Meet Alice and Katjarria! Alice lived in her car for over a year after the passing of her husband shook the foundation of her life. Alice’s daughter, Katjarria (pictured to her left) went to live with an older sibling until Alice could regain safe and comfortable housing for both of them. It pained them to be apart, but it was the best they could do at the time. Alice is employed, and unfortunately came down with COVID-19. When she returned to work, her hours were reduced.
On a hot July evening, Alice came into the Brian Garcia Welcome Center where a member of our Outreach team, Heather (pictured to her right) got to know Alice, performed an assessment, and connected her to services on the spot. She was able to get a bed in the CASS overnight shelter, as well as a permit to park on Campus.
Alice was determined – she had her documentation ready and stayed the course. Ultimately, Heather helped Alice to obtain an Emergency Housing Voucher. A couple weeks later, with some move-in cost assistance from HSC, Alice and Katjarria were reunited and moved into their own apartment!
Campus partners collaborate every day to help people find their way from street to home. We are humbly grateful for the generosity and support that continues to make this possible.
