Two 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients named:
William O. McCoy '55
Mikal J. Phillips '97
by Steven P. Fish '85, Awards Committee Chair
The Distinguished Alumnus Award is provided to recognize a graduate of the UNC NROTC program who has distinguished himself or herself in contributions to our Nation, the armed services, industry or business, the arts, philanthropy, or other social contributions. T wo outstanding recipients were selected this year, one for distinguished service in business and academia and the other for distinguished service on active duty in the fleet. The awards will be presented at the Annual Meeting on 3 November 2018
William O. McCoy, Class of 1955 , served as a USMC helicopter pilot after graduation and commissioning. Upon leaving the service, he established himself as a leader in the telecommunications industry and in several positions of leadership at the University of North Carolina. During the course of his career, he served as:
  • Chancellor of UNC Chapel Hill (interim) 1999-2000.
  • Vice President of Finance for the UNC system
  • Chairman, UNC National Development Council
  • UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, Board of Visitors
  • Director of UNC Health Care System
  • CFO and Vice-Chairman of BellSouth Corporation
  • President of BellSouth Enterprises
  • Trustee of Fidelity Investments in Boston and North Carolina Management Trust
  • Member of the Board of Directors for Progress Energy, Liberty Corporation, First American Corporation and Research Triangle Park Foundation

Chancellor McCoy is retired and resides in Chapel Hill.
Captain Mikal J. Phillips, USN, Class of 1997, is a qualified Surface Warfare Officer. He was serving as a Division Officer (Fire Control Officer) aboard USS Cole (DDG 67) and was instrumental is in saving the ship and numerous crew members following the attack by al Qaeda in the port of Aden, Yemen on October 12, 2000. Specifically, he:
  • led injured crewmen topside for triage and then organized rescue and damage control teams, helping re-establish command and control quickly during a chaotic and evolving combat situation.
  • took charge and led a team in personnel injury assessment and evacuation efforts. He saw that Miller Board stretchers were ineffective and harmful and quickly instituted the use of Stokes litters for evacuation, facilitating timely and lifesaving efforts to get injured crewmen off the ship to local hospitals.
  • led a damage control and dewatering team into Main Engine Room Number 2, flooding with seawater from a damaged shaft seal and jet fuel from ruptured fuel tanks. His team used the damage control methods from their training to stop the leaking shaft seal and preventing further flooding and possible sinking of the Cole.
Captain Phillips went on to serve as Commanding Officer of USS Mason (DDG 87), and was a finalist for the Admiral Stockdale leadership Award. He currently serves in the J7 Directorate (Joint Force Development) on the Joint Staff (South) in Suffolk, VA.

Bringing back a feature from years ago:
"Whispers & Gossip" is now retitled
"Now hear this: SCUTTLEBUTT!"
With your help, the Member Communications Committee will bring back the former "Whispers & Gossip" feature from past year Newsletters (circa 2000-2008) in future News Bulletins with the more naval title of "Now hear this: SCUTTLEBUTT!" This is an opportunity for members to update their classmates on significant events going on in their lives, their family, careers, etc. Send us your announcements. We reserve the right to edit in the interest of good taste but will attempt to accommodate all member's input.

Likewise we will publish member obituaries as they become known. If you know of a UNC NROTC Alumnus who has passed away, let us know so that this information may be reported in the News Bulletin under "Taps".

Please send your announcements to secretary@uncnrotcaa.org .

The next News Bulletin expected to publish on Sunday, 21 October 2018. Deadline for input is Friday, 19 October 2018
