President's Message

Ah, Fall: the weather is quickly changing and the kids/vet students have gone/come back to school. Depending on your geographic location, household arrangement, and professional situation, those could be good things or bad things. Fall also consistently brings pathology conferences to the foreground.

The combined ESVCP/ECVP congress is right around the corner in Arnhem, The Netherlands, and the ACVP/ASVCP meeting will be held in November in San Antonio, Texas, USA. Very different locations but lots of great similarities: colleagues, mystery cases, scientific presentations, bone marrow workshops... please keep reading the NewsBlast and visit the website for more information!

If you cannot make it to one of the annual pathology meetings, we hope you can stay connected by attending Online Rounds, skimming our Instagram , reviewing mystery cases, checking out the quarterly Snapshot Digest, and/or diving deep into some Vet Clin Path articles . Great contributions from dedicated colleagues abound!

2019 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient

Dr. Karen Young

The ASVCP Lifetime Achievement Award, established in 2004, recognizes members of the Society who have contributed to the advancement of the field of veterinary clinical pathology. A call for nominations for the award is put out to ASVCP members annually in the spring and the award is presented to recipients at the Annual Meeting. This year, the award is again given to one Society member who has contributed greatly to the advancement of veterinary clinical pathology, Dr. Karen Young.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Young!
2019 Educator Award Recipient

Dr. Robert Darren Wood

The ASVCP Education Committee is pleased to announce Dr. Robert Darren Wood, from the University of Guelph, as the recipient of the 2019 ASVCP Educator Award.

Dr. Wood’s seventeen years of teaching at the Ontario Veterinary College have included the training and mentoring of veterinary, master's, and PhD students, as well as clinical pathology residents. His instruction has also included teaching pre-DVM students and a summer clinical pathology course to veterinarians from around the world with the goal of increasing their chance for North American licensure. Dr. Wood is noted to have a sincere desire to be an effective educator utilizing a student-centered interactive class environment, seeking out innovative technologies, and taking courses offered by Guelph to further his understanding of pedagogical methods. His efforts have been acknowledged with consistently high teaching evaluations and various teaching awards including the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association Teacher of the Year Award. Dr. Wood is also an educational leader at OVC serving on its curriculum committee for the last eight years.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Darren Wood when he receives the award at the ASVCP Business Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, this November!
2019 Early Career Award Recipient

Dr. Mary Leissinger

The ASVCP Early Career Award was first given in 2017. It honors ASVCP members in the early stages of their careers who show exceptional promise in the discipline of veterinary clinical pathology through efforts in research, diagnostic service, teaching, and/or service to the Society. The award is restricted to individuals in the first six years of their careers after completion of residency training or advanced degree completion.

This year’s award recipient is Dr. Mary Leissinger.
Dr. Leissinger attended veterinary school at Louisiana State University. Following completion of a rotating small animal internship at the University of Tennessee, she returned to LSU for a combined clinical pathology residency and Masters program. She finished her thesis on a neutrophil recruitment method for a murine model of bacterial pneumonia and obtained ACVP diplomate status in 2014, when she joined the faculty at the University of Florida.

At UF, Dr. Leissinger was heavily involved in diagnostics, professional student education, and resident training. She received the University of Florida’s Educator Award and Educational Development Certificate in 2017. She has published numerous case reports, been on grants, and helped prepare the laboratory for AAVLD accreditation. She also served on university-level committees for curricular review, academic advancement, and educational strategic planning. She serves the ASVCP through her involvement on the Education Committee.

Dr. Leissinger now works for IDEXX Bioanalytics.

Please join us in congratulating her on her achievements at the awards ceremony during the ASVCP Business Meeting in San Antonio.

In Memoriam: Ted Valli
Victor Edwin Oswald Valli
December 20, 1931 - August 9, 2019
"Dr. Victor Edwin Oswald Valli, known by most people as Ted Valli, died this past weekend in California. Ted was known, at least in name, by most clinical pathologists across the world and by many anatomic pathologists. Those who knew Ted personally were invariably inspired by his deep passion for veterinary pathology and impressed by his humour and never-ending inquisitiveness. Until a few years ago, Ted could reliably be found sitting in the front row of presentations at the Annual Meeting and to get up and ask at least one question."
-Dr. Dorothee Bienzle, August 15, 2019
2019 ASVCP Education Forum for Discussion
Submitted by Dr. Ashleigh Newman
Please join us at the ASVCP Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, for the Education Forum for Discussion, hosted by the ASVCP Education Committee. The Committee is excited to announce that Dr. Bente Flatland, Associate Professor and Clinical Pathology Laboratory Director of the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, will lead the forum, titled: Practical QA and QC Training for Clinical Pathology Residents.

In this session, Dr. Flatland will first present suggested learning objectives for clinical pathology resident QA/QC training, including methods to teach this material. This will be followed by an audience exchange of ideas and perspectives on the topic. All are welcome to attend including pathologists, residents, medical technologists, veterinary technicians, lab managers, and veterinary students. We hope we have a diverse audience in attendance to contribute to a lively discussion!

ACVIM 2019 Forum Highlights
Submitted by Laura Snyder
The 2019 ASVCP specialty sessions at the ACVIM Forum in Phoenix, Arizona, were presented by Drs. Pete Christopherson, Melinda Camus, Brett Stone, and Randolph Baral. The Society’s participation in the ACVIM Forum is an excellent opportunity for networking with our colleagues in internal medicine and to showcase the remarkable work being done in our specialty.

Pete Christopherson (Auburn University) gave two outstanding talks on disorders of coagulation. In his first session, he focused on the clinicopathologic findings and molecular basis for canine inherited bleeding disorders. In his second session, he spoke on congenital macrothrombocytopenias, focusing particularly on genetic testing and the expanding list of breeds in which this condition has been identified.

With her extensive experience on the QALS Committee, Melinda Camus (University of Georgia) presented a critically informative session on quality assurance/quality control for point-of-care instruments. Brett Stone (QML Vetnostics) presented an outstanding lecture on disease prevalence, focusing particularly on the often overlooked concepts of positive and negative predictive values.

Randolph Baral (Paddington Cat Hospital) gave two excellent talks on biological variation. His first talk focused on maximizing interpretation of clinical pathology findings. His second talk highlighted the work of the website   vetbiologicalvariation.org . This website, which houses a multi-species database and study guidelines, has been established by a cross-disciplinary committee of veterinary clinical pathologists, internists, and epidemiologists.

These presentations are an excellent opportunity for ASVCP members to showcase the new and exciting work they are doing. If you are interested in participating next year, please contact Erica Behling-Kelly, the organizer for the 2020 ACVIM Specialty Session in Baltimore, Maryland!
