APPLICATIONS FOR RESEARCH AWARDS DUE OCTOBER 1
|
Don't miss the application deadline for the Hohn-Johnson Research Award and the Wade O. Brinker Resident Research Award.
Applications for the Hohn-Johnson Research Award ($40,000) and the Wade O. Brinker Resident Research Award ($12,000) are due on October 1, 2014. Applications are accepted from those in private practice and academia alike, and offer an excellent opportunity to secure funding for novel, high-quality research. VOS also presents one or more Mark S. Bloomberg Memorial Research Awards each year to residents submitting abstracts for presentation at the VOS Annual Conference. The awards allow the recipients to travel to the meeting to present their work.Qualified resident abstracts are chosen based on predetermined criteria by a panel of judges. The award(s) are given to help offset the cost of attending the conference to present their research. Awards are provided by the generous funding of the sponsors and are limited. In 2014, the Bloomberg Memorial Resident Research Awards were sponsored by generous donations from IMEX Veterinary Inc. and Kyon and endowed sponsors AOVET North America, Merial, New Generation Devices, Securos, Orthomed and VOS Past Presidents. Each year, up to seven resident abstracts are chosen for this award.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS FOR 2015 CONFERENCE
|
VOS invites practitioners, academicians, and researchers interested in large animal, small animal, and exotic species to submit abstracts of novel studies in practical and scientific topics related to veterinary orthopedics and traumatology. Abstracts will be presented at the 42nd annual Veterinary Orthopedic Society conference, February 28 to March 7, 2015.
Preference will be given to abstracts that have clinical relevance. Papers addressing results of controlled retrospective and prospective clinical studies are strongly encouraged. Clinician investigators should also consider submitting innovative surgical techniques, or case (series) reports describing unusual or difficult cases as these will be reviewed separate from the scientific abstracts and incorporated into the annual meeting. Presentations will be limited to 10 minutes and followed by 5 minutes of discussion.
In addition to the typical scientific abstract sessions, the 2015 VOS will feature a session dedicated to "Complications and Corrections." The goal of the session is to discuss cases with challenging complications, revision planning, execution and outcome. The intention is to learn from each other's missteps and/or mistakes, following the old surgical adage: "Good surgical judgement comes from experience, experience comes from poor surgical judgement." The best case submissions will be selected to be presented on the podium during this special session.
The deadline for ALL new submissions is Saturday, November 1, 2014.
For more information, please see the Call for Abstracts page on the VOS website.

SPOTLIGHT ON ... ORTHOMED
|
Orthomed is proud to work alongside the VOS and support the Mark Bloomberg Research Award. As one of the leading veterinary orthopaedic supplier specialists, we understand the importance of supporting the talent and dedication of residents who are coming into the veterinary industry and how vital it is to encourage and assist them with their desire to add real benefit, value and technical input. The fact that our donation elevates any financial barriers which prevents residents from presenting their work and findings to their peers is something we are very proud to be a part of. Supporting residents in training is very important to us and we're delighted to be a part of this program.
Orthomed was founded with the vision of providing the veterinary industry with innovative, high quality orthopaedic implants and instruments supported with world class education, combined with offering the highest standards in technical support, customer service, training and product information. We have a reputation for developing and manufacturing some of the industry's leading orthopaedic products such as the MMP Wedge for TTA, the SOP™ locking plate system, our PCA plates and our new RidgeStop™ implant for patella luxation. SPOTLIGHT ON ... PAST PRESIDENTS' ENDOWMENT
|
Improving the quality of care to animals with orthopedic injury by advancing and sharing scientific evidence in a collegial forum is a major goal of the VOS. The VOS believes it is imperative to the future of our profession to provide opportunities for surgical residents to have this experience. The Veterinary Orthopedic Educational Foundation embraces this mission by providing travel scholarships for residents that have contributed to the scientific advancement of our profession and been chosen through a peer-reviewed process to present their findings at the annual VOS conference.
Dr. Mark Bloomberg, a VOS past president, believed resident training was of paramount importance. He committed much of his personal and professional life to ensure residents had a positive research experience during their training. One of Mark's joys in life was bringing residents to VOS to share their research with others and to learn from their peers. Mark encouraged his peers to do the same. The Past Presidents' Endowment of a Mark Bloomberg Resident Research Award honors the commitment of Dr. Mark Bloomberg and the members of the VOS to surgery resident research.
