PRELIMINARY RESULTS FROM OUR SOFT BUT NOT NECESSARILY BITE-SIZED SURVEY
|
|
A HUGE thank you to everyone who participated in our recent survey – we received over 2000 responses!
You may recall that we sent this survey out in response to a number of requests looking for a label and testing methods for foods that are “soft” but not necessarily requiring a specific particle sized. This was to meet the needs of individuals who do not necessarily have dysphagia or increased choking risk but might benefit from softer choices. Many of the requests for this subcategory were coming from those working in elder care settings.
Results:
The overwhelming response was that “yes” there is a need for this subcategory of food to better meet the overall needs of all individuals in various care settings.
The most popular overall term was
“Easy to Chew”.
So, where do we go from here?
The IDDSI Board of Directors is now working with this information and will provide an update shortly on a label, descriptor and testing method. For those who are currently testing and mapping your menu items, please keep the term “Easy to Chew” in mind for those menu items that do not meet the Level 6 – Soft & Bite-Sized 15mm x 15 mm particle size but is considered “Easy to Chew” within Level 7 Regular.
Please note that there will NOT be any “new level” added to the existing framework.
