2018 Picker Gold Grants to fund projects on resident communication skills and culturally competent care
The Gold Foundation is
delighted to announce two exceptional projects selected to receive the 2018 Picker Gold Graduate Medical Education Challenge Grants. Paul Haidet, MD, MPH, of Penn State College, will be developing and evaluating a system-based intervention to foster deliberate practice of communication skills among residency trainees. Cheryl T. Lee, MD, and Tasha Posid, PhD, of The Ohio State University will be developing and evaluating a cross-cultural intervention for urology residents to better understand patient attitudes and perceptions and to improve empathic communication.

Libertas Center offers rare, comprehensive care to torture survivors
Dr. Dinali Fernando, the Gold Foundation's 2018 Pearl Birnbaum Hurwitz Humanism in Healthcare Award winner, is the Medical Director of the Libertas Center for Human Rights at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, New York. She has led it from a completely volunteer program to a comprehensive, torture-survivor treatment center that advocates nationally for this underserved population.

The Gold Foundation is heading to Texas for the Association of American Medical Colleges' annual Learn Serve Lead meeting. During the conference, the Gold Foundation will be
hosting a number of events, including a special Gold Humanism Honor Society workshop and the Jordan J. Cohen Humanism in Medicine Thought Leadership Session, given this year by George Thibault, Gold Board member and immediate past President of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation. Dr. Thibault will be speaking on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 1:30 p.m. in convention center room 18 on "Humanism in Medicine: What Does it Mean and Why is it More Important than Ever?"

September's Research Roundup features 10 new publications
The
September edition of the Jeffrey Silver Humanism in Healthcare Research Roundup features 10 recently published studies around humanism, including one by 2016 Gold Student Summer Fellow Jiby Mepurathu Yohannan of Augusta University that assessed a LGBT community's health needs, as well as a study on digital storytelling in health professions education by a Mapping the Landscape team from University of Ottawa.
