September - November Professional Learning Opportunities

Below you will find a list of upcoming courses that are now available for enrollment in the PD Portal. For more information about any of these courses, please visit the PD Portal, open the course catalog, and review the syllabus. If you are interested in enrolling in a course, please consult with your in-house professional development specialist (IHPDS) to determine if the course meets your professional learning goals.


New: Tutor Coordinator Resource Hub


The Professional Learning Opportunities (ProLO) project is excited to announce a new Tutor Coordinator Resource Hub in the PD Portal. This resource hub contains documents and resources ProLO has created to support tutor coordinators, including the Tutor Coordinator Handbook (updated September 2022), webinar recordings, and information about the self-paced Tutor Training Modules. Any staff who train or work closely with volunteer tutors or classroom aides (including in-house professional development specialists and instructors) are encouraged to enroll in the Tutor Coordinator Resource Hub in the PD Portal catalog. Two New On-Demand Courses Available for Enrollment


Two new courses are now available on demand in the PD Portal.


Teaching With Illustrative Mathematics® Lessons supports instructors in identifying and teaching math lessons that meet their adult learners' needs. During the 10-week course, participants will complete online activities, teach math lessons, and meet with a coach to ask questions and receive support.


Introduction to Workforce Preparation Skills provides adult education practitioners with an introduction to Workforce Preparation Skills (Transferable Skills and Digital Literacy Skills) included in the PA Foundation Skills. Participants will examine how skills, competencies, indicators, and tasks align to everyday responsibilities at home, in the community, and in the workplace. For the final assignment, participants will meet with an adult learner to develop an action plan to improve at least four Workforce Preparation Skills aligned to a chosen occupation. This 30-day course is appropriate for adult education staff who support adults in identifying and meeting their educational and career goals.

IET Development Series Offered This Fall


The Integrated Education and Training (IET) Support Project invites your program to participate in the IET Development Series, beginning October 4, 2023. This professional development series includes three webinars, with coaching and guided activities between webinars, to support your design of an IET program. At the conclusion of the series, project staff will continue to support your action plan throughout the development and delivery of an IET, if that is the direction you choose. 


This training will be provided virtually, with the potential for coaching and follow-up provided in person. The Series is intended to increase your program and partner staff skills and knowledge to design quality IET programs for adult learners in your area.

Reentry Training Scheduled for October


The Reentry Resources and Best Practices for Working With Offenders course will be offered virtually this fall. This training is for adult education practitioners, and participants are highly encouraged to enroll with partners (parole, probation, workforce development partners, drug and alcohol, and other community programs). Team members will create an action plan to implement in their local area around reentry services.


The training includes live Zoom sessions on October 18, October 25, and November 9, 2023. Please review the syllabus and contact Chrissie Klinger at cok5111@psu.edu to enroll.

ESL Foundations: Classroom Applications for Language Instruction Principles and Theories - starts September 22, enroll by September 21.

Designing Supplemental Distance Lessons - starts October 2, enroll by September 29.


New! Student Support Coordinator Forum - starts October 2, enroll by September 29.

  • In this activity, student support coordinators will examine materials and identify strategies to support student recruitment, enrollment, retention, and/or transition. After implementing the strategies, participants will attend a face-to-face event where they will share displays around the impact of the strategies on their students.

Using and Scoring ACIRI - starts October 2, enroll by October 6 and complete the course by October 31.


New! Distance Learning Community of Practice

  • This community of practice starts October 5 and will give participants the opportunity to explore topics related to distance learning. You are welcome to enroll and attend some or all of the meetings. To receive PD credit, you must enroll by October 4 and attend all meetings.

New! Trauma-Informed Instructional Practices for Adult Educators

  • This 45-day on-demand course will offer participants a general overview of the topic of trauma in the adult education classroom. The course is appropriate for any student-facing staff interested in deepening their understanding of trauma-informed practice and incorporating it more intentionally into their programs and classrooms.

Offered On Demand


Improving Your Agency's Data Quality and Processes

Enroll anytime and have 60 days from the enrollment date to complete the course. Agency teams work through the training together and should include an agency leader who can enact change at the agency (such as the administrator, an assistant director, or a coordinator) and one person who is familiar with all aspects of the agency’s data entry process (such as the data quality specialist).

New Administrator Training

This online course provides important information for new adult education program administrators and is available to new administrators as needed throughout the program year. To enroll in the course, please email Callie Hazan at chazan@tiu11.org.

New staff members who are participating in the staff induction process enroll in this course after they have completed the required activities.

Staff Induction Module Courses

This series of modules is designed for new agency staff members as part of a customizable onboarding process. Existing staff may also choose to complete these modules at any time.


On-Demand Modules

On-demand modules are offered in the PD Portal to provide participants with flexible learning opportunities on a variety of topics. Please note that these on-demand modules are not part of the series of modules designed for staff induction.


Tutor Training Module Courses

These modules cover the foundational skills needed by volunteers working in adult education programs. The nine modules serve as a component of volunteer tutor and classroom aide training and can be completed at any time.

Friday Lunchtime Webinar Resources

The Professional Development System offers Friday Lunchtime Webinars most Fridays at noon. Enroll in Friday Lunchtime Webinar Resources in the course catalog to access the complete schedule of webinars, the webinar link, presentation slides, and recordings.


Program PD Team

Administrators, in-house professional development specialists, and digital literacy specialists enroll in the Program PD Team course in the PD Portal to access essential tools and resources related to professional development at their agency.


Student Support Coordinator Professional Development Resources

Any adult education staff person who provides student support services can enroll in this space in the PD Portal course catalog. Participants will gain access to resources, including the Student Support Coordinator Hub and networking events.


New! Tutor Coordinator Resource Hub

This hub contains documents and resources to support tutor coordinators. Any staff who train or work closely with volunteer tutors or classroom aides can enroll in this space in the PD Portal course catalog to access the resources.
