Peter asks a question in the gospel of Matthew, that guides us in our prayer this weekend. Can you almost hear Peter addressing Jesus, “Jesus, can I limit forgiveness, may I put a number on the times I am to share mercy and forgiveness?” The beauty of Jesus’ response is that mercy is to flow freely and continually in our lives, as those loved and forgiven of our sins and transgressions by God. Jesus says that there is not to be a terminal point, an end point to our acts of mercy, compassion, forgiveness and efforts at reconciliation.
At the Masses this weekend, the preface used prior to the Eucharistic Prayer II for Reconciliation, for the Community of St. Mary’s will be:
It is truly right and just that we should give you thanks and praise, O God, almighty Father, for all you do in this world, through our Lord Jesus Christ.
For though the human race is divided by dissension and discord, yet we know that by testing us you change our hearts to prepare them for reconciliation.
Even more, by your Spirit you move human hearts that enemies may speak to each other again, adversaries join hands, and peoples seek to meet together.
By the working of your power it comes about, O Lord, that hatred is overcome by love, revenge gives way to forgiveness, and discord is changed to mutual respect.
Therefore, as we give you ceaseless thanks with the choirs of heaven, we cry out to your majesty on earth, and without end we acclaim. Holy, Holy, Holy…
During these challenging times, these days of increased stress and tension in our world, community and at times in our lives, may we look to God more directly, more regularly, for prayerfully as we live and pray with one another.
Earlier this month I received the following reflection from a parishioner. He shared that “the little motto is one he strives to live by and as a fellow golfer; I think you may be able to relate to the analogies. The motto helps me to keep a positive attitude and outlook.” I read and reread his “motto” and truly believe it can apply to all people, you do not need to be a golfer for it to apply to you, if you so choose.
Winners and Losers – BE A WINNER!!!
THE WINNER is always part of the answer.
THE LOSER is always part of the problem.
THE WINNER always has a program.
THE LOSER always has an excuse.
THE WINNER sees a green near every sand trap.
THE LOSER sees two or three sand traps near every green.
THE WINNER says “Let me do it for you.”
THE LOSER says “ That’s not my job.”
THE WINNER sees an answer for every problem.
THE LOSER sees a problem in every answer.
THE WINNER says “It may be difficult, but it’s possible.”
THE LOSER says “It may be possible, but it’s too difficult.”
Set and Reach Your Goals Every Day!
The St. Mary’s Parish Council met earlier this week. Our agenda items and conversation centered on the need for creativity and flexibility this fall for ministry to resume at the Church of St. Mary. We also discussed issues and topics for the Parish to address in October, when we as a church pray for and work for respect for all life. More information will be forthcoming in the bulletin for parishioner’s prayers and reflection.
I also shared with the council the following note that was shared with heads of parish ministries last week. My note read; on another important matter, I am asking for your assistance in sharing the following apology with as many people as you deem appropriate in your ministry and fellow parishioners you regularly meet, pray with, and serve the Lord.
Last month, the weekend of August 7th, there was an article in our Parish Bulletin / Parish web blast on Friday. I trust the staff of the Office of Domestic Violence Outreach of the Archdiocese of Chicago. That request included an item which had the “Black Lives Matter” insignia in a photograph and phrase concluding the article.
We have shared with parishioners many of their bulletin articles and efforts offering help, hope, and assistance to victims and families of domestic violence. We received the article from the Archdiocese that appeared in our bulletin in July, a recent and timely article about domestic abuse. This article got past my staff and past me regarding the content and photo of Black Lives Matter. In this note to all heads of parish organizations, I apologize for this and for any confusion, frustration, or misunderstanding that may have arisen from this. As Catholics, as parishioners, as members of the Church of St. Mary we hold and follow Catholic teaching that from conception to natural death all life is sacred and gift from God. We strive to teach, preach and encourage parishioners of all ages to RESPECT ALL LIFE.
As the pastor of St. Mary’s, I will do all that I can so that such an article does not appear in our publications causing misunderstanding and perhaps even scandal because of its publication in our parish.
These are demanding and challenging times for all people. At St. Mary’s we are supporting the beginning of another year of ministry, education, and service. May all that we do, led by God’s Spirit, deepen the faith and conviction of people to live holy lives, witnessing to one another our belief in God and respect for all of our sisters and brothers.
May God bless you with a merciful, compassionate and forgiving heart, not counting and limiting the times that we express mercy, compassion and forgiveness.

9/11: The Catholic Church Remembers
|
|
911. For years, those numbers simply meant a call for help. Now they also remind us of September 11, 2001, the date of the worst terrorist attack on the United States of America and one of the deadliest days ever on American soil. To mark the anniversary of 9/11, we gathered reflections and remembrances from clergy who ministered to victims and their families, and others who were impacted by the tragedy.
In October 2001, the United States Congress passed a joint resolution designating that every September 11th be observed as "Patriot Day." The resolution requests that U.S. government entities and interested organizations and individuals display the flag of the United States at half staff on Patriot Day and that the people of the United States observe a moment of silence in honor of the individuals who lost their lives as a result of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Pontifical Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land
|
|
This year, due to the pandemic, it was not possible to take up the Good Friday Collection dedicated to supporting Christians living in the Holy Land. Pope Francis has accepted the request to move this gesture of sharing, which concerns the whole Church, to September 13. Why on September 13? Because that is the Sunday closest to the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which is celebrated with particular solemnity in Jerusalem.
The collection in favor of the Holy Land is a small gesture of solidarity that the whole Church is called to make in order to support the care of the Holy Places of Christianity, from the Holy Sepulcher to the Basilica of the Nativity and other lesser known sanctuaries, as well as supporting the pastoral action of the parishes in the Holy Land.
Thanks to the help of Christians from all over the world, this has been the mission of the Franciscan Friars in the Holy Land for eight centuries. It is hoped that they will be able to continue in their mission through the help of each of you on September 13.

Adjustment to the Time for Daily Mass at Our Church of St. Mary
|
|
Update: Daily Mass offered at 7:30am Monday-Saturday starting on Saturday, 9/5/2020.
During these COVID days we have adjusted to the church building being closed. We have adjusted to Mass being streamed at 12:00 Noon. We have adjusted to Mass resuming with a limited number of people in attendance. We have adjusted to changing our routine, registering for Mass, arriving on time, entering the south doors of the Church, being nourished in Word and Sacrament. We give thanks to God for the nourishment, sustenance and strength received from the Eucharist; spiritual communion as well as receiving the Holy Eucharist, Jesus present under the appearance of bread and wine.
After consultation with the Parish Council and the Parish Staff, beginning Saturday, September 5th, there will be another adjustment in the daily Mass schedule at St. Mary’s. Daily Mass will be offered at 7:30 AM Monday through Saturday. All are welcome to join us to be nourished in Word and Sacrament around the table of the Lord.
Why this latest change in routine and adjustment to what is familiar at the Church of St. Mary?
The answer is safety. Safety for our school children. Safety for our parishioners. Safety for those who come to the Church of St. Mary for Mass. The new school year is presenting unprecedented challenges and opportunities for our parish community. Instead of having two entry points for the school children, there will now be five. Students will arrive at St. Mary’s at 8:30 AM to begin school at 8:45 AM. Cohorts of our school students will enter daily through the Green Bay road parking lot entrances. If our parishioners, if our guests, if our worshippers at Mass and Rosary Prayer Group are able to attend Mass and pray together, prior to the beginning of each school day, the chance for accidents or worse happening with people driving in the parking lot as students are trying to get to school on time this upcoming school year.
Change to routine is challenging and difficult. We like our familiar routines. I pray that many parishioners of St. Mary will be able to regularly attend daily Mass, Monday – Saturday at 7:30 AM beginning on Saturday, September 5th. As with the adjustments in our routines that have taken place since March 2020, we will monitor this decision and update the community on its duration. Please pray for our school, administration, faculty, students and families. Know that they will be praying for our parishioners and all benefactors of the School of St. Mary!

GENERAL GUIDELINES
Below are a few guidelines for being in the Church. There are numerous signs around the exterior and interior of the Church to help facilitate these new patterns. Due to the limited capacity, number of parishioners and our reduced Mass schedule, we ask that you sign up for a weekend Mass every other week and one weekday Mass to allow others to be able to pray in the Church and celebrate Mass in person. If the day before, there are still open slots, you may sign up.
-
Church Entrance: The south door, near the elevator, is the only entrance into the Church. Please form a line along the exterior south wall of the Church and a volunteer greeter will let you in.
-
Arrive On Time: South Entrance doors will open 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass and it is strongly encouraged you arrive by the time the doors open as time is needed to Greet visitors and allow Ushers to seat you.
-
Entrance Doors Close: South Entrance doors will close at the start of Mass to allow volunteers to attend Mass. Thank you for allowing yourself time to arrive.
-
Volunteers: Parish volunteers will be on site to help direct and guide all of us as we begin to open and re-enter the Church.
-
Masks/Face Covering: Mask or face coverings are required to be worn by all individuals at all times while in the Church building.
-
Hand Sanitizer: Sanitize your hands as you enter the Church building.
-
Social Distance: Maintain proper social distancing of 6 feet apart, unless you are with somebody who lives in the same household as you. There are floor markings to help facilitate this.
-
100 Persons Maximum: A maximum of 100 individuals (excluding the priest and other ministers) are allowed in the Church at one time. In inclement weather, personal vehicles would be a necessary shelter while waiting.
-
Church Exit: The north doors onto the main plaza will be the only exit from the Church (unless you require use of the elevator).
-
Church East Entrance - Emergency Exit Only: Please do not use the East doors onto the stairways for either entering or exiting.
-
Surface Sanitizing: All surfaces touched by persons are sanitized prior to the next opening of the Church.
-
Restrooms Unavailable: For the safety of all, the restrooms will not be available, unless it's an emergency.
-
Registration Required: Registration is required through SignUp Genius for Public Mass, Adoration, Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. 85 slots will be available online and 15 slots will be available by calling the office for those who do not have access to technology.
-
SignUp Availability: SignUps for the next week's schedule will be available through SignUp Genius after 9:00am on Friday's. Registration is required for Public Mass & Prayer, Adoration, Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms. If you need assistance, please contact the Parish Center Office during normal business hours at receptionist@churchofstmary.org or call 847-234-0205. Leave a message and they will call you back.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteer Tasks:
- Greeters will assist in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, participate in the liturgy/sacrament, and exit the church.
- Team members will combine some of the functions of an usher, such as directing participants to appropriate seating/waiting areas, but will include additional responsibilities, including, but not limited to, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill.
- Given the circumstances, greeters will need to be tactful and firm paying careful attention to all people on-site. To support parish greeter teams, rudimentary training tips on handling difficult situations will be provided.
- Volunteers will ensure that: all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees' arrival/departure, and windows are opened.
- Volunteers will help maintain and sanitize essential and trafficked areas of the church after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if necessary, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.
May God grant you peace and comfort in this time.

September 13, 2020: Gospel Reflection for the Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
|
|
We continue the theme of forgiveness in this Sunday’s readings. In the Book of Sirach we hear the prophet points out that those who cling to sin are also clinging to anger and hatred. We can all recall a time when we feel someone wronged us. And for whatever reason we decide to cling to the emotion of being wronged, of being hurt and we want to hold on to it to enact retribution. Sirach is quick to point out that when we do that, when we refuse to let hurts go and move forward, then our sins are also held against us. We have all done things that we are sorry about. We want that clean slate. It brings us peace to know that God forgives us unconditionally. Well, if God can forgive us why do we think we don’t have to forgive others? To paraphrase Sirach, when we come to the end of our physical life, do we want to feel we should have been more forgiving? Then that gives us our answer as to what we need to change now in our lives.
In our gospel for Sunday Jesus takes the theme of forgiveness and goes deeper as Jesus tends to do. He gives us one heck of a hyperbole for a parable to really get his point across. Peter wants to ask Jesus about how many times we should forgive each other and he wants to overshoot what he thinks the answer will be in order to make himself look good. When he suggests seven times (Old Testament said three times) he expects to be praised but Jesus tells him “…not seven times but seventy-seven times.”. Jesus is essentially saying that we always forgive. There is no end to forgiveness. If we start keeping count how many times we have forgiven people, that’s not keeping count; that’s keep score.
Jesus tells a parable: heaven is like a king who brings forth a debtor. Now this is no small debt the person owes, but one so large he could never realistically pay it back. The debtor begs for mercy even though one can’t fathom why they would be granted mercy. But the king was full of love and compassion and forgave the debtor all his debts. At this point the debtor has a choice, to pass on this love and compassion and show mercy to others or not.
The debtor runs into someone who owes him money, much less than he owed the king. When the second debtor begs for mercy to the first one, even using the same words as the first had; the first debtor refuses to show any mercy and throws the man & his entire family in jail until they can pay off what they owe. The first debtor refused to show mercy even after he had been shown mercy. When the king heard of this he was upset that the one he showed mercy to refused to use the king’s example and pass on mercy. So the man & his family were thrown into jail.
God is infinite love, much more than we could ever imagine. If God can forgive all things, and goodness knows we are all grateful beyond words that God forgives us, then should we not take God’s example and forgive others? That doesn’t mean it’s always easy or happens quickly, but through prayer and the Holy Spirit we too can pass on God’s love and mercy.

The Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass that was scheduled for Sunday, September 13 is cancelled to better ensure the health and safety of all. We regret the cancellation of this celebration, as the commitment of 50 years of marriage is not only a significant and heartfelt milestone for the couples and their families, but for us as a Church. While it is not possible for an in-person celebration this year, we cannot overlook the deep need to honor these couples in their commitment to the sacrament of marriage.
You are encouraged to please register with other jubilarians to receive a video of congratulations from the Cardinal. The parish receptionists are happy to assist if you need their help. Please contact the Parish Office at 847-234-0205. Otherwise: Registration can be done by clicking here. The recorded video of congratulations will be distributed to the jubilarians via email. In addition, the Office of Lifelong Formation will issue a certificate in honor of the jubilarians to be sent to their physical home address. It is our hope to celebrate the 2020 jubilarians during the 2021 Golden Wedding Mass. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

“For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s” ROMANS 14:8
This is the essence of stewardship – everything we have and everything we are is a gift from God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts that God has given us, especially our very own lives. Pray to God - daily - and ask Him how He wants you to use the gifts He has given you.
