MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR

Dear Friends,

September seems like a transitional month to me. It marks the end of the often hot, steamy days we suffer through in June through August and the beginning of what are typically some absolutely beautiful days of cooler temperatures and early fall colors. That's not to say that Mother Nature won't remind us of who is actually in charge when we worry about a tropical storm or even a hurricane bearing down on us! Regardless of the fact that we can't control the weather, those of us at the Home see so many other things that remind us of how important our work in support of elders in need is here in DC. Our ability to offer high quality care to the city's low and modest income seniors sets us apart from many facilities where only those who can afford to pay top dollar are able to live.

Each year, the National Center for Assisted Living sets aside one week in September to celebrate the individuals served in assisted living. There are over 28,000 assisted living residences across the US that more than 1 million people call home so it is no surprise that such a celebration is observed annually. This year's theme is "A Spark of Creativity," in hopes of encouraging everyone to get their creative juices flowing, whether it's residents trying out new things or caregivers exploring new ways to improve care and community life. I take great pleasure in watching the residents participate in all the wonderful programs and activities offered here at the Home and also in knowing that we consistently maintain a reputation for excellence in our assisted living facility annual surveys. None of this would be possible without caregivers whose patience, kindness, respect and compassion exemplify the best of humanity's qualities. We have much to be proud of in fulfilling our mission of service.

Sue

THE LAST BLAST OF SUMMER ACTIVITIES!

As the summer season winds down, a lot of special activities have been going on here at the Home. We held our first annual crab fest in August, which was a great hit with all the residents. One of our resident's son's A Capella group, the Emerald Gospel Singers, performed on August 24th; they were terrific and their gift of music was much appreciated. The Activities Department also started 3 new programs in August: a fancy "high tea" party on the first of every month, a weekly crochet class, and a new knitting club group. It's always gratifying to see the residents engage in social and recreational events as they are so important to their emotional and mental wellbeing. Feel free to stop by and join with us in all the wonderful activities that go on here at the Home on a daily basis!
