A note from the Idle No More SF Bay Area leaders
Dear Faith Friends,
Idle No More SF Bay (INM SF Bay) is inviting the Contra Costa Interfaith Council to join us for the Global Climate Strike from September 20-27 this year. We are out of time to ensure that future generations enjoy what we have enjoyed in our lifetimes - they won't.
Idle No More SF Bay is one of a handful of groups which has extensive experience in conducting nonviolent direct actions in the Bay Area. The initial co-sponsoring groups of the Bay Area Climate Strike include Diablo Rising Tide, 1000 Grandmothers for Future Generations, Extinction Rebellion SF Bay and The Society of Fearless Grandmothers. We are inviting you to join us to save as much of the world as we can.
It is time to raise the bar on our actions to force rapid policy change on climate that includes a just transition off of fossil fuels, as well as equity for frontline, environmental justice communities and African Americans, honoring Native American sovereignty and rights, and justice for migrants, many of whom are
fleeing their homes due to climate disruption. As Naomi Klein has said, "To change everything, we need everyone."
We are inviting organizations, faith groups, friends and family members to organize themselves in
affinity groups (AGs). There are two meetings of AGs before September 20th called Spokes Councils, one on August 31st and September 14th. AGs have been
effective in the United States for decades in organizing actions including the anti-nuclear movement, the Central America solidarity movement, lesbian/gay liberation movement, Earth First and earth liberation movement, WTO and Washington DC for the IMF and World Bank, and others.
On Friday, September 20th, we are encouraging adults to follow the lead of Bay Area youth from Youth vs Apocalypse and Extinction Rebellion SF Bay Youth who are planning a
march in San Francisco. On September 23rd, 24th, 25th and 27th we have organized nonviolent direct actions at several locations. Details about these actions will be shared at a meeting of affinity group representatives during Spokes Councils in August and September.
On September 26th there will be a meeting of affinity groups to assess what we have done and to clarify and firm up the vision for a larger action on the 27th.
Diablo Rising Tide and the Society of Fearless Grandmothers will continue to conduct NVDA trainings in August and September leading up to the Climate Strike. People may sign up for trainings at
www.climatejusticesf.org.
We sincerely hope that the International Indian Treaty Council members in Northern California join us. Pennie Opal Plant, one of the founding grandmothers of INM SF Bay, will be happy to talk with someone from your organization to answer questions and share more information. The next step for the Richmond Coal Ordinance will be a hearing at the city council, which we expect will occur in October. Our efforts in the interim will be focused on clearing up misunderstandings, solidifying our support in the community, and preparing for the
council
meeting. We will also be looking for ways to find common ground with our perceived adversaries.

On September 20th, youth around the world will lead a climate strike - walking out of their classes and jobs to call for action on the climate crisis.

There are some who are afforded the privilege of complacency, saying that we are faced with a climate crisis in the distant future. However, for countless others, the crisis is now. The climate crisis is confronting us with the fierce urgency of now, and we must respond now. We are being called in this moment to care. Acting during the climate strike shows that you care.
The Climate Strike will precede the U.N. Youth Climate Summit on September 21st and U.N. Climate Action Summit on September 23rd in New York City.

In your congregation you can use the weekend of September 20th to support youth in leading the worship service in your congregation and preaching on climate.

Faith communities, schools, and all of us can be in solidarity with youth climate strikers that week by participating in local climate strikes and demonstration events around the country doing our part to lift up the urgency of the climate crisis and supporting youth leadership. You can also join events your state IPL may be organizing. In my state, Alabama Interfaith Power & Light will be hosting an Ecumenical service with Beloved United Church of Christ and Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham on September 27th in celebration of the climate strike.
