"Bringing Back Play" in Cumberland County

The Municipality discusses ways to engage children in physical activities by
Bringing Back Play
Over the past few years the recreation staff in Cumberland County have been putting a lot of energy and focus into "bringing back play".  With a very high level of obesity in Nova Scotia and Canada's very low score on ParticipACTION's annual report card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth, we have our work cut out for us.  Traditional methods of offering more programs do not seem to be having the effects we all hope for, so in addition to supporting those local programs we are also attempting to approach children through old school play.

Councillors' Corner
Deputy Warden Fletcher would like to congratulate Peter & Pat Spicer of Spencer's Island for recognized as the 2017 Provincial and Central Region Woodlot Owner of the Year!

The Spicers manage a 1600-acre woodlot that has been in the family for 7 generations. This unique woodlot was the main supplier of high quality ship building wood products to the shipbuilding industry that once existed in Spencer's Island, and continues to provide both social and economic values for the Spicers and the community. About 14 years ago Peter took over the woodlot after retiring from his teaching career and started managing it as a business known as: Seven Gulches Forest Products; and it has been an incredible journey for Peter and his family.

The Spicers will receive their award at this year's Spencer's Island Field Day taking place on Saturday, September 30th, 2017. All are invited!

Nova Scotia Pineapple Awards
The Nova Scotia Pineapple Awards are a Celebration of our Pride in Service and a recognition of the individuals who go above and beyond what is expected to enrich a visitor's stay in Nova Scotia.
Any service provider (a guide, driver, host, salesperson, police officer, etc.) who exceeded service expectations of our guests.
Were you "wowed" while visiting Nova Scotia? It could be that you asked your accommodation host for directions and ended up with a personally guided tour. Or a retail person tracked down the outfit you just had to have in your size and favourite colour. Maybe you have a co-worker who consistently shows exemplary service skills to internal and external customers. We want to know the story! Nominate that person for a Pineapple Award and celebrate their dedication to exceeding your expectations.
The awards are given at the annual "Crystal Tourism Awards of Excellence" Gala Dinner hosted by TIANS at the Tourism Summit, the Tourism Event of the Year.
