Meet the 2018 SPOTLIGHT! winners

Innovative solutions for operations challenges took center stage at the 2018
Spotlight! Team Project Showcase and Scholarship Competition, September 14 at the Ann Arbor Sheraton. Initial sponsoring company calculations indicate the 2018 Tauber team projects resulted in $564.4 million in cost savings and additional revenue generation.

The judges awarded first place to Team Boeing 787, Yatri Patel (EGL BSE-ME & MSE-IOE) & Kartik Raju (MBA). Second Place was awarded to Team Boeing 777X, Andrew Davis (MBA), Colin McNally (MBA), & Cameron Stitt (EGL BSE-CHE & MSE-CHE). Third Place was awarded to Team PepsiCo, Steven Oranges (MBA) & Tom Walkinshaw (EGL BSE-ME & ME-ESE). Congratulations to the scholarship award winners, and to all the Tauber teams on their excellent presentations!

Joel Tauber donates $1.75M

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Tauber Institute, benefactor Joel Tauber presented the institute with a $1.75M gift to endow scholarships. "I wanted to build up our scholarships so that anyone needing money would have the opportunity to join the program," Tauber said. "This gift reflects both my high regard for the University of Michigan, and the great success of the program."

"I believe that big-picture system thinking, informed by rigorous analytics and Design Thinking principles, will re-shape the business ecosystems of the near future. Operations academics and practitioners are well-positioned to lead this coming revolution."

In conjunction with the Tauber Institute 25th anniversary celebrations, Tauber leaders honored the contributions of eleven dedicated faculty advisors who together have advised over 200 team projects. Eric Svaan of the Ross School of Business was honored for the longest commitment to the Tauber Institute's mission. Svaan has advised Tauber team projects for 23 years, including recent projects sponsored by 3M, BorgWarner, Kostal, Pfizer, and Spacelabs. Svann is especially proud of his record as an advisor for multiple award winning teams!
Five sponsors receive longevity awards

Five team project sponsors received longevity awards at 2018 Spotlight! recognizing their commitment to Tauber team project partnerships: Ford Motor Company (20 years), General Motors Company (20 years), Cummins Inc. (10 years), DowDuPont (10 years), and PepsiCo (5 years).
Alumni scholarships doubled!

Thanks to the generous response to the 25/25 Alumni Challenge, the Tauber Alumni Board was able to double the amount of the Alumni Scholarships awarded at Spotlight! Corinne Beemer (EGL BSE/MSE-IOE) and Kelsey Wyatt- Mair (MSE-IOE & MBA) each received a $5000 scholarship in recognition of their student leadership and involvement in institute activities.

Tauber MBA named McGowan fellow

Congratulations to Wendy Lei (MBA '19)! She received the prestigious McGowan Fellowship for 2018-2019. This elite program is sponsored by the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund, established to honor the late William G. McGowan, former CEO of MCI. Only ten students across the country are selected to receive the fellowship each year. Wendy just finished her 2018 Tauber team project for Amazon.

For their 2018 team project at Cummins Inc., Advait Bhogte (MENG-MFG), Makura Compton (MBA), and Dieon Roger (MSE-ME & MSE-SED)  worked closely with Engineering, Marketing, Quality, and Purchasing functions to optimize the continuity of supply for low volume, late lifecycle service parts through the application of additive manufacturing technologies.
