Spotlight on Research Bootcamp Participants

Early Career Faculty | Dr. Nancy Diaz-Elsayed | University of South Florida
|
In the fall of 2020 semester, Dr. Nancy Diaz-Elsayed transitioned to a tenure track faculty position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of South Florida as an Assistant Professor. Her thoughts on the BootCamp experience are, "I would like to participate in the FL-AGEP program to identify potential mentors in STEM, especially women of color in the professoriate who may provide guidance about how they successfully transitioned into their careers in academia, achieved tenure, and balanced their teaching and research loads".

Post-Doctoral Associate-Dr. Ivory Council, | Florida A&M University
|
As a Post-Doctoral Associate in the Center for Faculty Advancement at FAMU Dr. Council has been engaged in research that examines the barriers women of color face in advancing through careers in academia, particularly in STEM and the Social and Behavioral Sciences. She recognizes that her own career trajectory will be impacted by factors such as gender, race, and age. As she pursues a tenure-track position in Environmental Science, she knows that finding ways to overcome these barriers is paramount to her success. Dr. Council shares, "participating in the FL-AGEP and Research Bootcamp will grant me access to tools and mentorship that will further improve my chances of excelling in a traditionally male-dominated field. The bootcamp will provide an opportunity for me to begin honing my skills as a new mixed-methods researcher". Dr. Council plans to use the knowledge gained through AGEP and bootcamp participation to aid in securing a position in the professoriate.

The FL-AGEP Alliance team was accepted to present during a roundtable session for the 2022 Hawaii International Conference on Education. The roundtable highlights a work-in-progress paper focused on the implementation of the 2021 research bootcamps. Using counterspaces as a conceptual framework, we analyzed focus group data from a larger mixed-methods study to understand its impact on women of color dissertation dissertators, post-doctoral scholars, and early career faculty in STEM.
