Happenings At
Lord Of Life Lutheran Church
"Where everybody is somebody, and Jesus is Lord!"

Season Of
Pentecost

Issue Of: September 1, 2023

"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."
Philippians 4:4-7 NRSV

Coffee Hour Fellowship
Every Sunday

Join us for Coffee Hour every Sunday following the 9:30 AM service. Be with us in Fellowship Hall to socialize, catch up with church friends, enjoy some treats, and, of course, sip our "heavenly" coffee!
From The Pastor's Desk:

It finally happened - our dog got out of our fenced yard. But do you know how I found him? By his barking to be let in, from our front porch. Thank goodness! And he was so happy when I opened the door to let him back in to where he knew he would be safe and loved.

This is the season when we hope people will come back from shore houses and long trips, to find themselves greeted at Church where they know they will be welcomed and included. I'm so glad to be a part of this family of faith, where we stand ready to share the welcome we have received when we first arrived.

I hope you'll see September as a time to join or rejoin the groups at Church - Wednesday Bible study (starting Sept 13, at 10am and 7pm), choir and praise team, quilting and wellness team, and of course Sunday morning worship (staying at 9:30) with coffee hour, BFF, and other opportunities.

But there' still a lot of the world that doesn't know the blessing and healing that can be found at Church, so please think of who you can invite to - or back to - Lord of Life! Your personal connection is what opens the Church doors. See you at Church!

Peace,
Pastor Wendolyn

Tuesday Morning
Prayer Meeting
Tuesday, September 5th At 9:00 AM
Join us for a brief time (20-30 minutes) of guided prayer, which will be led by Pastor Wendolyn. When we did this for the National Day of Prayer in May, the response was so positive that we decided to continue it. So mark your calendars for 9:00 AM on the first Tuesday of every month! We will have a different theme/prayer focus each week and will also pray through the Lord of Life prayer list.
God's Work,
Our Hands Sunday
September 10th
For the 10th anniversary of God's Work, Our Hands Sunday, Lord of Life will have three projects, one of which we hope you will be able to join and participate. The first work group will be tying quilts in Fellowship Hall. The quilts will be donated to Lutheran World Relief in Maryland from which they will be distributed to those in need worldwide. The second group project will involve doing some light, outdoor, clean up work in our community. The third group will be making sandwiches for the Cathedral Kitchen in Camden, NJ. This non-profit feeds the underserved at their facility and also out into the nearby neighborhood. Each individual that is served an evening meal is also provided with a bag lunch. Hundreds of individuals are served daily. A sign up sheet for each group is in the Narthex.
Church Picnic
Sunday, September 17th
Following The 9:30 AM Church Service

All are welcome to attend this annual event! We will have our picnic rain or shine at the church campus. Join us for food, fellowship, and fun! Hot dogs, buns, and condiments will be provided, but we are asking that attendees sign up to bring salads, side dishes, and desserts. There will also be a bake-off contest! Make your favorite cake or baked treat and enter the contest. If you have questions about the picnic, contact Breanne Tomlinson.
Blessing Of The Animals Service
Saturday, September 30th, At 5:00 PM
You're invited to bring your pets to our service at 5:00 PM on Saturday, September 30th, where we will give thanks to God for all animals in creation and especially our companion animals. Bring a human friend, bring a furry friend, bring a creature of any kind, and we will join together in thanking God for these many gifts.

Adult Bible Study
"The Book of Psalms - Here, There, and Where to Look for God"
Beginning Wednesday, September 13th
10:00 AM & 7:00 PM
Continuing On Wednesdays
10:00 AM & 7:00 PM
Your Bible has 150 Psalms in it, but what do we do with this "Scriptural songbook?" Together, we will learn how some Psalms direct us to encounter God right here, or cry to a God who feels far away, or celebrate what God can do. Each week we will read 3 Psalms together, one focusing on God right here, one on God somewhere away from us, and one on where God might be moving us. We will also connect with some of the most well-known Psalms through hymns, poetry, and art.
Even if you can't join in regularly, please come and see what our Bible studies are all about. Beginner or scholar, coming every week or just once, sitting with friends or people new to you: you will feel welcome and develop ways to live out your faith alongside other seekers and disciples.
New Ministry Possibilities
A Message From Council President Bill Reich

NJ Synod Grant Opportunity And New Ministry Ideas
Earlier this year members of Council participated in a Financial Education program offered by the Synod.  As a result, Lord of Life is eligible to participate in a Grant Program also offered by the New Jersey Synod.  The Grant provides $2,000 to a church initiating a new ministry.  There is also a further opportunity to garner an additional $5,000 in matching funds if the congregation is so inclined.  Your council has spent some time gathering ideas for new ministry opportunities.  Those ideas are as follows:

Stephen Ministry:  This ministry provides Christ centered care to individuals in the congregation and community experiencing a crisis such as a terminal illness, grief, job loss, etc.  Interested members of the congregation would be trained to provide this care and support.

LOL Scholarship Ministry:  Establish a scholarship program for members of Lord of Life.  Create a structure of requirements for eligibility and application (i.e., participation in LOL activities, acolyte, usher, choir, special music, etc.).  Consider tying this into ongoing communications and support from the congregation to our students.

The Daniel Plan:  The Daniel Plan provides a God centered approach to achieving a healthy lifestyle by optimizing five key essentials – Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus and Friends.  The ministry would provide a means, via small groups to strengthen our congregation and, the greater community.
Caregiver/Parent Night Out Ministry:  The ministry would provide respite to Caregivers and Parents of Special Needs children.  Providing structured care (learning, playing, and eating!), for a couple of hours once or twice a month to children in grades 1 through 12 with special needs, would minister to the child and the parent/caregiver.  The ministry would be provided to members and the greater community.  Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Berlin, NJ offers a similar program with great success.

Art Show Ministry:   Establish a permanent set up for Art installations in the hall leading into and on the walls around Fellowship Hall.  Host a “First Friday Art Show” with a feature local artist each month.  They would be encouraged to invite their circle of friends and family into our building for the show.  This could be paired with artist talks, open mic nights, book signings, coffee shop and/or art instruction events.  Art would be generally 2-dimensional art including paintings/drawings, quilts, photography, needlework, etc.

As with any ministry, there needs to be a team of people to oversee the work and sustain the ministry. We have these ideas, but we do not, today, have a team of people to guide any of them so that they may get off the ground.
Please consider whether you would like to be a part of any of these new ministry opportunities. If you have an interest in any of the above ideas, please send an email to council@lordlife.us to let us know.
Also, if you have an idea for a new ministry for Lord of Life that could make use of grant funds to get started, email your church council with the idea.

P.E.P.
Thursday, September 21st, At Noon

Cynthia Tait will share information about The Daniel Plan as we share a meal with healthy choices. The meal will be provided. No need to bring a dish, but please sign up on the sheet posted to the Narthex bulletin board so we know how much food is needed.
The Daniel Plan was written by Pastor Rick Warren and fitness and medical experts Dr. Daniel Amen and Dr. Mark Hyman. The Daniel Plan is far more than a diet plan. It is an appetizing approach to achieving a healthy lifestyle by optimizing the five key essentials of faith, food, fitness, focus, and friends. The concepts in this program will encourage you to deepen your relationship with God and develop a community of supportive friends who will encourage you to make smart food and fitness choices each and every day.
Pastor Rick Warren, minister and author of The Purpose Driven Life, realized that he was devoting immense energy to caring for his mind and soul but completely neglecting his body. As a result, he was overweight and unhealthy. He did some research and found inspiration in the story of Daniel.
A review of the plan: The Daniel Plan preaches its own system, but this system is holistic and it excludes very little. Most importantly, it's quite effective in the lives of everyday people.

Helping Hands Ministry
Wednesday, September 27th,
At 9:30 AM
(For The Christian Caring Center)
Helping Hands is a monthly ministry to make sandwiches for the homeless served by Christian Caring Center. It meets the last Wednesday of each month. We form an assembly line and make about 200 sandwiches in an hour. Jobs are easy – putting meat and cheese on a roll, placing sandwiches in a baggie, counting the sandwiches, and putting them in a grocery bag. Everyone gets a small, easy task and a lot gets done quickly while we share some time together. We keep everyone safe by wearing gloves and masks, spacing ourselves, and venting the room. All are invited to join us! If you have any questions, please contact Janell Reich.

MORE Athletic Shoe Collection

MORE stands for Modular Organic Regenerative Environments. The group is 100% funded by recycling athletic shoes, keeping them out of landfills. Donated shoes are sold to participating vendors in developing countries. Proceeds regenerate forests and jump start small farming co-ops in needy regions. This creates retail jobs while stimulating free enterprise. MORE provides basic supplies, tools, seeds (fruit-bearing mango, papaya, avocado and income producing mahogany), and agroforestry training to poor farming families, school children and rural villages.
Our collection box is located in the church entryway area. Please give only sneaker-type used footwear, no dress or other types of shoes.

Thank you to all our blood donors and also our Lord of Life members who assisted with the blood drive: Sue & Bill Dreisbach, Lu & Ed Hourihan, Judy & Keith Lerner, James Cuviello, and Bill Reich. A total of 28 units (pints) of blood were collected, including 3 "Power Red" donations. Here is a brief note received from Red Cross blood drive coordinator, Kathleen Parasimo, "Excellent work! Thank you to all of you! We are struggling, so this is great! Thank you for all you do to support us!"

Your continuing financial support is essential to maintain the Ministries of Lord Of Life. Offerings are being collected at all church services. If you are still not attending services at our church building, your contribution can be mailed to the church (1 Winchester Court, Tabernacle, NJ 08088). Both Simply Giving and Tithe.ly remain in place for all to use.
Something new has been added to make it easier for you to contribute to Lord of Life using your cell phone! Simply scan the QR code below with your cell phone, and you will be able to make a donation using Tithe.ly.
