Happy September!
I hope everyone had an excellent summer, I finished mine with a staycation with the family and a camping trip with great friends in the badlands of Alberta! I'm looking forward to the beginning of my favourite season, the signs of Fall are starting to show themselves!
If you missed any of our Native Prairie Speaker Series last month, the recordings are available on our YouTube Channel. We had Jeff Lane from the University of Saskatchewan discuss bats at the SODCAP AGM and Brett Campbell from the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring institute discuss mammal monitoring in Alberta.
We have a great webinar coming up on September 17th about Swift Fox recovery in Montana by Heather Harris (Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks). You can register here.
There are also quite a few events in September in SK and the prairies, make sure to check out the events section of the newsletter!
There's also more information about the joint NPRR and TGP workshops below. Make sure to check out the Call for Presentation Abstracts as the deadline is September 30th!
Finally, we would like to thank the generous support from our sponsors: Crescent Point Energy, SaskPower, SaskEnergy, SaskTel, SaskWater, Mosaic, Enbridge, EcoFriendly Sask, Wildlife Habitat Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada, as well as the continuous support of all the PCAP's
Partners
.
Please feel free to contact us at any time!
Have a great month!

The Saskatchewan Environmental Society -
helping people live sustainable lives
Submitted by Joe Schmutz, SES volunteer
The Saskatchewan Environmental Society (SES) was incorporated in 1970. One of our early issues was when people in Saskatchewan called for an alternative to a hydroelectric dam on the Churchill River. Supported by SES's call for energy conservation instead of costly megaprojects, Saskatchewan instituted a Model House program whereby threats to ecosystems and human health from dams and mercury could be avoided. Since then, SES has been a leader in energy policy in Saskatchewan and a contributor to Canadian environmental law development and changes. In addition to policy, SES has lead programs whereby people could reduce their energy and water footprint and continues to provide such education in Saskatchewan schools and via our
Destination Conservation Saskatchewan program in collaboration with SaskPower. Our
Saskatchewan Living Green Expo helps people discover sustainable consumer products & services from green businesses in the areas of home-building, transportation, food & beverage, renewable energy, camping & outdoors, and much more.
In 2016, SES created a business arm based on scientific evidence that climate change is one of several major challenges we face in Canada and the world. The resulting
SES Solar Co-operative Ltd. now has six solar installations that harness Saskatchewan's rich solar resource of 2267 hrs of sunshine annually. In an extension of the SES Solar Co-operative, SES's
Renewable Rides program has added 5 electric vehicles to the Saskatoon CarShare Co-operative in collaboration with Saskatoon Light & Power. These vehicles are 100% solar powered.
SES is also actively involved in advancing ecosystem sustainability. Enhancing forest sustainability and fostering livelihoods in northern Saskatchewan, SES has assisted a forestry company in restructuring their operations whereby they were awarded the coveted and economically attractive Forest Stewardship Council label.
For the past 3 years, SES has been working to protect the Saskatoon Northeast Swale - a connected landscape of 2800 ha representing one of the largest surviving fragments of natural prairie in the heavily altered moist-mixed grassland ecoregion. The Swale is an ecologically diverse network of rare native prairie, riparian areas and wetlands that is home to more than 200 plant species and more than 100 bird species, as well as mammals, amphibians, reptiles and insects. Some of the rare, endangered or culturally significant species include Sharp-tailed Grouse, Northern Leopard Frog, American Badger, Crowfoot Violet and Western Red Lily. There are many threats to the Swale including new and future planned highways bisecting the Swale, increased urban encroachment, invasive species, increased lighting and lack of dark-sky compliance e.g.

SES is also very concerned about the impacts of climate change on Saskatchewan native prairie and how we can work to reduce greenhouse gas impacts on these ecosystems and adapt to the new future facing our province, which includes increased fire, flooding, insect predation, and continuing declines in biodiversity.

2019 Saskatchewan Pasture Tour Update from the Planning Committee
The Saskatchewan Pasture Tour near Hanley on August 8th was a busy day of learning how to ID plants on native prairie, managing cattle on rangeland, learning about pipelines and solar watering systems, and establishing tame and native species among other topics. The annual Saskatchewan Pasture Tour is a joint planning effort of Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association, Ducks Unlimited Canada, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, South Saskatchewan Watershed Stewards and the Saskatchewan Forage Council. Thanks to the producers who welcomed the tour to their farms and ranches and discussed the management of their cattle and grasslands. Look for the next pasture tour, being planned for early August 2020!
