Happy Fall!

As daylight hours start to dwindle on our drive home, we turn our thoughts to fall and all the hustle and bustle that it brings. We on the VOS board have started the planning process for our 2017 conference, held in Snowbird, Utah. First order of business is to get abstracts submitted and sponsors lined up. The abstract submission link can be found on the VOS website, and it will close November 1st, 2016 (unless you are a procrastinator; then you should mark your calendar for October 15th). Sponsorship was at an all-time high last year, and we expect nothing short of the same this time around. If you know any interested potential sponsor, they should contact Janet Van Dyke immediately (

In the meanwhile, we will convene as a board during the annual ACVS conference, held this year in Seattle, Washington. Any pressing topics or ideas you have should be emailed to Rich Evans ( As I did last year, I would like to give a shout out to all the VOS members speaking at this year's ACVS conference ( see a full list below). Thank you for your continued commitment to our field.

44th Annual Veterinary Orthopedic Society Conference
March 11-18, 2017 at Snowbird, Utah
by Reunan Guillou and José Garcia-Lopez
VOS Scientific Program Chair and Assistant Scientific Program Chair

We invite practitioners, academicians, and researchers interested in large animal, small animal, and exotic species to submit abstracts of novel studies in practical and scientific topics related to veterinary orthopedics and traumatology. Preference will be given to abstracts that have clinical relevance. Papers addressing results of controlled retrospective and prospective clinical studies are strongly encouraged. Clinician investigators should also consider submitting innovative surgical techniques, or case reports describing unusual or difficult cases as these will be reviewed separate from the scientific abstracts. Presentations will be limited to 10 minutes and followed by 5 minutes of discussion. Posters must fit within the 4' (height) x 4' (width) area provided.

The call for papers is now open and will close on November 1st, 2016 for both podium presentations and posters. Visit the Abstract Submission page on our website for complete instructions about submitting an abstract.

Submission categories are:
  • Clinical/Scientific Studies

  • Case reports: a maximum of three novel or interesting cases
The Mark S. Bloomberg Memorial Resident Research Award was established to recognize outstanding resident abstract submissions to the scientific program. At least one recipient per year will be awarded up to $1,500.00 towards expenses to attend and present their abstract at our annual meeting. Only individuals currently in a residency training program or within 2 years of completion of a formal residency program are eligible. The abstract submission may only be of studies conducted during the residency program. All abstracts being submitted for consideration of this award must indicate so on online submission form.

Dr. Susan Stover Hearty congratulations to VOS member Dr. Susan Stover, who was recently selected for induction in the Equine Research Hall of Fame, located in the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

Dr. Stover, a professor at University of California, Davis, also received the 2016 Hohn-Johnson Research Award from VOS earlier this year.

According to an article in HorsetalkNZ, "As director of the school's J.D. Wheat Veterinary Orthopedic Research Laboratory, Stover is described as having had a transformative effect on the understanding of the pathophysiology of catastrophic musculoskeletal injury in performance horses, and is known for charting new and sustained improvements in the welfare of these horses and the practice of veterinary medicine."

The article continues: "This prestigious award honors scientists who, through many years of research, have contributed significantly to the field of equine veterinary science. The Hall of Fame was established to honor individuals who have dedicated their careers to expanding the body of knowledge of equine science through their contributions to basic or applied research. The award is a tribute to renowned scientists from around the world and serves as an international forum for honoring top achievements in equine health research."
