Superintendent's Message: Ohio School Report Card Released
The State Report Cards were released late last week on all 608 Ohio School Districts. Congratulations to the BCLSD for a job well done!

Below is a chart breaking down the distribution of letter grades for school districts across Ohio:

“A” – 28 school districts
“B” – 191 school districts (includes the BCLSD)
“C” – 253 school districts
“D” – 122 school districts
“F” – 14 school districts

Unfortunately, Ohio’s current report card system does not accurately reflect all the good things being done in the BCLSD and all the other districts across the state. For the most part, the report card is a snapshot of how students test on one particular day. However, there is important data included in the report that we can use to help with planning and instructional adjustments, as necessary.

Again, congratulations to our students and staff!

Video: "Behind the Scenes ~ The BC Support Staff"
We want to take the time to share with you how valuable our support staff members are to our school district. Our support staff members play an important role in ensuring students are learning in a safe and supportive environment, and include a variety of individuals working together to provide several important and specialized services.

Too often, their work is underappreciated and unnoticed. We want our community to understand the appreciation we have for our support staff and the critical role they play in providing the best educational experience possible for our students and instructional staff.

We hope you take a moment to view this video highlighting the behind the scenes look at the BCLSD support staff. Click here to view video.
National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist Announced
Bloom-Carroll High School is proud to announce that Senior Matt Stoner has been named National Merit Scholar semifinalist. This national distinction places him in the top one percent of high school seniors in the U.S.

The National Merit Scholarship Program recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability based on their performance on the PSAT taken during the junior year. About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered this year's National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) as the first screen of program entrants.

Matt is a part of 16,000 national semifinalists who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 scholarships worth $33 million that will be offered next spring. In February, around 15,000 Semifinalists in the nation are notified that they have advanced to Finalist standing. Finalist are chosen based on semifinalist's academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment and honors and awards received.

Bloom-Carroll Schools is committed to providing the advanced, rigorous coursework and highly skilled teachers, students need to earn this recognition. Congratulations to Matt and his family on this tremendous accomplishment.
Invention Convention National Finalist
Every year students at Bloom-Carroll Middle School participate in the Invention Convention Program.  The Invention Convention event provides a live, in-person opportunity for youth inventors and entrepreneurs in grades 3-12 to display their critical thinking skills through inventing, innovating, and entrepreneurial activities.

Two students from BCMS, Jordyn Adams and Danielle Jackson, recently won first place in the Ohio State Invention Convention for their 7th grade invention titled “Sight for Safety.” Their invention is a device that helps drivers be more aware of potential risks involved with driving. They have been invited to participate in the National Invention Convention in May of 2019! Congratulations to these students and the many other students who participated in this event!
#WhatLiftsYou Art Project at BCIS
During the first week of school, Mrs. Sony kicked off art class at BCIS looking at the work of street artist Kelsey Montague. Montague does the interactive wing murals all over the country to promote positivity in the world through social media. #whatliftsyou

Each student in Mrs. Sony's class created a feather of their own design and wrote something on the back of the feather that inspired them (school subject, sport, person, etc.) The BCIS wing mural is one display in the hallway at the intermediate. During this project, the students were able to witness a real world street artist in Lithopolis painting a building for the local Honeyfest event. The students were excited about the real world connection. Such a fun project to kick off the year!!!
Character Education Assembly with Jim Basketball Jones
Kindness is so important in our schools today. Jim Basketball Jones once again delivered a powerful message to our K-4 students on ways they can help spread kindness in our schools by doing something.

Knowing what it takes to be kind is great, but when we apply kindness and take action - then we truly make a difference in our lives and the ones around us.

To be the best versions of ourselves we have to take responsibility for our effort and for the choices that we make. "Good Choice, Bad Choice, My Choice", our character is a reflection of our choices and this assembly teaches students to "Do the right thing, the right time, the right way."

September is Attendance Month
With the new school year underway across Ohio, it’s more important than ever that our students be in class every day ready to learn. Missing too much school has long-term, negative effects on students, such as lower achievement and graduation rates. A student is chronically absent if he or she misses as few as two days of school a month. September is Attendance Awareness Month across the country and in Ohio.

Parents can find strategies for building the habit of good attendance on the  Attendance Works website .
