Coach Jeremy's Notes to the Team
Yo, Yo Storm Team!!!
What an Invitational we just had last Saturday! Everyone has to realize, the top 10 in every one of the races represents as many as 25% of what will end up being the top 25 in the nation!!! Did you understand what I just said? You all just raced against THE VERY BEST IN THE NATION!!
That is such a unique experience we have racing in SoCal.
You might have noticed from the results there were Team scores. A quick run down on that is the following: XC is actually a team sport. Your team scores based on where you finish in the race. The top 3 or 5 score. That is why in larger races we emphasize even more the need to pass even 1 runner. Big races can come down literally to 1 point. There are even ties, as you saw in one of the races. The tie brake then is decided by the next runner, either 4 or 6. At the end of the day when you race XC you aren’t really racing the clock, you are racing to pass as many of your competition as possible!
Check the standings this week for the conference. Remember that the top 8 are invited to run in the post season and represent both Storm and the conference at the Junior Olympics!!! We have a lot of athletes striving to be All Americans, or the top 25 in the race.
This part of the season is always important because we start shifting workouts to more speed, faster paces, with the goal of fine tuning to run the best races as we get to the end of the season. We call this “peaking” at the right time. It’s not time to let off the gas pedal yet, so keep working hard. Keep listening to the workouts so you execute to the best of your ability and keep improving.
Speaking of improving, I want to highlight 2 athletes this week, and I can’t wait to share about them at practice. I have a special gift for these recognitions, and Stephen don’t worry, I’ll bring yours this week. Speaking of Stephen, he is a great example of realizing potential and working hard to achieve greatness. At O'Melveny he ran a 31:47, this week he ran a 24:42!!!! Before the race I told him if he just simply ran the whole race, he’d break 26 minutes. So he goes out and runs a 24:42!!! Boom… keep up the hard work and congratulations on becoming a runner!!!
This week we will be running a brand new course. It should be fun and hilly…
As we prepare you’ll be enjoying movie hill, killer hill, evil twin, and half mile loop repeats!!! It’s going to be a great week of training so BE READY!!!
Remember, everyone hurts when they train and race. Your goal: hurt more, endure more, and be ready to crush your competition!!
If you want it, it’s yours to get!! Just ask Stephen how he felt this week after the race. Really, ask him… I haven’t seen a bigger smile and a prouder athlete.
The team is here to share your success with, to challenge each other, to encourage each other, and ultimately to drive each other to be the most excellent you can be!
Thanks for your hard work!!
Keep it up!!
