It's that time of year when rehearsals resume, committee meetings start up, emails increase, and overall there is just more stuff to do. In the midst of our busyness we sometimes lose focus on our main purpose - leading the church's song. But why should we work to carry on this tradition of singing in worship?
To start with, singing is a part of our faith history. The act of singing to God is recorded from a song of praise after Pharaoh's army was destroyed, to Jesus and his disciples singing a psalm at their Passover observance, to the New Testament "psalms, hymns and spiritual songs."
We sing because it connects us to the saints that have gone before us, the saints that will come after us, and the hosts of heaven worshiping with us. We never sing alone because we have the voices of the saints echoing from the past and resounding into the future, right alongside us in the present.
We sing to learn about our faith. We are blessed with hymnwriters who give us rich sermons through their hymnody and they continue to preach and evangelize when we sing their texts.
The most important reason we sing is that we have been given the breath of life from our Creator and in turn we use our breath to give back thanks and praise in worship. Our sung prayer allows us to become one voice which offers immortal praise to our Lord and Savior.
We are fortunate that ALCM nurtures and equips us in our work, with articles on hymns and hymnwriters, practical tips and resources, and hands-on training in workshops. All of these aid us in our most important work - leading the church's song. And for that I give thanks.
Soli Deo Gloria!
