On September 8th, the world learned of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Her seven decades on the Throne exemplified devotion to duty and an unshakable commitment to service. Her reign helped define an entire chapter of Canadian and world history. She was the only monarch many Canadians had known in their lifetime.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that September 19th would be a federal holiday and National Day of Mourning. Understandably, the employer community has questions regarding their obligations and best practices. Yesterday afternoon, Premier Horgan announced that K-12 schools, public post-secondary institutions, and most Crown corporations will also be closed.
At a glance:
- This holiday is for federal employees including the public service and postal workers, as well as the provincial public sector, including teachers.
- It is not mandatory for private employers to give this paid day off (whether federally or provincially regulated) but rather at the discretion of each employer.

The Province is inviting employees and employers to submit their views via a survey about whether the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation (September 30) should be designated a provincial statutory holiday under the Employment Standards Act, starting in 2023.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a federal statutory holiday which commemorates the history and legacy of the residential school system, honours the resilience, dignity and strength of survivors, and remembers the children that never came home.
The Richmond Chamber of Commerce's office will be closed on September 30th, 2022 in observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
