Webinar:

Assessment of Safety and Operation Performances of CFIs and DDIs in Utah

Date: Wednesday, September 16, 2026

Time: 9:30-10:30 AM CT (8:30-9:30 AM MT)

Delivery: Live Zoom Webinar with Q&A

In this webinar, you will learn research findings on:

  • Results, best practices, and lessons learned from implementations of diverging diamond interchanges (DDIs) and continuous flow intersections (CFIs) in Utah.
  • Establishing performance metrics and evaluation criteria to assess the success and effectiveness of DDIs and CFIs to support their planning, design, and implementation.

Presenter:

Dr. Yu "Fred" Song is an assistant professor of civil and architectural engineering and construction management at the University of Wyoming. His research interests are traffic operations and safety, driver behavior, intelligent transportation systems, and vehicle automation. Before joining the University of Wyoming he was a researcher with the Connecticut Transportation Institute at UConn.

This webinar is offered by the Transportation Learning Network, a partnership with MDT, NDDOT, SDDOT, WYDOT and the Center for Transformative Infrastructure Preservation and Sustainability.

Other upcoming webinars:

Improving Compatibility of Truck Platooning with Existing Infrastructure via Development of Dynamic Operational Rules on Highway Networks -- September 23, 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. CT. Truck platooning presents a promising solution for reducing fuel consumption and emissions while enhancing freight transport capacity. However, the adaptivity of this technology to diverse roadway infrastructure remains a critical research need. This project aims to address the needs by designing and prototyping a dynamic truck platooning regulatory system. Presenter: Yu "Fred" Song, PhD, University of Wyoming.

A Sustainable Upgrade of Bridge Decks with Ultra-High-Performance Concrete Overlays -- September 24, 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. CT. The goal of the research is to explore a sustainable solution that can extend the longevity of constructed bridge decks by placing an overlay system with a state-of-the-art construction material, ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). Specific objectives are: 1) to fundamentally understand interactive mechanisms between bridge decks and UHPC-overlays, contingent upon the degree of composite action; 2) to perform theoretical studies that can encompass various situations involving assorted material and geometric properties; and 3) to develop practice guidelines for the sake of bridge engineers and government officials who oversee bridge management. Presenters: Wajdi Ammar, PhD, student at the University of Colorado Denver, and Jimmy Kim, PhD, University of Colorado Denver.
