Dear Church Hill Faith Family,
In the aftermath of the senseless and horrific mass shootings earlier this year in Buffalo, Uvalde, and Highland Park, the Missions Committee resolved to provide the congregation with a plan of action for how we as people of faith can respond to the crisis of gun violence in our country. On Sunday, September 18, this plan will be presented.
It is important that our advocacy for meaningful reforms which will help prevent gun violence be grounded in our Christian faith. It is not God’s will that we live in a country where innocent people are routinely shot and killed while engaging in such commonplace activities as watching the latest blockbuster in a movie theater, worshipping in a church or temple or mosque, shopping at a grocery store, attending a parade, or going to school. It is never God’s will for parents to bury their children. As Christians, we are called to promote human flourishing and to work toward a more peace-filled, just world for the generations who will come after us. As we advocate for meaningful gun safety reforms, let us not be chiefly motivated by partisan politics but by a genuine desire to be an instrument of God’s peace.
For those who are unable to attend the presentation of this gun violence prevention plan after worship on the 18th, it will be published in the Chimes next week.
