A Message from the Executive Director
The TLC community is very excited to start another year! As we kickoff the 2018-2019 school year, we anticipate that our KTS students will achieve success both inside and outside the classroom, and we also anticipate success for every person that walks through the TLC doors.

The professionals that work with all of the individuals that utilize our services have expectations that every child and adult meet their greatest potential. They provide positive experiences and build confidence. TLC's faculty, staff, and clinicians see individuals as a whole, and customize the services accordingly. Those we serve and their families are part of the team developing goals that meet their personal needs.

We look forward to a new school year and continuing to expand possibilities for all who turn to us for professional expertise.

Patricia A. Ritter, PhD
Executive Director, The Treatment and Learning Centers
The Katherine Thomas School
Summer at The Katherine Thomas School was anything but boring! The Lower-Middle School's Summer Enrichment program was hot! The summer theme was "Traveling the World," and boy did the students travel! Students explored our own country, USA, Europe, Asia, South American, Africa, and Australia through making food, recreating flags, learning about the different music, and playing the various sports popular in each country.

The High School Extended School Year stayed busy with interactive, fun, and themed activities centering around math skills, math applications, English, English enrichment, and practical life skills. Some of the themes integrated into the learning were "Spies" from the book "Stormbreaker" by Anthony Horowitz, and the solar system based on the book "Welcome to Mars" by Buzz Aldrin.
The Family Hearing Center
The Family Hearing Center held an event at Ingleside at King Farm on Wednesday July 11th. The focus was "Beyond Hearing Aids-Other Options." The event was a success, and The Family Hearing Center will hold monthly Support groups at Ingleside starting on September 13th based upon the great interest and need of community members.

Our Asbury Village full service clinic located in Gaithersburg has been supporting the residents who live at Asbury, and the monthly Hearing Loss Support group attendees have been learning better ways to speechread and cope with hearing loss. This month the group was fortunate to have a representative from a manufacturer come and demonstrate how to use a special device to enhance conversations around the table.

If you or a loved one with hearing loss are looking for support please don't hesitate to contact us at 301-738-1415
Outpatient Services
It’s hard to believe that summer is over and school is back in session! Our outpatient clinic was an exciting and busy place this summer and we have some pictures that highlight our adventures. In a nutshell, we had 2 fabulous service dogs visit the camps, Otis and Cookie, we had a construction vehicle come and let our campers fully explore the vehicle, and we had lots of fun water play outside!

The Outcomes Service
It has been a busy time at The TLC Outcomes Service. This summer The TLC Outcomes Service offered two sessions of DORS Pre Employment Transition Services (Pre-Ets) for transitioning youth. This program supports the development of work skills that are needed for success in the workplace. Sessions includes working at a store in the community to apply, practice and improve job skills learned at Outcomes. Last summer this program was much requested so this summer we offered an additional session. We filled both sessions this summer, had a successful program and plan to offer this program again next year. In the Fall we will offer other DORS Pre-Ets programs for transitioning youth called Life After High School. See attached flyer for more information.

In July we had a program review from the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration, our primary funding source. The review went very well. The State reviewer had a lot of good things to say about our systems and programs. Many thanks to the Outcomes team for their excellent work in preparing for the survey which included: reviewing client files and other documentation, preparing consumers for interviews, and revising policies and procedures.

The Outcomes Service is a community-based program providing services in supported employment, community integration and personal supports. We have a fleet of twelve vehicles which are used frequently seven days a week. Over the summer we have gotten two new vehicles, a car and a van replacing old ones. We are definitely "on the road."
