Nexus Coffee Company announces plans to expand in north Durham!
|
Uxbridge’s modern coffee house, Nexus Coffee Company, recently announced that they will be opening a second location in Port Perry. Not only are they known for their wide selection of coffees and teas, but the company recently won the Bicycle Friendly Business Award by Ontario By Bike for being so cycle-friendly. The coffee house is looking for staff for their new store and are currently hiring.

Kendal Hills Farm utilizes regenerative agriculture to preserve farm
|
Emily and Dave of Kendal Hills Farm are committed to the principles of regenerative agriculture—a system of farming principles and practices that increases biodiversity, enriches soils, resilience to climate instability, improves watersheds, and enhances ecosystem services. Located outside of Orono, Kendal Hills Farm cultivates gourmet mushrooms, pasture-raised poultry and forest-raised pigs.

Celebrate Ontario Agriculture Week at the Fall Farmers Market on October 10
|
A Fall Farmers Market will be held on October 10 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
in the north parking lot at Region of Durham Headquarters, located at 605 Rossland Road East in Whitby. There will be an assortment of local produce, savoury snacks and value-added agricultural products available. Support local farms and businesses by visiting the farmers market and help celebrate Ontario Agriculture Week from October 7 to 13.

Celebrate local food in Uxbridge with exciting events this fall
|
Visit Uxbridge this fall and enjoy a celebration of local history, farmers, chefs and producers. A series of events will take place throughout September and October to recognize the importance of agriculture in the community including food festivals, farm tours, brewery tours, special restaurant menus, and ultimate foodie experiences.

Rural Economic Development (RED) program intake closes on September 9
|
The deadline to apply for the Rural Economic Development (RED) program is on September 9. The program aims to help rural and Indigenous communities attract investment, create jobs and boost economic development. This year, two new project categories were introduced: economic diversification and competitiveness and strategic economic infrastructure.

Durham Farm Connections agri-science education day takes place September 26
|
The 10
th
annual Durham Farm Connections agri-science education day will be held at Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School on September 26. The high school program is organized by Durham Farm Connections volunteers and supported by Durham Region’s Planning and Economic Development Department. Local high school students will learn about the many economic, environmental and educational opportunities the agriculture sector provides and will cover topics such as: soil and aquatic health, green energy, marketing and labelling for food products and GMOs.

Get your tickets! The Farm to Train fundraiser event takes place September 28
|
All Aboard Uxbridge will be hosting the annual Farm to Train 2019 fundraiser event to benefit Loaves and Fishes Food Bank. The event will be held on Saturday, September 28 from 4:30 to 10 p.m. and will feature a four-course, locally inspired meal by Urban Pantry Restaurant.

Savour the flavours of Durham Region and learn about local agriculture at Gates Open!
|
Durham Region Economic Development and Tourism and Durham Farm Fresh have teamed up to bring back Gates Open! This spectacular harvest celebration will showcase participating Durham Farm Fresh members and provide the public with an opportunity to experience a unique educational and experiential component that is not part of the host farms regular operations.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 5th and is free for visitors to attend.

Province launches 2019 Excellence in Agriculture Program
|
The 2019 Excellence in Agriculture program is now open to receive applications and includes a new category to recognize outstanding youth leaders in the agri-food sector. The program recognizes agri-food innovations that demonstrate leadership, product development or technology advancement that will benefit the agricultural sector. Applications can be submitted until October 11, 2019.

Durham Region hires Broadband Specialist
|
The Region of Durham’s Planning and Economic Development Department, Agriculture and Rural Affairs section recently hired a Broadband Specialist—Riaz Razvi, who will be delivering on the action items in Durham’s
Broadband Strategy
. The core duties of the Broadband Specialist include the immediate formation of a Broadband Working Group (BWG), to develop a workplan and work collaboratively to support local internet service providers (ISPs) by bringing high-speed internet to underserved areas.

High schools in rural Durham, including Brock, Uxbridge and Port Perry, offer students an opportunity to build career skills, learn about their interests and develop valuable relationships in their local communities through co-opertative (co-op) education programs. Students can be placed in a variety of employment sectors, such as agriculture, business, education and trades

Scugog launches new investment tool INscugog.ca
|
The Township of Scugog, in partnership with the Durham Region Economic Development and Tourism Division, has developed a new tool for investors looking to establish a business in Scugog. The module is an innovative web-based tool that provides site selection information and resources for investors looking for industrial and commercial investment opportunity. The guide targets investment in three key areas of the Township: The Business Park (Port Perry employment lands), Historic Downtown Port Perry, and the Commercial Centre (Smart Centre site).
