits examined what it will take to build and sustain a workforce adequate to meet Oregon’s forest sector needs.

This report synthesizes what the presentations and breakout discussions covered, what participants identified as their priority challenges, and the possible ideas generated for collective action. The purpose is for general readers to understand the landscape of opportunities and challenges, and for the OFRI Board of Directors to use it to determine next steps for the organization.

Announcement: The 2026 Forest Report (Oregon)

A new OFRI-commissioned report synthesizes and interprets the most recent data and research related to Oregon’s forest resources and the economic contributions of the state’s forest sector, revealing that it not only remains a source of jobs for tens of thousands of Oregonians, accounting for about 4% of state employment, but also makes up 4% of Oregon’s gross domestic product.

Compiled by researchers from Oregon State University and the University of Idaho, The 2026 Forest Report is an update to a similar study OFRI published in 2019. The 2026 report acknowledges that much has changed in Oregon and the world since then, examining how events such as the global COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 Labor Day Fires have impacted Oregon’s forest sector. The sector also continues to be affected by growing threats to forests and timber supply, including wildfires, insect outbreaks and tree diseases.

Announcement: The theme of the 2027 Oregon Envirothon is "Soil Health Management: Agricultural Principles and Stewardship"

From Forest to Finished Product: Understanding Washington’s Working Forest and Wood Manufacturing Industry

In August, Washington Department of Natural Resources Youth Education and Outreach Program partnered with Pacific Education Institute and Hampton Lumber to bring K-12 educators together at Cispus Learning center in Randle for a workshop called “From Forest to Finished Product: Understanding Washington’s Working Forest and Wood Manufacturing Industry”. Over two days, educators explored how working forests are managed across family, industrial, and public lands; visited a small forest landowner’s tree farm, the Randle Lumber Mill, and a newly planted DNR site; and investigated the ecological, economic, and community needs that shape forest management decisions. Time in the field was paired with hands-on forestry activities and collaborative planning, giving educators opportunities to consider how they can bring these real-world questions and experiences back to their students.
