Dustin Johnson: Boo-Hoo! No Ryder for You
Dustin Johnson said he would have been selected to this year's United States Ryder Cup team had he not "defected" to LIV Golf.
Johnson, a two-time major champion, instead finds himself a spectator despite being a part of five previous American teams.
Johnson picked a different 'Team' when he 'Defected' to LIV, as he stated, and became its Million Dollar Poster Boy. Regardless,
the "No-crybabies Rule" is still in force for the USA Team, so, sorry, there's no room at the Inn. Boo Hoo! Enjoy Dallas!
And while we're at it, the USA Team needs to upgrade its image. Why not include Sahith Theegala and Tony Finau and axe Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. What have those two done lately, (except lose)? It's time for some talented, popular new pros to represent America's diversity to the world.

Kuiper, Krukow: No. 1,
And They’ll Be Back In 2024
by Dave Newhouse
| |
The Voice of local broadcasting is a shared symmetry: Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow. Baseball or non-sports, radio or television, these two men are the electronic medium’s gold standard in the Bay Area, while also golden nationally.
And, good news, they aren’t going away.
“That’s the plan,” Krukow confirmed. “We’ll go on as long as we can.”
“If we can do it,” Kuiper added, “we’ll do it until we can't.”
There was concern, for combined health reasons, that this remarkable duo might part after 30 years together doing Giants baseball.
Krukow, 71, suffers from inclusion body myositis (IBM), which affects the quadriceps and hand muscles. He needs a walking stick at the ballpark, and he no longer travels to away games.
Kuiper, 73, has an undisclosed cancerous condition that required chemotherapy, causing him to miss most of the 2021 season, and Giants trips beyond.
“I go from pet scan to pet scan every five months,” Kuiper disclosed, “and so far everything is good.”
“My health is pretty good, though my leash is small,” Krukow elaborated. “I can’t fly anymore. I can’t drive. I live three blocks from the ballpark with my wife Jennifer (during baseball season), and I use a scooter to get there.”
Krukow, whose home is in Reno, and Kuiper, who resides in Danville, were Giants teammates who evolved as lifetime friends and celebrated announcers. They’ve been ranked as baseball’s best broadcasting team four times, finishing first in 2022. And though medically challenged, they could be ranked No. 1 again this season.

All-Star in 1986
| |
Second baseman Duane Kuiper played for the San Francisco Giants from 1982-1985 and compiled a career .271 batting average
“You have to prove yourself every day; you can’t feel sorry for yourself,” Krukow pointed out. “It’s still really fun for me. I get pumped every night going to the ballpark. Duane loved it as a player, and he still loves it. We entertain each other every game, and it’s intense. We’re honest, but we’re not vindictive.”
“How we feel about each other away from the booth is how we feel about each other in the booth,” said Kuiper. “We know each other so well. With Mike, it’s his humor, his wit, his love for the game, and his loyalty to me. It’s the same exact thing if you asked me what I’d be looking for in a wife. I love the guy.”
Sadly, Kuiper was widowed in February 2022 when his wife of 36 years, Michelle, the mother of his two children, passed away. Kuiper needed Krukow then in a different way, and his friend came through as ably as he could.
“The loss of his wife was devastating,” said Krukow. “We comforted him as best we can.”
Through everything they’ve endured, Kuiper and Krukow continue describing Giants baseball in an entertaining, informed manner that hasn’t grown stale after three decades of a challenged partnership. When Kuiper is traveling with the team, Krukow joins him in the TV booth, superficially, from the Comcast studio in San Francisco. But their closeness, and technology, make it seem as if they are bodily in the same booth.
However they've managed, they continue to bring consistency, clever commentary, sharp analysis, time-proven perspective, and interspersed humor in an unmatched manner that has garnered them a bunch of Emmy awards.
“The game is changing,” Krukow summarized. ”It’s not the game I played, but it’s still an intriguing game. Duane and I remind ourselves how hard the game is, so we treat it with fairness. It’s such a hard thing to stay relevant, but we’ve watched the game through our children’s eyes, and we’re now doing it with our grandchildren. So it never gets stale.”
“If I’m entertaining Mike, then I’m entertaining the audience,” Kuiper noted. “He has a big personality, and my job is to make it come out in each broadcast.”
After 30 acclaimed seasons of partnering at the mic, albeit with alternative planning, Kuiper remembers how it almost didn’t happen, because he simply didn’t want to journey west.
“When I got traded from Cleveland to San Francisco,” he said, “I asked the doctor if I failed the physical, then I don’t have to go. So I failed, but Tom Haller, the Giants general manager, said ‘We’ll take him anyway.’ I tried everything to make the trade not happen, and thank God I failed.”
Giants fans, and Mike Krukow, would agree.

Krukow and Kuiper have been broadcast partners for 30 years.

Selecting to ‘defer’ on the coin flip meant Cal’s defense would have to face the efficient Vandal offense which quickly jumped to a 17-point lead before Cal’s offense got hot and eventually scored two touchdowns before halftime. The Bears defense created fumbles and the offense capitalized on an interception and ran off 17 unanswered points for the 31-17 win. Who would have guessed the trio walking off the field during pregame -- Sam Jackson V (#5), Jeremiah Hunter (#3) and Trond Grizzell (#83) -- would all score touchdowns as the University of California Golden Bears hosted the Idaho University Vandals at Memorial Stadium, Berkeley, CA.

Tony Kemp is your 2023 nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One. We are proud to recognize Tony during a pregame presentation tonight, Sept. 15, as part of our
Roberto Clemente Day.
The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One is the annual recognition of a Major League player who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions both on and off the field. This is baseball's most prestigious individual honor for Major Leaguers.
This season, Kemp has once again teamed up with Players for the Planet and One Tree Planted to serve as a player ambassador to further the organizations’ mission to plant trees in urban communities. Kemp has pledged to plant 100 trees in urban communities for every stolen base and extra base hit he records throughout the season. To culminate the season-long initiative, Kemp will participate in a community tree planting event later this month.
Kemp also committed to supporting HCP Cureblindness, a nonprofit working to eradicate preventable and curable blindness throughout under-resourced communities worldwide. For each walk Kemp records this season, he will donate $100 to HCP Cureblindness, helping to empower their work worldwide.
Show your support and appreciation for Tony by voting today! Voting for the Roberto Clemente Award closes Sunday, Oct. 1.

Winning losers. Losing winners.
Baseball is so much about stats. 100-game winning seasons are not rare, but the 100-win threshold remains the hallmark of the best teams in a given season.
Wikipedia provides a list of 100 regular-season game winners and how they performed in the post season. Wikipedia does not have a list for 100 regular-season game losing teams but says they would post one if someone wanted to put one together.
That's the info I learned before giving up on a question based on 100 wins or losses. It's looking like we could have as many as three 100 game-winners this year and there is a chance we could have three 100 game-losers.
What's the question? What was the losingest team to ever win a World Series? Big hint: The year they did it, they were the National League Central champions.

The Love of Money is the Root of All Evil…and Apparently the raison d’etre for Sports Broadcasting
by Howard Pearlstein
Starting with Thursday Night Football, which is nothing but greed that grows like a cancer wanting more, more – more viewers, more money, more injuries – shorter recovery time for players. And Amazon Prime has an exclusive for Thursday Night Football, continuing its neverending juggernaut path to selling everything in the world.
First the NBA.
The NBA’s Board of Governors had made it clear: “Let’s stop f—king around – WE own the game and the game is TV money, and people want to see the stars play, so f---k the health and careers of the older players – no games off for resting the stars. And we’ll decide what 'stars' means.”
Given that 82 games in a season is too many, the health and careers of players need protection, resting them as needed, especially from scheduled back-to-back games. Not any more, unless the team applies for an exception a week in advance. Forget helping the stars extend their season to help the team win it all and justify their pay in the playoffs -- also the biggest TV audiences. People want to see the stars. But if they can’t get rested during the regular season, then, Oh No -- hoist on their own greedy petard, the Board of Governors are.
They’ve cleverly timed this announcement to disappear as attention is on impending MLB playoffs and the start of the NFL season.
And the NFL.
It’s no surprise in the NFL which choice gets made between player safety and owner’s money. Thursday Night football is an example. So is the field, as we know from seeing Aaron Rodgers’ Bright Lights Big City adventure end abruptly at Met Life.
The debate BETWEEN grass and pretend-grass is moot. Injury comparison statistics are simplified, generalized, manipulated, corrupted -- good only for PR flack.
It doesn’t matter WHICH field cover as much as the need for the same surface on all NFL fields, a league-wide standard to reduce ankle and leg injuries. If the NFL wants to limit the number of injuries, have the same field cover on all practice and playing surfaces. Because when the ground beneath your feet is changing from game to game, and you’re running or catching a pass or throwing a pass or dodging tacklers, the opportunity for a really bad season-ending step is increased. Consistency. And grass is the simplest way to do that. A lot of owners don’t like grass because upkeep can be costly, but not nearly as much as your $50 million dollar quarterback out for the season.
NBA players have the advantage there -- the hardwood courts are all the same, so muscle memory for balancing doesn’t have to change with every location. On the other hand, they have a bunch of signifying monkeys called the Board of Governors telling them – the coaches, the trainers, the players – when players should be allowed to rest and sit out a game according to the dim-witted self-defeating plan they dreamed up to increase tv audience shares.
Meanwhile, some local news connected to both NFL/NBA.
There’s a new real-deal Babyface Killer in Bay Area sports – Brock Purdy.
It’s time.
Former title-holder Steph Curry is a fully grown man with a wife and children, who’s taken responsibility for a lot more, like the future of the city of Oakland – feeding and educating Oakland’s children, refurbishing the schools and playgrounds. Still the MVP, a different kind.
And Finally –
Go Niners – Put them between the Brock and the Hard Place.
* * *
Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.
An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

Raye "ZAP" Hollitt -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee
In 1995 several of the star athletes from the TV show American Gladiators went on tour to overseas military bases to visit the troops. I was stationed at Yokota Air Base, Japan when they visited and had a chance to meet with Raye Hollitt, also known as Zap. She was one of the original American Gladiators from the TV series. When meeting with her she was super friendly and more than happy to meet and chat with the many service members that came out to meet her. She signed this photo for me 28 years ago and it’s a keeper.

MATCH RECAP: Earthquakes 2, Real Salt Lake 1
San Jose victorious at home, earn vital three points
in playoff push
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes defeated Real Salt Lake
2-1 in a critical match on Saturday night at PayPal Park. Jeremy Ebobisse scored the club’s fastest goal of the season and Rodrigues doubled the lead as the Quakes earned a crucial win in their playoff push. Cristian Espinoza continued his MVP form with assists on both goals.
The Quakes opened the scoring in just the second minute of the match from Ebobisse, who scored the quickest goal of his career. A perfectly-timed through ball from Espinoza connected with Ebobisse and he slotted a right-footed shot into the bottom corner of the net.
San Jose would double their lead in the 15th minute from Rodrigues, who successfully redirected a cross from Espinoza to score his first career MLS goal.

Roots Battle in Second Half, but Fall
to FC Tulsa 1-0
Oakland looked dominant for large portions of the match late in the game, but couldn’t overcome an early deficit as Roots fell to visiting FC Tulsa 1-0 at Pioneer Stadium in the East Bay on Saturday night.
Tulsa looked to control the pace of the game in the early going. They played keepaway from Oakland while simultaneously pushing the ball into Roots territory.
Ten minutes into the match this effort paid dividends when Tulsa forward Phil Goodrum found space in the Oakland penalty area and finished an acrobatic header to give the visiting team a 1-0 lead.
Tulsa continued to look strong through much of the first frame, but a save by Roots keeper Paul Blanchetter on a breakaway chance, and an immediate save on the follow up rebound try, gave Oakland a spark.
Coach Noah Delagado had to make an early substitution and adjust his system when Captain Tarek Morad went down with a head injury 20 minutes into the game. Tryavone Reid replaced the defender, offering Oakland a different attacking approach.
The pace of play slowed in the first-half heat as Oakland Roots lost some control but managed to maintain their 1-0 advantage heading into halftime against Las Vegas.

Bears Score 31 Unanswered Points In Win
Over Idaho
Cal Holds Vandals Scoreless For Final 39 Minutes
BERKELEY – The California football team used a second-quarter surge to take control of Saturday's game against Idaho and shut out the Vandals for the final 39 minutes in a 31-17 win at California Memorial Stadium.
Quarterback Sam Jackson V contributed to three touchdowns – two through the air and one on the ground – while running back Isaiah Ifanse rushed for 137 rushing yards on 22 carries. Defensively, the Golden Bears (2-1) forced three turnovers.
In the final minutes of the opening half, Jackson dropped in a couple of perfect throws to the end zone of 20 yards to Jeremiah Hunter and 36 yards to Trond Grizzell. That started a run of 31 unanswered points, as Cal scored on five of seven possessions.
"Momentum is a huge part of this game. You can feel it in the stadium," Travers Family Head Coach Justin Wilcox said. "We work real hard in terms of emphasizing the last four minutes of the first half and the first four minutes of the second half. You can really change the momentum in those eight minutes. That'll be a positive we talk about when we watch the tape."

WSOC | Unbeaten Streak Up to Six with Draw
at Santa Barbara
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Gaels extend their unbeaten streak to six games with a scoreless tie in Santa Barbara on Sunday afternoon.
SMC (6-2-2) applied pressure to UCSB (2-3-5) staying in the Gauchos territory for the majority of the half. The Gaels out shot the Gauchos 4-1, with both Savannah Schwarze and Micaela Romo's shots getting blocked in the first 25 minutes. Late in the first half with back to back attempts, Emma Barthel and Briana Salvetti both shot to the bottom right of the net after corner kicks and were denied on solid stops by the Gauchos keeper.
The Gaels remained in attack mode against the Gauchos in the second half and continued to outshoot UCSB 10-5. In the 49th minute Schwarze from right outside of the box, took a shot where it took a bounce right in front of the keeper. Quickly after, the Gaels had a dynamic play causing the Gauchos to bring more players deeper into the box to help their keeper, when SMC switched the ball from the far wing to the near wing around the 18 yard mark where Alessandra Towle attempted to take a shot. In the 66th minute, Emily Jensen received a pass from Barthel where Jensen shot it from well outside the box as it lands into the keeper's hands.

Volleyball Wraps Up Road Trip at Duke
DURHAM, N.C. — A long road trip all the way across the country came to an end Saturday for the Santa Clara University volleyball team, with the Broncos falling, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-13), to host
Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broncos (8-4) ran into a red-hot Duke (9-2) team Saturday. The Blue Devils continued their run as one of the hottest teams in the country, winning their ninth match in a row, including staying undefeated (5-0) at home. They hit .480 in the match and only got better as the night went on, hitting .425, .464 and .563 in sets one, two and three, respectively.
Sophia Tulino stayed hot, too. She had double-digit kills (10) for the third time in as many matches on the road trip. She posted the second-best hitting percentage of her career (minimum 10 kills) at .529, something she previously did on Thursday when she hit .462 at NC Central.

“Rolex Big Boat Series is a fantastic opportunity for the West Coast sailing community to end the summer sailing season on a high note. There is no better place to do it than on San Francisco Bay,” said Beau Vrolyk, St. Francis Yacht Club’s 2023 Commodore, and the owner/skipper of the classic Alden schooner Mayan. “StFYC is proud to support the high level of competition that this regatta draws, with world-class race management and great parties when we all return to the docks.”

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and
