Superintendent's Message
A Message from Superintendent Layton
We have enjoyed watching the football and volleyball games! The homecoming game is next week, and we are looking forward to the festivities.

I was able to see students dressed up for career day at Tool! We will be in good hands when those kids grow up!

The first grading period has flown by, our teachers and students are doing an excellent job. As we move into the next grading period, we all need to remember to wear a mask and practice social distancing. If any of us are feeling sick, please stay home.

We also must not forget that we are lucky to be playing sports in Texas. We must continue the practices of wearing a mask and social distancing at athletic events. We want to continue to watch our Tigers and Lady Tigers play. Let's all do our part so we can continue to have athletic contests.

The maintenance and custodial departments are due for a shout out this week. All of you are doing an incredible job of cleaning our schools so we can have class. During this time of COVID, I can't thank you enough for taking care of our schools, students, and staff.

It is always a great day to be a Tiger!
Extended Early Release

We hope all of our families are doing well, please know we as a learning organization understand the importance of working together with our families to provide for the needs of our students, particularly during these unprecedented days of COVID-19. Since the start of the 2020-2021 school year the district has adopted an early release schedule to allow teachers additional planning time to address face-to-face and online learning.

MISD will extend the early release schedule beginning Monday, September 21 and continue through October 16th, 2020.

A parent survey was sent to families on Tuesday, September 15, 2020. The survey results indicated there were concerns about the impact of an early release schedule on our working parents.

In an effort to address these concerns, campuses will provide extended care from 1:30-3:15 PM for students whose working parents are impacted by the early release schedule. The extended care hours will be provided by campus personnel through the duration of the early release schedule. Each campus administration will communicate with parents who wish to have their child(ren) participate in extended care hours.

IMPORTANT: The district will not be running additional bus routes for extended care hours, therefore parents must make arrangements for their student(s) to be picked-up by 3:15 PM at their child’s campus if they wish to have their child participate in extended care hours. There can be no exceptions to this requirement.

We consider it a great privilege to serve our families and hope everyone remains healthy and safe.

Board Member Jerry Spiva shared this idea with us. What a great way for the employees of MISD to receive the thanks they deserve!
Malakoff High School
Flexibility
On the athletic front, our students are competing in volleyball, cross country, and football. We have been very fortunate that we have the opportunity to compete in these times of COVID-19. To help minimize the spread of COVID, the UIL requires spectators to wear masks. If you are experiencing any symptoms or do not feel well, please make the safe choice of not attending a school event.

The plan for school moving forward is to continue the transitional schedule for a little while longer. This allows us to get better at lesson delivery for our remote learners. An offering to help all learners is an initiative out of Texas A&M, the Aggie Homework Helpline (AHH) is an initiative to help provide quality, free online tutoring to PK-12 learners and families. We always remind our students that they are the author of their book. To get to that "happy ending", it will take discipline, determination, goals, and a positive mindset. Sometimes you will fail or make a mistake but Keep Trying!!
