We will have ribbons for each athletes every week and need parents help pass them out at the end of practice on Monday or Tuesday.

Many are not reading this entire Newsletter!! It is impossible to keep up with the team if you do not read it. Also Coach Jeremy adds his Coaches Corner info for you to read or show to your athletes!! Please do this, as practice is hard for them to focus on it!

Coaches Corner

What a day at O’Melvany! The team is getting in racing shape and bringing the competition!

First race jitters, first race pressure, first race pain, first race FUN…. First race is in the bag! Remember what I said, it’s ok to analyze, but do it quickly and then move on. I am confident many of you walked down that hill to your car on cloud 9, while others were just glad you made it through. My goal for each of you, yes, I’m talking to YOU 😊, is to experience cloud 9 every week!

You might be wondering if that is possible for you. I believe it is and I’ll give you some pointers below.

First, I want to highlight one athlete who is getting after it! Athena Estrada, one of our Junior Olympians! This young lady had an ankle setback over the summer and came into the season behind where she would want to be. I told her to be patient and it’ll come. At the pre-season meet she finished 23rd and I mentioned to her at practice, that’s not where she belongs and she’ll be moving up every week. She sure did move up, TO SEVENTH PLACE! She already took a minute off and is setting herself up for another path to JO’s. Is she super-human? Is she better than YOU? I don’t think so. Athena BELIEVES in herself, she listens to and executes the workouts and is one tough cookie!

If you are wondering if you can do the same, the answer is YOU CAN! You can improve, you can get faster, you can beat more of your competition, just remember a few pointers:

  1. Listen to the workouts and do them as prescribed. Sometimes that means you need to separate from a buddy, or tell your buddy LET’S GO. Sometimes that means challenging yourself to run with, or closer to faster athletes. The most important thing is to have an active mind that continually tells your body to keep pushing! And that active mind continually tells yourself YOU CAN DO IT, DON’T GIVE UP!
  2. Do the extra’s with perfection. Stretching and drills and core are those extras. You hear me when I’m walking around during these extras showing the proper way and reminding you of the importance. It’s impossible to be perfect, your parents know that 😊… but… YOU CAN execute the stretches, drills, and core with perfection! Make that your goal!
  3. Eat well to prepare. Remember, nutrition is something you must control. From breakfast, to snacks at school, to lunch, and snacks at home, then finishing with a solid dinner after practice, eating well keeps you running like a Ferrari instead of a Pinto!
  4. Race hard and race smart. Racing smart means to run YOUR race. You can’t show up on the line and miraculously win the race when you aren’t typically racing at the front. However, if you pay attention to your competition, reviewing the results, you can start to plan for your next race. Look at the few runners ahead of you on the results. Maybe 2 or 10 or 15 seconds ahead. Then answer this question: when did they pull ahead of me and why? Next race you go in telling yourself: I’M GOING TO STICK WITH THEM TO THE END! Remember that fact about racing, it hurts just while you are racing… 5 min after, you are back to normal running around with friends. My recommendation, do a little research before Saturday, and identify some competition you want to beat this week! And then, go RACE HARD and do it!

This week we’ll continue to enjoy some hills, get some tempo on the flat roads, and run some half mile loop repeats! Tonight, work on having consistent effort and form, maybe running just a little bit faster than you have been running your Monday run. Tuesday will be a tempo effort run. The purpose of this run is to push that line from being in control to falling apart. You want to feel strong, breathing heavy but not like you are racing, no talking with your buddies. Thursday is interval night and that means while you are running the interval you are putting more effort in then the race. The more you can “feel” like a race in practice, the more natural that “feeling” will be in the race!

Great job everyone! Great start to the season! Now set your sites on moving up the rankings every Saturday!

See you out there!

Parent Reflection for races and practice

All the races went very well on Saturday. We see great improvement for all the athletes. I am sure you saw a few athletes crying, at the end of the races. This is a very normal reaction as they have really pushed themselves. Please be sure to

be supportive and comfort them.

After Race Cool Down- Athletes are encouraged to cheer their team mates on at the finish line as they finish, but it is very important that they meet their age group coach at the tent after all of them has finished for cool down and stretches. This is a great time for team bonding, and will also give their coaches time to reflect and give feed back. All athletes should cool down together.

Bathroom issues - During practice we are having a lot of athletes needing to go to the bathroom. It is very hard for the coaches to stop the workout to take them. Central Park is very busy and we do not want to send them alone. Please try to take them to the restroom BEFORE Practice

Sincerely,
