Priestly Ponderings for September

"Round,
Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending nor beginning
On an ever-spinning reel..."

These lyrics from 'Windmills of Your Mind' still stick fifty years later, though the rest of the lyrics don't.   To me, they evoke rhythms of life with its cycles of life and death, greeting new people and saying goodbye, reflecting again on things considered in the past.

We are in Ordinary Time in the Liturgical Calendar, but that is a time when extra-ordinary things can happen, if we pay attention.  While most of us at Trinity are not directly influenced by the school calendar, it is still with us in shifting gears, even when the weather is not changing gears according to our pre-conceived ideas of what seasons ought to be.

As we reflect on the cycles in our lives and those in the church, I hope we can continue to listen and pay attention to the work of the Spirit - "Who am I called to be?   How am I called to be?   Whose am I called to be?"   Sometimes we catch a glimpse of that in the simple and ordinary and can allow ourselves to be transformed.

Regardless of what has brought you to Trinity as a worshipping community, I invite you to reflect on what keeps you here.   What nurtures your life in Christ here at the church?   How can you express that with those who are at Trinity - or how can you share that experience with others?   Beyond that, how can you express that to friends and family who don't come to church?

It is a simple reflection, one that crops up on a regular basis as we ponder the meaning of life, the universe, and everything, but it is a reflection that can lead to action on our part.  As you consider your life in God, what are you willing to share with others that will allow them to have similar experiences?

Pax et Bonum,
Paul +
