The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Returning
School buses are on streets, families are back from vacations, summer temperatures have moderated, and the program year begins again at The Falls Church. And I can barely contain my excitement.
This Sunday we return to a full complement of fall programming including two services (9:00 in the contemporary space and 11:15 in the historic church, with coffee hour in-between), children’s formation, youth formation, and the return of folks we haven’t seen in a long time, a very long time. We are regathering as a community, and for the new rector, this is like opening day. Your church staff and dedicated volunteers have worked hard for this day to happen and for the season that follows to be rich and full, with offerings and opportunities that bring us together, that teach us, that deepen our faith and our discipleship, and, ultimately, glorify the God who made us and loves us.
As we return to a life together this September, we continue to follow safety protocols. We will still be masked inside the building, children and youth activities are outside, and communion is still in one kind. Coffee hour will look different and adhere to safety protocols designed to protect us, especially the most vulnerable among us. Your church staff and volunteers have put in countless hours to think and talk about how to navigate this uncertain world, and I am forever grateful for their dedication and their creativity.
I am looking so forward to Sunday, to seeing you, to meeting many of you for the first time, to worshipping in the historic church for the first time, and so much more. In short, I look forward to seeing God at work in this place in ways I can’t even imagine. Sunday can’t get here soon enough!

During Father Burl’s first week with us back in July, the organ outdid itself trying to make a grand impression and caught on fire. While investigating the fried integrated circuit, the repair team found that the existing combination action (including the illuminated stop control) and relay would need to be replaced – essentially, our Steiner-Reck organ would need a new control system. While undertaking this major repair, it also made sense to address some other long-standing issues, including fixing a number of large unstable pipes with collapsing “toes,” and part of the interior action of the pedal chest. The work is projected to take three months and will cost approximately $55,000.
Please consider contributing to the restoration of our grand instrument, especially now that we are worshipping together in person and its presence in supporting and enhancing our services is missed all the more!
With gratitude,
Julie Huang Tucker, Music Director

The Little Free Food Pantry
On Fairfax Street near the church’s Thrift Shop is a small “take some food, leave some food” pantry (like the “little libraries” where people can take or leave a book). We are definitely seeing people use that pantry to supplement their groceries, and you can drop off non-perishable food items there at any time.
