North Country Fishing Report

Labor Day Weekend!

America's annual workers' holiday on the first Monday in September.

The first Labor Day was organized by the Central Labor Union of New York in 1882.

A three-day weekend often celebrating the end of summer with parties, beaches and barbeques.

This week, more of Jim Ure's "Fly Fishing for Sales".

Fall in the North Country!  My favorite!

Yes, life is good!

Guide Notes:

Tricos

Tricorythodes Minutus

Seasons:

  • Henry's Fork - Jul 15 - Oct 10
  • Yellowstone:
  • Hebgen Lake - Jun 30 - Sep 10
  • Silver Creek, Idaho - Jul 20 - Aug 15

Habitat:

Live in silty, weedy, slower sections

Nymphs:

  • Small Stout Crawler
  • Three Tails, Dark Olive/Brown
  • Not important stage to fisherman

Emergers:

  • Males emerge at night
  • Females emerge early to late morning

Duns:

  • Clear unmarked wings, three tails, no hind wings
  • Males - Dark brown bodies
  • Females - Olive abdomen and dark brown thorax
  • Duns remain on the water a long time while drying and extending wings

Spinners:

Males form mating swarms mid morning, along the margins and over riffles. The darker males mate and fall spent to the water, females lay eggs and fall as spinners an hour later.

Size:

#18-22

Presentation:

Dead drift

Quartering down and across

Time:

10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. (Civilized)

Place:

WR #16, and "The Lower Ranch" especially silty/muddy bottoms

Strategy:

  • Female emergers are probably the most important form during cold and wet weather.
  • Start with a female emerger, and then switch to male spinners, and later female spinners.
  • If it is windy the female spinner fall may occur in the evening, or wind protected areas. Try working areas downstream of these areas.
  • Work individual trout rather than casting to groups, study the riseform and feeding rhythm.
  • Use light and long tippets and a reach cast upstream or downstream for drag free drift with bug reaching the fish before your leader.
  • Patterns with a post or upright wing are easier to see so make a good lead fly with a flush floating dropper
  • Males emerge at night so check back eddies and other collecting areas first thing for scum suckers.

Patterns:

  • CDC Trico Emerger
  • CDC Sparkle Dun
  • Trico Parachute
  • CDC Male Spinner
  • Poly Wing Spinner
