Time After Pentecost

Issue Of: September 1, 2022
"And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.” And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good."

God's Work Our Hands Sunday
September 11th

This day is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. Service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ – every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life – flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace. Below is the link to the ELCA's video about God's Work Our Hands Sunday.

Two Activities At Lord Of Life
On September 11th
Road Clean Up
Following both services on this Sunday, congregation members can participate in a Tabernacle Township Road Clean Up. We will form two groups. Each team will be cleaning about a one mile stretch of a road in the township. All equipment needed will be provided. If you can participate, please sign up on the sheet posted on the Narthex bulletin board or contact Carolyn and James Cuviello prior to that weekend. A link to our email is below.

From The Pastor's Desk:

I discovered a tiny blessing today that has me smiling from ear to ear... in our office pencil sharpener is a little sensor that when the pencil is fully sharpened, the point turns on a blue light to say "you're ready to go!" Part of the joy is that I had time to go sharpen my pencils - an investment in my future that could only be made once I had time for tasks that aren't time-sensitive.
I hope your summer gave you time for "sharpening your pencils" and finding joy. We all have ways that we can serve God this year, but it's hard to be cheerful, creative, or focused when we are scraping by. And the reality is that Covid has been a long-term trauma to almost every single person on earth. Trauma is a strong word, but it is the best descriptor of these past 2.5 years. Many of us have just gotten used to scraping by, whether that's socially, financially, physically, or spiritually - but that shouldn't be our norm. Jesus calls us to a life of abundance - and the Spirit is with us, guiding and encouraging. As your Pastor, please know that I am here to support you, to listen to your needs, and to seek a vision for hope, healing, community, and abundance - looking for things like that little blue light that say "there is more than you know; you don't have to do it all on your own."

For those of us who are refreshed, there is a great year ahead with much to celebrate (like our picnic and naming of Rev Dave Jones as Pastor Emeritus on Sept. 24) and much to do (God's Work Our Hands day on Sept. 11 - bring in cookies for local first responders and walk out to clean up a local roadway). Virtual ministries continue - all are welcome.

And if you need a little joy, there are pencils to be sharpened in the office - come and find what you are seeking. See you at Church!
Peace,
Pastor Wendolyn

"Many people mistake our work for our vocation. Our vocation is the love of Jesus."

Announcements From Pastor Wendolyn:
"Pulpit Exchange," Sunday, September 4th:
With a clergy couple, some people refer to their pastor's spouse as their "pastor-in-law," an indirect relation, but an important one! The Trozzos will share the pulpit exchange on Labor Day weekend. Pastor Eric will preach and lead worship at Lord Of Life at our 9:00 AM service, while Pastor Wendolyn will serve at Saint Matthew. Come and welcome Pastor Eric, and let him get to know Lord Of Life better!

Why Join A Church Choir?
(A "note" from Worship And Music Director, Rick Krause.)

  4. Improves memory, focus, and concentration.
  5. "Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.” – Martin Luther

  7. You can become friends with someone new and grow closer to long-time friends.
  8. Provides a different understanding of your faith and relationship with God.

Helping Hands Ministry
Wednesday, September 28th,
At 9:30 AM
(For The Christian Caring Center)
Lord Of Life’s Helping Hands ministry will resume on Wednesday, September 28th at 9:30 AM in Fellowship Hall. We will be meeting the last Wednesday of each month thereafter.
If you are unfamiliar with Helping Hands, it is a monthly ministry to make sandwiches for the homeless served by Christian Caring Center. We form an assembly line and make over 200 sandwiches in an hour. You are welcome to join the group. Jobs are easy – putting meat and cheese in a roll, placing sandwiches
in a baggie, counting sandwiches, putting them in a grocery bag. Everyone gets a small, easy task and a lot gets done quickly while we share some time together.
We will keep everyone safe by wearing gloves and masks, spacing ourselves, and venting the room. If you have any question, please contact Janell Reich.

MORE Athletic Shoe Collection
MORE stands for Modular Organic Regenerative Environments. The group is 100% funded by recycled athletic shoes, keeping them out of landfills. Donated shoes are sold to participating vendors in developing countries. Proceeds regenerate forests and jump start small farming co-ops in needy regions. This creates retail jobs while stimulating free enterprise. MORE provides basic supplies, tools, seeds (fruit-bearing mango, papaya, avocado and income producing mahogany), and agroforestry training to poor farming families, school children and rural villages.
You can contribute your used sneakers or athletic shoes by placing them in the collection box located in the church entryway. Please sneaker-type used footware only, no dress or other shoes.

Children's Books
For
Lutheran Social Ministry
We continue to collect new and gently used children's books. Lutheran Social Ministry will distribute them along with book marks we will make in September. Any donations should be placed into the box provided in the church entry. The last day on which you can make a donation is Monday, September 19th.
Walk For The Cure
Lord Of Life has entered a team in the annual Ocean City Making Strides Walk To End Breast Cancer. Please help! Every dollar counts. LOL’s Team will hold a bake sale before and after all services on the weekend of September 17th and 18th. We will also have a Wall Of Hope in Fellowship Hall where you may honor friends and family affected by breast cancer by making any donation to have their name placed on the team flag. The flag will be proudly carried by us during the 5K walk on Sunday, October 9th. You may also click on the link below to either join our team or support it by making a tax deductible online donation. Last year our team “finished” in 23rd place, out of 102 teams that participated, by raising $1,057. We are determined to top that mark this year. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
American Red Cross Blood Drive

The August blood drive held at Lord Of Life yielded an impressive 30 units of blood being donated! This included 2 power red collections. Thanks to all our donors and our organizers, Lu Hourihan and Bill Dreisbach. Also thank you to our church members who were present at the blood drive to provide any help with building facilities needs: Bill Reich, Jim Cuviello, Judy Lerner, and Sue Dreisbach.
Wednesdays Away To Begin September 7th

If you are looking for a time of spiritual renewal, the Cross Roads staff will, once again, offer an opportunity throughout the year with their Wednesdays Away program. Our time together includes prayer and conversation, led by a spiritual director and focusing on a different spiritual practice or theme each month. These retreats are open to all people interested in exploring new faith practices. Attend one or attend all—and be sure to invite friends to join you.
We are excited to share that we will return to offering in-person gatherings for the 2022-2023 season. Each retreat will be held from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM in person at Cross Roads (check-in will begin at 9:30 AM). The cost is $50 per in-person gathering (includes lunch). Out of love for our community and in response to the current pandemic, we have established the following protocols for the in-person Wednesdays Away sessions: participants must be vaccinated and show proof of vaccination as well as negative results from a COVID test taken within 72 hours of the event date. For more information and to register, click on the link below.

LifeLines Ending Song:
On the weekend of September 10th and 11th, we will return to our regular service schedule. This often marks the time of renewal, and many programs in our church will begin again after pausing in the summer months. Here is a tune that can inspire us all to join in and increase our involvement in doing God's work and our church's mission. Enjoy!

"Give me that old time religion. It's good enough for me!"
