"Please join us at a City Employees Retirement Party"

This past week I had the opportunity to attend the retirement party for Cliff Peterson, who has worked for Orem City for over 33 years. I met his beautiful wife, wonderful daughter, and fun grandchildren at his party.

As I attended, I thought about all of the good efforts and work Cliff has put into his position in the city. He has spent the majority of his working life in efforts for the city and its residents.

I believe that the employees of the City of Orem are one of our most important assets.

I was sorry to learn this week that one of our valued and longtime Fire Fighters, Kevin Wilkey, is leaving our city to take employment elsewhere. He has been a leader in the Fire Department and has done an outstanding job in protecting the citizens of Orem and in helping to meet their medical emergencies.

I value all of our employees and those who serve are city in all of the many departments of the city. Without their efforts and work, our city would not run. Because of their employment, our citizens feel safe and protected, our roads are in good condition, our water turns on at night, our storm water runs off where it is supposed to, and our medical emergencies are handled with skill and expertise.

I wish to thank all those who work in our behalf. I am happy to pay my fair share of taxes to fund the efforts of so many who serve and help us in many different ways.

I believe that we have a beautiful place to live and that we should be thankful for all of the great assets the city workers help to provide and keep functioning for us.

May we all value the efforts of these fine men and women.

I often receive compliments from citizens in behalf of a city employee who worked well with a new business coming into town, a policeman who helped a small child in need, or a utility worker who went out of their way to help a homeowner. This is a often and not a rare event where compliments are given for our employees.

So I just want to pass on to our city employees how much I appreciate and value their efforts in working with all of our citizens to make Orem a great place to live.

Councilmember Dave Spencer

Our quest to improve on all of our great recreational amenities in the city marches on as we add new programs, new features, and new fixes to our parks. We are truly living in the golden age of recreation here in the City of Orem.

Although the new Orem Family Fitness Center is under construction, that doesn’t mean that you have to put your fitness on hold! The Orem Senior Friendship Center is equipped with exercise equipment and fitness classes to meet your every need. We are also proud to announce that the metal, cement, and bricks from the demolished Fitness Center will be recycled into other projects in the community.

There are a wide variety of classes and programs available for citizens of all ages – flag football, tennis lessons, ultimate frisbee, swimming, and much more. Go to oremrecreation.com to see the full list of possibilities and to sign up.

Several big park projects are currently underway or will start soon.

New tennis court and pickleball courts being built at Bonneville Park. Pickleball has taken Orem residents by storm and we’re responding to the demand with more courts.

Windsor Park just got a brand new playground.

We partnered with Real Salt Lake to build new futsal courts in Geneva Park.

The All-Together Playground will be receiving some TLC later this month as Surface America returns to fix some problems with the playground’s soft-fall surfacing.

Orem is nationally recognized for all of its great recreational amenities but we’re not done yet. We’re going to keep building up Orem until it's the best City in the nation.

Self-Defense Classes

The Orem Police Department is now offering self-defense classes for both women and men. Classes are held every Thursday night starting Aug. 22 for 8 weeks.

Women go from 6:30 to 8 pm and then the men follow from 8 to 9:30 pm. All classes will be in the Orem Public Safety Building (95 E Center).

Registration is $45 and can be done online at psclass.orem.org .

The Business Resource Center

Are you an Orem business owner and need help with skills to manage your business? The Business Resource Center (BRC) in Orem offers free classes and mentoring to help you! Meals on Wheels Needs Your Help!

Meals on Wheels needs your help! Volunteers are needed to deliver a meal and a smile to homebound senior citizens in your community for one hour a week. Weekly and substitute positions are available.

Save the Bees!

Did you know that bees are very important to your garden? They are pollinators & keep flowers & fruits blooming.

It is estimated that one-third of the food that we consume daily relies on pollination mainly by bees.

Plants you can put in your yard specifically for bees:

Bee Balm
Lilac Bushes
Cone Flowers
Poppies
Sunflowers

Have you ever heard of a bee bath? You can easily make one (or buy one online ;))

Basically it is a shallow dish which you put pebbles or marbles into for the bees to rest on & fill with water so they can rest & rehydrate.

Going on a trip? Do you need a passport?

Orem City is a passport acceptance agency. Passport applications are processed Monday-Thursday 8:00 to 4:30. Here's a list of things you will need when you apply for a passport

First time passports or Renewal of a lost passport :

Original or certified copy of birth certificate
Current picture ID (such as a driver's license)
A check or money order for the federal fee (NO cash or card payments)
A completed application-we have them here or you can download and print from travel.state.gov
A passport photograph-available at Costco, Allen's Camera, Walgreens and we do take them here as well, the cost is just a little higher.
Children under 16 must be present with both parents.

If you are renewing a passport as an adult you may be able to renew on your own by mail. We have applications here or you can get one at travel.state.gov . We would be happy to look over your renewal application to check for completeness before you send it off if you would like to bring it in. Have more questions? The Fitness Center has officially (temporarily) moved to the Senior Friendship Center! Construction has already begun on the new Fitness Center and it will be ready before you know it! Come down to the Senior Friendship Center for all of your fitness needs! Check out the schedules below to find out what classes are happening!

Water Conservation Tips and Resources

Living in the seconddriest state in the country necessitates a certain amount of personal responsibility when it comes to water conservation. Below are a few statistics from the EPA to help put the seriousness of the situation into perspective.

Outdoor water use accounts for more than 30 percent of total household water use, on average, but can be as much as 60 percent of total household water use in arid regions.
If the average sized lawn in the United States is watered for 20 minutes every day for 7 days, it’s like running the shower constantly for 4 days or taking more than 800 showers. That's equivalent to the amount of water needed for the average family to take 1 years’ worth of showers.
As much as 50 percent of the water we use outdoors is lost due to wind, evaporation, and runoff caused by inefficient irrigation methods and systems. A household with an automatic landscape irrigation system that isn't properly maintained and operated can waste up to 25,000 gallons of water annually.
When hiring a professional to install or audit your landscape irrigation system, be sure he or she is certified by a WaterSense labeled irrigation program. If the system is well managed, a household's irrigation water use can be reduced by 15 percent, or nearly 7,600 gallons of water, annually. That's the amount of water needed to take 480 showers.
