Text: Psalm 131; Psalm 116:7

Noise cancellation for the soul __________________

“O Lord, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty;
Nor do I involve myself in great matters, or in things too difficult for me.
Surely I have composed and quieted my soul;
Like a weaned child rests against his mother,
My soul is like a weaned child within me.
O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forever.”
Psalm 131  NASB

1.   Who I am (v. 1)
-         Isaiah 40:6-8; James 4:6; James 4:14
-         Self-reflective practice of the soul is difficult. Accurate __________
is critical to accurate __________.
-         Pride exaggerates my __________ and minimizes my ___________

2.   What I do (v. 2)
-         Too much ______________ and too much ______________ can be toxic
to the soul.
-         Solitude is not as much about place as it is ____________

3.   Conclusion (v. 3)
-         When we have a proper sense of ourselves and quiet our souls in God’s strong,
comforting presence, we can hope in Him.
-         1 Corinthians 13:12-13

Use the following game plan with your family, LifeGroup, or personal study this week. Allow this game plan to stimulate conversations with each other and with God.

Game Plan This Week:

1st Down:
- Review the sermon
o What were the main points?
o What points were most meaningful to you?

2nd Down:
- Study/discuss the text
o Psalm 131; 116:7
o “We who have been drugged by diversions cannot expect to enter the quiet
without a struggle. Our souls will roar for diversions.” - Gary Thomas
 Agree or disagree? Have you experienced this struggle and roars for
diversions?
o James 4:6; James 4:14
 What makes having a proper perspective of ourselves so difficult?
 What is the difference between having a place of solitude versus
making space for solitude?

3rd Down:
- Break into smaller groups and discuss these questions and pray for each other:
o What “great matters” occupy way too much of our time?
o What are some practical ways we can set them aside and make space for
God? Why wouldn’t we do these things?
o What can we do to overcome these challenges?
- Pray for each other:
o Share with your group how you would have them pray for your soul? (For
discipline to make space for solitude with God, humility, etc)
o Share other needs in your life right now (employment, finances,
relationships, family, health, etc.)

4th Down:
- This week make a commitment to sit down often with God and discuss the
health of your soul.
o Ask God to strengthen, embolden, heal, and refresh your soul.
o Ask God to point out pride, haughtiness, busyness, etc.

What’s Happening

Communion: We will observe the Lord's supper on Sept 20th.

SOGCOG: Students of Grace has started a new teaching series called "Just Asking for a Friend". Pastor J will be leading our youth through some of the difficult questions you or a friend might be asking in the back of your mind. This will be a great opportunity to strengthen your faith and even open the door to invite your friends as we discuss what the Bible says about these challenging topics. Topics will include:
9/9 - How can a loving God send people to hell?
9/16 - Why did God make me like this?
9/23 - Why doesn't God answer my prayers?
If you would like more information, contact Pastor J.

Women's Bible Study: We will meet via Zoom from 7-8:15 pm, beginning Thur, Sep 17th. "Learning to be Jesus' Disciple" is the new study. For all women age 16 and up. For more information please contact Carol Bryan at 303-522-2293.

Sunday Prayer Time: The COG prayer team is gathering outside, in the parking lot, weather permitting, at COG each Sunday at 9:15 am - 9:45 am to pray before worship service. Please bring your own chair. You can email Kathleen Chandler if you have any questions.
