Dear Prairie North Pastors and Congregations,

Grace and peace to you!

I’m very grateful for each of you and for the ministry we share across the District.

Recently, I had the opportunity to spend time with clergy beginning ministry in the NIC at New Clergy Orientation. It was wonderful to share time with those new to our conference, and I want to extend a warm welcome to all clergy newly appointed to our district. We are so glad you are here!

Church conference season begins soon! This year, all church conferences are to be completed by the end of November, so we’re getting an early start. Our first church conference is this Sunday! A special thank-you to those who agreed to hold your conferences in September. I know it’s coming up quickly, but I’m sure you’ll be glad when it’s all done!

A few things I’d like to highlight. You can find more information in the eNews below:

  • Monthly Clergy Zoom Gatherings: I’m resuming our Zoom gatherings for clergy. I look forward to having this regular time to connect, share, and support.
  • Fresh Expression Workshop: We have an excellent opportunity to learn more about Fresh Expressions with Michael Beck, whose work I’ve found deeply inspiring. It’s not too late to sign up, and I hope many of you will be able to join us!
  • Cross-Racial Cross-Cultural Pastors Luncheon: Pastors in CRCC appointments will gather for fellowship. I’m grateful for this opportunity for fellowship and conversation. Nearly 40% of Prairie North churches are served by CRCC pastors, and we celebrate their ministry while recognizing its unique challenges. Please keep our CRCC pastors in your prayers as we gather!

As we enter another busy season of ministry, please know how grateful I am for your faithful leadership and service. I continue to keep you, your families, and your congregations in my prayers.

Grace and peace,

DS Hwa-Young

Prairie North District Superintendent

Putting Faith Into Action:

Serving Near and Far

Across the Conference, our churches found creative ways to turn faith into action through summer mission experiences. From local service projects to weeklong trips in other states, youth and adults stepped outside their routines to serve others, build relationships, and discover what it means to be the hands and feet of Christ. A common thread among the experiences was a focus on people, not just projects. Participants repaired homes, packed food, served seniors, supported community organizations, and welcomed new neighbors.  Read more.

Read the shared Prairie North Mission stories:

Members of Cedarville and Warren UMCs joined together for a day of service at Midwest Mission in Pawnee, Ill. The team sorted and prepared donated uniforms for distribution and assembled United Methodist Committee on Relief personal hygiene and women’s personal dignity kits, providing practical resources for people experiencing crisis.

Nearly 50 youth and numerous adult leaders participated in Christ UMC of Rockford’s annual Youth Workcamp, serving churches, nonprofits, and community sites throughout the Rockford area. Under the theme RE:New, centered on Romans 12:2, the workcamp combined worship, fellowship, and hands-on service, with the wider congregation supporting participants through meals, transportation, donations, prayer, and service.

Read more Mission Trip stories from across the conference.

If your church is missing, please share your story and photos with Lisa Smith (LSmith@UMCNIC.org), and we will continue updating the story as more information is received.
